Four days after the ward settles, Kahul stands on the castle roof, smoke crawling over the island like a second sky. Below, the stone forts of the Serioli ring the central stronghold, while rival tribes hammer at each other across the pebble flats.

The serpent shamans swing their staffs and hurl crackling spirit bombs into the mêlée. Each burst scatters fighters, jolting the battlefield closer to the castle walls.

Kahul’s axe answers with a deep blue pulse. The light runs through his armor, down into the ward beneath the mountain, and the whole stronghold shivers as if it hears a command.

Grandfather

The prison feels it. Every blow below shakes Magalin’s chain.

Serev

This is the cost of binding. If the ward falters, all the island feels the break.

Kahul drives the axe haft to the roof stones and the blue glow spreads, a visible seal answering the chaos outside. The central ward holds, even as war burns around it.

Uncle Tux

Then the choice is plain. Hold the ward, or lose everything beneath it.

Kahul closes his grip and draws inward, feeding calm through pain and breath into the axe. The blue runes on his armor brighten once, then settle into a steadier glow.

The ward under the roof answers at once. The stone stops trembling, and the seal’s light firms into a clean, unbroken line beneath his feet.

A thin thread of blood marks Kahul’s muzzle, then stills. The nosebleed stains the roof stone, dark against the blue wash.

Grandfather

Grandfather

Good. That is the right shape of strength.

The chamber below hears you. It settles when you settle.

Outside, a fresh удар of fighting rocks the cliff-face, but the ward holds cleanly. Blue light holds the roof seam shut while smoke rolls over the island.

Uncle Tux

Uncle Tux

Then we keep it this way, or the whole stronghold cracks under us.

Kahul snaps his focus toward the battlefield below and releases the spell in a tight burst. Three blue missiles streak out over the parapet, finding the giant lizard shaman amid smoke and shattered rock.

The impacts strike home and throw her backward, breaking her casting stance. Her staff flies half a span from her hand, and the nearby fighters flinch as the ward-light on the roof pulses once in answer.

But the force of the cast rips at Kahul's breath, and the old nosebleed opens again. A fresh line of blood runs down his muzzle and dots the blue sheen on his armor.

Grandfather

Grandfather

Good. Keep them off the stones.

Serev

Serev

The seal feels that strike. It holds, but it notices every surge.

Below, the shaman pushes up on one elbow, dazed but not finished, while the smoke thickens around her. The ward stays steady, yet the clash below is still moving, and more enemies are turning toward the roof.

Uncle Tux

Uncle Tux

Kahul, the next one is looking up. Do you drop them now, or do we hold the roof?

I fire the parpharet, a harpoon slinger like a huge crossbow on wheels at the shaman

Kahul hauls the parpharet on its wheels to the parapet and sights through the smoke. The shaman is still half-risen below, but the angle is wrong, the roof stones jolt, and the shot skews wide.

The harpoon slams into shattered rock short of the target, snapping the sling line taut with a deafening crack. Stone chips burst upward, and the weapon bucks hard against Kahul's grip.

Kahul

Kahul

The setup is off. Too much smoke, too little time.

The misfire drags the parpharet sideways, and its wheel catches in a seam of uneven roof stone. The weapon jams at the parapet, no longer easy to swing back on the same target.

Below, the giant lizard shaman scrambles behind a broken slab instead of standing open. Around her, fighters duck from the falling chips and look up at Kahul's roofline.

Grandfather

Grandfather

Hold your footing, Kahul. Do not waste the next breath.

Serev

Serev

The ward stays steady, but the roof gives less grace now.

Uncle Tux

Uncle Tux

It missed. Now they know where the threat sits.

I reload and catch my beath

Kahul resets the sling, threads the line back into place, and drags one slow breath through his nose. The jammed frame creaks, but his hands steady.

He wipes dust from the grip, then braces the parpharet against the parapet with a shorter, firmer stance. The blue ward in the stones keeps humming underfoot.

Kahul

Kahul

The sling is intact. The smoke is thinning.

Grandfather lowers his warning hand and watches Kahul’s footing instead of the battlefield. Serev’s glow softens, matching the roof’s steadier pulse.

Grandfather

Grandfather

Good. Breathe once, then choose your target.

Uncle Tux

Uncle Tux

That thing answers better when you stop fighting the strain.

Below the parapet, the broken stone still holds the missed harpoon, while the shaman remains hidden behind her slab. Kahul has the weapon ready again, and the roof falls briefly quiet around him.

Kahul waits for the slab to shift, then snaps the parpharet up the instant the shaman shows herself.

The shot lands hard and throws her backward behind the stone. Blue light flares across the roof, and the old ward gives a low answering hum.

A shard of recoil bites into Kahul’s shoulder. The sling line jerks loose, and fresh heat runs from his nose onto the seal-stone by his feet.

Grandfather

Grandfather

Hit again, if she rises. Do not let her find her breath.

Uncle Tux

Uncle Tux

She’s broken cover. Now press her.

Below the parapet, the shaman’s slab skids aside from the impact, and two more fighters rush into view from the smoke, staring up at Kahul’s roofline.

Serev

Serev

The ward holds, but the roof is drawing eyes now.
