The forge lies hot and empty around Artok, its coals breathing red. The doors slam wide as Sera, a young woman adventurer with a cropped dark braid and travel leathers, lean and brown-skinned, with an angular face and dark fitted leathers, rushes in beside Katie, a young woman adventurer with copper hair, a green cloak, and a scar across one eyebrow, sturdy and fair-skinned, with a russet tunic beneath her cloak.

Sera

Sera

We found it, Da. The anvil is with the warlord's raiders, and they are using it to arm their next sortie.

Katie

Katie

The runes are worse than that. They have worked them into a rite to call a demon through, not drive one away. The raiders mean to loose it on the valley.

The stones beneath the forge shudder. Across the empty anvil stand, a fresh rune burns into being, black fire edging its pale lines and pointing like a mark on an unseen road.

Sera

Sera

That is their trail. Your anvil is still answering you, but the sign is fading.

Katie

Katie

We have hours, perhaps less. Once the final rune is set, whatever waits beyond the veil will have a road into our homes.

The new rune pulses once, and the forge falls silent except for the hiss of cooling iron. Sera and Katie stand ready at the threshold, leaving the next choice to Artok.

Recover the rune-stamped anvil

I look at my daughter Sera and her friend. Both have only been adventurers for a short time, but have proven themselves already. I grab my gear and crack my neck

Artok gathers his weapons and travel gear, then cracks his neck beneath the black bandanna. Sera and Katie watch from the threshold as he steps toward the pulsing rune.

Artok Rune

Artok Rune

Take me there. We’ll get my anvil back and stop whatever schemes those bastards are planning.

Sera

Sera

Then stay close, Da. The trail cuts east through the thorn gullies.

They leave the forge and follow the rune’s faint pull into the hills. Dust, thorn, and loose shale turn the old raider path into a shifting maze beneath the evening wind.

Katie

Katie

There, the black mark. No, wait. It points below us now.

Artok leads them down a steep cut, but the shale gives way. They scramble clear as the slope collapses behind them, burying the path and scattering the rune’s fading glow across three blind ravines.

Sera

Sera

We cannot retrace that route. The sign is under the stone, and the raiders’ trail is gone. We need another way to find what lies beneath this hill.

The way to the raiders is lost, but the buried pulse remains, thudding faintly through the rock beneath their boots. The hunt has become a search for an entrance, not a march along a trail.

The three ravines offer no clear trail. Artok’s search finds only fractured shale, thorn roots, and the buried pulse traveling strangely through the hill.

Katie

Katie

The stone is carrying the anvil’s answer sideways. The raiders did not enter from above.

Katie kneels beside a split shelf of rock, green cloak brushing the dust. She traces the faintly warm seam without touching its pale, shifting light.

Sera

Sera

There. That hollow breath. It comes from under the western wall.

Sera points across the ravine. A narrow crack exhales cold air carrying ash and the metallic tang of newly worked steel. The pulse answers from below.

Katie

Katie

A vent, perhaps an old mine shaft. If the rite is below, that may be our way in, but the direct descent is sealed.

The collapsed slope has made the old path useless, but the western fissure gives them a different route. Beyond it, loose stones form a steep crawl toward the hidden hollow.

SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled +1)

Artok wedges through the western fissure, shoulders scraping stone as Sera and Katie follow close behind. The crack narrows, then drops into a steep throat of shale.

Artok Rune

Artok Rune

The air is colder below, and it carries fresh steel.

His boot slips on loose shale. Artok catches himself against the wall, tearing his left palm across a sharp shelf, but keeps his grip and descent.

Sera

Sera

Easy, Da. The stone wants to throw us back.

He reaches the bottom and pulls himself through a curtain of roots into an old mine passage. Dust settles behind them while a dim rune-glow pulses ahead.

Katie

Katie

We are beneath the hill now. Hear that? Hammers, and voices beyond the bend.

I get some water from Sera and wash my cut palm, then pull out a bandage wrap from my thigh bag and lightly wrap my hand before continuing on

Artok takes water from Sera, rinses the torn palm, and binds it lightly with a strip drawn from his thigh bag. The sting fades beneath clean pressure.

You girls know the way, so show me where it is.

Sera

Sera

This way, Da. The vent opens behind that fallen brace.

Sera leads along the mine wall, while Katie studies the pulse in the stone. Together they find a low side passage hidden behind rotten timbers and ash.

Katie

Katie

The raiders are below us, not beyond the bend. Their forge chamber lies through here, and this old gallery gives us a covered approach.

Katie shifts a slab aside, revealing torchlight, hammer-rhythm, and the black-edged glow of Artok’s rune-stamped anvil. A narrow overlook places them above the chamber unseen.

Sera

Sera

There they are. We can see the anvil, count the raiders, and choose our strike before they know we came.

Artok studies the chamber from the overlook. Five raiders work around the glowing anvil: two hammer, one feeds the coals, one watches the tunnel, and a hooded ritualist guards the rune-marked face.

Artok Rune

Artok Rune

The tunnel guard must fall first. Then the anvil can be dragged clear before the rite reaches its final inscription.

He maps the chamber in silence: a chain hangs beside the anvil, the side gallery opens behind the coals, and stacked billets can block the raiders’ retreat. The plan is sound, but studying costs precious time; the rune’s black edge has spread farther across the steel.

Sera

Sera

The watcher faces us only when the hammers pause. We can cross during the next full strike.

Katie

Katie

And the hooded one keeps touching the anvil. I cannot tell whether that is part of the rite or a safeguard.

Artok fixes the sequence: Sera takes the tunnel guard, Katie disrupts the coals, and he reaches the chain and pulls the anvil toward the gallery. The moment arrives with the next hammer-blow.

“I study the raiders and plan to seize my anvil”

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +1)

The Anvil's Dark Trail

Artok studies the chamber until each raider’s movement falls into a pattern. The hammerers expose their backs on every full strike, while the watcher’s gaze follows the tunnel mouth, not the gallery.

Artok Rune

Artok Rune

The chain is within reach of the gallery. Once the coals scatter, the anvil can be pulled clear.

He finds the safest sequence: Sera crosses first during the hammer-blow and drops the watcher, Katie strikes the coal basket aside, and Artok takes the chain immediately.

Sera

Sera

I can reach him before he turns. Give me the next strike.

Katie

Katie

Then I will choke the fire. Without the coals, their rite loses its heat and light.

The next hammer rises. Artok has the chamber mapped, the retreat blocked by billets, and the anvil’s chain fixed as his first grip. No raider watches the gallery.

Director's note

I nod to them, letting them take their actions before I pull the chain

Artok checks his gear, then looks to Sera and Katie across the overlook. His daughter and her friend have faced danger before, but little time has passed since they first took the road.

He cracks his neck and settles his weight for the strike. Below, the raiders raise their hammers together, the impact swallowing every smaller sound.

Sera slips from the gallery during the hammer-blow. She reaches the tunnel watcher before his head turns and knocks him down behind the stacked billets.

Sera

Sera

Now, Katie!

Katie drives her shoulder into the coal basket. It tips across the forge floor, scattering embers and choking the rite’s harsh light beneath a wash of gray ash.

The hammerers falter as darkness folds over the chamber. Artok nods once, waits until Sera and Katie clear the chain’s path, then reaches down and hauls it toward the gallery.

Katie

Katie

The anvil is moving. Pull!

The chain snaps taut with a brutal clang. The rune-stamped anvil grinds free of its place, dragging across the stone as black fire gutters along its inscriptions.

Director's note

I pull the anvil with me as I collapse the gallery behind us, looking back to check if the hooded ritualist is sustaining the rite

The Anvil's Dark Trail
the hooded ritualist
The Hooded Ritualist

Artok checks his gear across the overlook, then meets Sera’s gaze and Katie’s. Their brief adventuring lives have already hardened into proven courage. He cracks his neck and settles his grip.

The hammerers strike together below. In that thunder, Sera drops from the gallery and Katie sends the coal basket sprawling, ash swallowing the forge’s harsh light.

Sera

Sera

Now, Da!

Katie

Katie

The fire is choked. Pull it clear!

Artok nods, waits for both women to clear the chain, then hauls. The anvil grinds free, its black-edged runes guttering as the chain snaps taut.

He drags the anvil into the gallery, then shoulders a rotten brace loose behind it. Timbers collapse across the passage, sealing the raiders away as dust rolls through the dark.

At the overlook’s edge, Artok takes water from Sera, washes his torn palm, and wraps it from his thigh bag. Looking back, he sees the hooded ritualist still touching the anvil’s fading mark.

Rune-stamped anvil

Director's note

I see the hooded ritualist still touching the fading mark and think back on my occult knowledge trying to figure out a way to stop what he's attempting

The Anvil's Dark Trail
the hooded ritualist
The Hooded Ritualist

The fallen brace settles behind the anvil. Through a narrowing gap, the raiders shout and hammer at the debris while the hooded ritualist remains bent over the fading mark.

Artok keeps one hand on the chain and looks back. The hooded ritualist’s fingers have not lifted; black fire crawls thinly along the rune-stamped face.

Artok Rune

Artok Rune

The touch is sustaining the inscription’s answer. Break the contact, erase the active rune, or carry the anvil beyond its reach.

The occult pattern is not a spell floating in the air. It is worked into the steel, and the ritualist is feeding it through deliberate contact rather than creating anything apart from the inscription.

Sera

Sera

Da, the passage is holding. But that mark is still answering him.

Katie

Katie

Then we must put distance between the anvil and his hand before the rite finds its road again.

Dust thickens in the gallery as the three retreat with the anvil. Behind them, the trapped raiders pound at stone, and the ritualist’s black glow thins but does not yet die.

“Can the fading mark still reach the town?”

NO, BUT (Likely, rolled 71)

The anvil crosses the gallery’s threshold, and the black fire along its face gutters. The fading mark cannot carry its answer beyond the buried chamber, let alone reach the town.

Sera

Sera

It failed, Da. The mark died before it found a road upward.

Katie

Katie

Not entirely. Look at the ash beneath it. The lines are turning toward the old workings, away from the valley.

A hair-thin trail of pale ash crawls from the anvil’s last glow into a crack behind the collapsed brace. It ends at a second inscription buried in the mine wall, untouched but faintly warm.

Artok Rune

Artok Rune

The anvil was not the road to town. It was a key answering another rune below us.

Raider 2

Raider 2

You have taken the vessel, smith, but the deep mark remains. Follow it, and you will find what the rite was truly built to open.

The voice comes through the settling stone, thin and certain. Behind Artok, the trapped raiders fall silent; ahead, the buried inscription gives one slow pulse, offering a new path beneath the mine.

Director's note

I examine the buried inscription for a way to stop the rite, while Sera interrogates the trapped raider

Artok checks the anvil’s chain, then looks to Sera and Katie across the gallery. Their brief lives on the road have already hardened into proven courage. He cracks his neck and gathers his gear.

Sera gives Artok water. He rinses the torn left palm, draws a bandage from his thigh bag, and wraps it lightly before returning both hands to the chain.

Artok nods once. Sera moves to the collapsed brace while Katie studies the ash trail, and he waits until both women clear the pull before hauling the anvil onward.

The anvil drags across the gallery. Artok wrenches a rotten support free, sending stone and timber down behind them. Through the narrowing gap, the hooded ritualist still touches the fading mark.

Artok Rune

Artok Rune

The inscription is the spell’s only vessel. Break its active lines or sever the answering contact, and the rite must fail.

Artok kneels at the buried inscription. Its pale grooves turn beneath the wall toward deeper workings, while the ash gathers at one broken-looking junction that may be deliberately sealed.

Sera

Sera

You in the dark. Who built this mark, and what waits below it? Speak before the stones finish closing.

“I sever the ritualist’s contact with the anvil”

SUCCESS (Great Strength, rolled +0)

Artok plants both boots and hauls the chain hard. The anvil lurches across the gallery, and the hooded ritualist’s fingers slip from its fading mark.

The final pull tears the answering contact apart. A sharp crack runs through the buried inscription, while the chain bites Artok’s bandaged palm and opens a fresh line of blood.

Black fire gutters across the anvil and dies. Behind the fallen brace, the hooded ritualist recoils as the trapped raiders’ hammering breaks into startled curses.

Artok studies the buried inscription through the dust. His occult knowledge finds the truth in its geometry: the broken junction is a seal, not damage, and the severed answer can no longer feed it.

Sera

Sera

You heard me. Who built this mark, and what waits below it? Answer before the passage closes.

Sera crouches by the blocked gap, keeping her weapon trained through the dust. Katie braces the anvil’s chain while silence gathers beyond the stones.

Raider 2

Raider 2

The mark was made for what sleeps below. You have broken its hand, smith, but not its door.

The buried grooves dim to cold stone. Whatever lies beneath remains sealed, and the anvil’s stolen power is no longer answering the ritualist.
