Adventure of Artok Rune 1

Artok gathers his gear and cracks his neck beneath the black bandanna. Sera and Katie watch him, ready at either side as the narrowed gallery opens into an abandoned hoist chamber.

Rusted chains vanish into a vertical shaft where darkness swallows their lower ends. The mine groans overhead, shedding grit across a blackened control stone carved with matching grooves.

The rune-stamped anvil grows cold against its chain. A thin line of pale ash slips from its face and creeps across the floor toward the control stone.

Artok takes water from Sera, washes the torn palm, then draws a bandage from his thigh bag and wraps the hand lightly before reclaiming the chain.

The pale ash reaches the stone and gathers in its grooves. Far beneath the chamber, something shifts against the chains, while the mine gives another long, warning groan.

Artok plants his boots, turns his shoulder against the chain, and hauls. The anvil grinds away from the ash, its cold face leaving the control stone’s grooves dark and empty.

The chain rasps over stone as he drags the anvil across the hoist chamber. The pale ash loses its path, scattering into harmless gray flecks before it can reach the shaft.

Artok sets the anvil beyond the shaft’s reach beside a fallen iron brace. He loops its chain twice around the brace and cinches the links until the weight holds fast.

The control stone gives one fading pulse, then falls silent. Below, the unseen chains stop shifting, and the mine settles into its ordinary groaning darkness.

Sera keeps watch over the shaft while Katie studies the dead grooves. The anvil remains secured behind them, its runes cold and its stolen power beyond the chamber’s reach.
