Dawn silvering the Emerald Clan Village, Nadia and Maelin pass through the open gate onto the forest road. Maelin’s messenger bag holds both sealed packets: originals for LionsMain, copies and warnings for Namasei.
The elders and defenders remain behind to guard the village and preserve the council’s work. Maelin travels without her Imperial clasp, its place taken by a fresh Emerald clasp at her shoulder.
Beyond the gate, the road descends beneath ancient trees. Maelin is a lean young adult woman with weather-browned skin, dark braided hair, and a practical green-trimmed traveling dress beneath her envoy’s cord.

You have carried this road alone for years, Nadia. May I ask about the history behind your silence, or would that trespass too far?
She keeps her pace beside Nadia, leaving space between them as the village walls disappear behind trunks and morning mist. Her question holds no demand, only careful regard.

I mean the Amethyst Clan, and Ferric Yullener most of all. He was my boss in the cruelest sense, but I will hear only what you choose to tell me.
