Avalok trudges through the deep mire, each dragging step loosening bubbles of corpse-cold air. Ahead, ancient witch ruins rise from the reeds beneath a bruised evening sky.
A fourteen-year-old girl, slight and pale-faced with a split lower lip, with mud-streaked brown hair and a torn green dress struggles among four rough-coated bandits. One grips her arm while the others bind her wrists with cord.

Mara
Help me! Please, someone help me!
Her scream threads through the reeds. Beneath Avalok’s boots, the swamp answers with a slow pulse, a deep returning throb that seems to follow the evil she came to banish.

The Bandits
Quiet, girl. No one comes this far into the mire.
The bandits glance toward the ruins, suddenly less certain. Black water shivers around their boots though the reeds stand still, and something knocks once from beneath the mud.

Mara
There! Someone is there! Please, I know you can hear me!
The four turn toward Avalok. Their lantern throws thin, shaking light across his decayed armor and the blackened kingdom crest, while the pulse sounds again below.

Avalok
The mire is answering her fear.

Free the trapped girl from the bandits
“I slowly walk into the light allowing them to see my undead visage.i look to each of them trying to intimidate them as i grip my sword”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled -1)

Avalok walks slowly into the lantern glow. His ruined face emerges piece by piece, one empty socket and one sorrowful blue eye fixed on the bandits as his fingers close around the long sword.
Dried blackened blood clings to the blade. Its wolf-head pommel presses into his palm while old memories of steel, darkness, and rising from death drag at his resolve, the haunting nearly turning his gaze aside.
Resilience holds him upright. He looks to each bandit in turn, letting the dead silence around his corpse become part of the threat, until the lantern shakes in its holder.

The Bandits
Back. Back, damn you!
The bandits release the trapped girl. She stumbles free as their formation breaks, leaving the cord hanging loose from her wrists. None of them dares step toward Avalok.

Mara
Mara. My name is Mara. Please, do not let them take me again.
The effort leaves Avalok's will hollow and wavering; for one noticed moment, his sword hand slackens. The bandits see it, but fear has already carried them backward into the reeds.

“*I cut the ropes from her wrists giving her a good view of my face as i begin to speak* Are you not fearful of my appearance as they? Does what stand before you make you feel safe….i imagine not. You have your life young one I’d suggest you be more careful with it in the future.”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled -1)

Avalok brings the old long sword down in a controlled stroke. The wolf-head pommel anchors his grip as dried blackened blood flakes from the blade, and the cord parts cleanly.
The loosened ropes fall into the mud. Mara rubs her wrists and looks up into Avalok’s ruined face, close enough to see the empty socket and the sorrowful blue eye.

Avalok
Are you not fearful of my appearance as they are? Does what stands before you make you feel safe? I imagine not. You have your life, young one. Be more careful with it in the future.
The words leave Avalok’s resolve thinner than before. Haunted memories pull his gaze toward the black water, but Resilient will holds him steady beneath the shaking lantern light.

Mara
I am afraid of you. But you cut me free when they would not. That matters more than your face.
Behind her, the bandits retreat through the reeds without speaking. One lantern dips, then rises again, while the mire’s pulse answers from beneath the ruins.
“Pragmatic such pragmatism is rare these days…where are you from girl ?”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Psychology, rolled +2)

Avalok
Pragmatic such pragmatism is rare these days. Where are you from, girl?
Mara studies the corpse before answering. Avalok’s haunted memories twist the simple question toward old interrogations, but Resilient will steadies his voice and keeps the moment gentle.

Mara
The village of Bellwether, beyond the western fen. My aunt lives there. I came to these ruins because the old women said something wicked was waking beneath them.
She glances toward the ruins, rubbing the red marks around her wrists. The swamp pulse answers beneath the mud, slower now, but unmistakably alive.

Mara
I thought I could stop it before it reached Bellwether. I was wrong. The bandits found me first.
Her explanation settles the question, yet leaves the ruins more present than before. Somewhere under their broken stones, a faint knocking begins again.
✓ Quest Accepted
Bring Mara safely to Bellwether
Avalok leaves deep mire before the ancient witch ruins behind and arrives at the village of Bellwether.
“This is no place for you girl only the dead and forsaken wander here if you would have me I would see you back to your village. No sense adding another ghost to these swamps.”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

Bellwether crouches beyond the western fen, its muddy lanes crowded with leaning cottages and shuttered windows. A sour wind carries peat smoke, wet straw, and the faint toll of a bell.

Avalok
This is no place for you, girl. Only the dead and forsaken wander those swamps. If you would have me, I will see you safely back to your village. No sense adding another ghost to them.
Mara reaches Bellwether’s first houses beside him. Several villagers freeze in their doorways, staring at Avalok’s ruined armor, while Mara steps forward and raises one hand.

Mara
He brought me back. The bandits are gone, and he did not harm me.

Bellwether Villagers
Mara! Gods preserve us. Get inside, child.
The villagers gather around Mara without touching her. Above them, the bell tolls again from the abandoned chapel, though its rope hangs motionless and black water seeps beneath the chapel door.

Mara
That is the sound I heard beneath the ruins. It began three nights ago, and every time it rings, someone in Bellwether dreams of the dead.
