Marla spreads the ruined intercom’s wires across the lobby floor and compares them with the handset’s exposed circuit. Stella kneels beside her, listening for the faintest returning pattern.

Marla Voss

The source is not here. These lines run beneath the building, toward the eastern service corridor.

Yama shifts the cabinet tighter against the steel door, then looks toward the dark stairwell. Beyond the barricade, scattered footsteps scrape away from the silent lobby.

Then we trace it before the dead gather again. The civilians stay here, behind the door.

Marla lifts a coil of severed cable and leads toward the basement stairs. Stella follows with the handset, while Yama takes the rear and True Dave brings up the middle.

True Dave puts weight on his injured ankle descending the first steps, and a sharp throb travels up his leg. Below, a buried relay clicks once in the darkness.

There! It answered the handset. The control source is still powered somewhere underneath us.

The basement corridor opens ahead, lined with utility doors and fresh cable. From somewhere beyond them, a distant speaker begins testing a single measured tone.

True Dave follows the fresh cables through the basement, matching their turns to the measured tone. Weight on his injured ankle sends a sharp throb upward, but he keeps moving.

The endless survival chore drags at his attention, making each junction feel like another unwanted task. He forces himself to inspect every branch instead of accepting the first plausible route.

Force sensitivity reaches through the walls and separates the speaker’s vibration from the building’s ordinary hum. The signal comes from a locked utility room at the corridor’s end.

True Dave raises the combined light saber and uses its golden blade as a precise guide, tracing the cable’s final run without severing it. The route ends at a powered control box beside the speaker.

That is it! The tone comes from behind this door. We found the control source.

Yama

Good. We know where the orders begin. We finish the work, then the living can remain safe above.

The testing tone repeats from behind the utility door, steady and mechanical. Fresh cables enter beneath it, confirming the source’s exact location.

“I separate my lightsabers into two and cut through the door.”

True Dave separates the joined hilts into two light sabers. The endless survival chore drags at his timing, but Force sensitivity steadies his wrists and keeps the blades aligned.

He cuts through the locked utility door in a clean crossing stroke. The metal parts inward, revealing the powered control box and its measured tone inside.

The severed door slab drops against his shoulder and drives him back a step, leaving a hot bruise beneath his clothing. He keeps both sabers raised.

The room is open! The control source is right there.

Then end the signal. The living above can stay safe.

Inside, the control box pulses beside its small tone unit. The measured signal stops as True Dave brings both golden blades down through the box, disabling the source completely.

Silence settles through the basement. Above them, no new rhythm answers from the building, and the evacuation route remains free of the horde’s organized pull.

“I electrocute the signal generator with force lightning”

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +3)

The Signal Beneath the Lobby

The disabled control box still holds a sealed signal generator beneath its casing. True Dave reaches through the broken console with the Force and pulls the generator free into the air.

His survival instinct turns the task into another frustrating chore, dragging at his focus. Force sensitivity cuts through that resistance, locating every conductive path inside the suspended device.

True Dave raises one light saber beside the generator. Its golden blade provides a precise grounding edge as white-blue lightning snaps from his hand through the circuitry.

The generator convulses in the Force, then goes completely dead. Its stored charge discharges harmlessly into the saber’s blade, leaving the control system permanently unable to broadcast.

It is silent everywhere! The dead will not be directed here again.

Yama

Then the evacuation course is secure. The living above can leave without another signal calling the horde.

A final indicator dies on the ruined console, revealing a maintenance release beneath it. The service corridor door unlocks, opening a clear route from the basement to the eastern road.

The last sparks faded. Beyond the opened service door, the eastern route lay quiet beneath the gray morning.

The signal is dead. Really dead this time.

Then the living move east. No more hidden hands pulling the dead behind them.

Good. Let the road belong to us again.

Above, the defenders began consolidating the evacuation, counting the rescued and the cost. True Dave rested his bruised shoulder and aching ankle against the wall, watching daylight gather beyond the corridor.

The hidden signal system was broken, its circuitry dead beneath the building, and the eastern service route stood open at last. The horde no longer moved with one purpose, giving the survivors a narrow but genuine road to safety. Stella, Yama, and True Dave left the ruined machinery behind as the evacuation carried the living toward the east.
