Prodigal yet otherwise ordinary student in the royal guard, intending to prove herself despite her seeming mundaneness in an otherwise fantastical world. She heralds from a rich family of aristocrats in the sandy dunes of the world- but her name means nothing outside her harsh desert homeland. She is moral, and believes what she does is right, intending to always help others before she helps herself, even her foes. But, she is also short-tempered, and a little too eager to prove herself at times.

GOAL & MOTIVE

She wants to prove herself and spread the valor of her family's name, while also remaining moral and just in a world where power easily corrupts. She knows her family was not the best of people- yet deep down she still believes they were worthy of life and she curses the killer of her kin. Though, conflict brews in her heart when she thinks of what she would do if she ever saw them again. She believes, though not with her whole heart as the years bore down on her hope for a brighter future, that she can return to her homeland and instate peace and morale justice there with her own hand.

Magic is genetic and must be learnt, but some bloodlines are more in tune with magic and have access to spells others don't. Because of this, people with magic genes are trafficked more frequently, and clans arrange marriages over this.

CHARACTERS

HISTORY & EVENTS

Though she does not openly disclose this information; Maryam is actually one of two survivors of her clan's massacre- the other being her brother, who she has not seen in many years. The two's last communication was that they should never see or speak to each other again to maintain safety, and though Maryam agreed, deep down her heart aches to see her brother once again. Maryam's clan- the Rhukkhadevata clan- were aristocrats- slaveowners and corrupt politicans. They were, for the most part, morally questionable people. Marissa knew this, and defied against her family to join the royal guard of the kingdom of Maternius, a much more benevolent kingdom whose moral code heavily contrasted her clan's. This was what enabled her and her twin brother, Mariposo, to survive the clan's massacre at the hands of mercenaries. Not a just bloodshed- just a transfer of power from one cruel hand to another.
