The Scavenger Emerges from the Gloom

The crystalline floor shatters into fine dust as the gravity pocket pulses. A new figure emerges from the gloom, his armor jagged and stained with ancient soot.

Varrick

Varrick

Your soul is a leaky vessel, boy. I have come to plug the holes and claim the wreckage.

Eolsi

Eolsi

This man smells of ozone and rusted iron. He is not here to save me from the Goddess, he is here to scavenge the remains.

Kaelen

Kaelen

Stay back, Varrick. He is already claimed by the void. Do not make this harder than it needs to be.

Varrick

Varrick

Claimed? No. He is just a snack that hasn't realized he is being eaten yet.

Eolsi pivots, his boots finding purchase on the slick, shifting dust. He lunges toward the narrow exit, but his heel catches on a jagged shard of calcified light. His balance falters, and he slams into the unstable ground. Varrick moves with unnatural, fluid speed, his heavy boots pinning Eolsi's shadow to the floor before he can regain his footing.

Varrick

Varrick

Your legs are as weak as your memory.

Eolsi

Eolsi

The air is thinning. If I struggle, the gravity pocket will tear the floor out from under us entirely. I need to force him to look at me, to see what this parasite really is.

Veda

Varrick, stop. The Goddess does not appreciate interference with her collection.

Varrick

Varrick

[Looking down at Eolsi:0] The Goddess collects stories. I only collect the scraps. What will you give me to walk away, boy?

You give him a relic of transform

His greed is a predictable vibration. If I offer him something that shimmers with more promise than my soul, he will lose his grip.

Holding the Sun-Crowned Amulet fragment up so it catches the ambient glow of the crypt

Eolsi

Eolsi

You want scraps? Take this. It is a piece of a dying god, and it burns with a hunger that makes my own look like a candle.

Varrick

Varrick

His eyes widen as he releases Eolsi’s shoulder, reaching greedily for the relic A fragment of the Sun-Crown? You are either a fool or a suicide, boy.

Eolsi

Eolsi

He’s taking the bait. The moment his fingers brush the metal, the demon blood within me will show him the rot beneath his own skin.

Varrick, do not touch that. You have no idea what curse clings to that metal.

The gravity pocket surges, the unstable floor groaning as the space between the scavenger and the thief distorts. Eolsi releases the fragment, his hand twitching as the relic arcs through the swirling dust toward Varrick.

Lunging forward, his fingers clawing at the empty air toward the descending metal

Varrick

Varrick

Mine! It is finally mine!

Eolsi

His soul is a tapestry of rot and jagged edges. I can see the seams tearing already.

As the shard closes the distance, Varrick’s palm snaps toward the relic, but his eyes widen not with triumph, but with the sudden, terrible realization of what he has invited into his own mind.

Varrick accepts

The gravity pocket pulses violently, the air turning thick and viscous as Varrick’s fingers brush the jagged relic. Instead of the shard settling into his palm, it vibrates with a high-pitched whine that shatters the surrounding glass floor into crystalline confetti.

Varrick

Varrick

The scavenger recoils, his back arching as the shard emits a blinding, violet glare It burns! This is not power, it is a cage!

Eolsi

Eolsi

My gamble failed. The relic isn't just a trap for his greed, it's a conduit. He isn't catching the artifact, he's becoming a host for the very thing I tried to bargain away.

The gravity pocket collapses inward, dragging Varrick toward the center of the distortion. He claws at the air, his boots skidding across the disintegrating floor, while the shard remains suspended in the air between you, pulsating with an hungry, unnatural light that seems to feed on his desperate screams.

The floor beneath your own feet gives way, turning to fine sand. How do you stop him before the distortion tears both of you into the void?

You launch yourself toward the edge of the crypt, your boots finding purchase on a narrow, calcified ridge of rock that hasn't yet surrendered to the vortex. As the floor drops away beneath Varrick, you feel the sudden, jarring vacuum pull at your ankles, but you lean into the momentum of your own sprint, vaulting over the chasm.

Eolsi

Eolsi

Not today. I leave the relic to the gravity, and the gravity to the scavenger. My life is worth more than a piece of ancient debris.

You land heavily on the far side of the crumbling chamber, the air whistling through the widening rift behind you. Varrick’s scream is cut short as the gravity well implodes, sealing the center of the room in a flash of violet light that momentarily blinds everything in the crypt. Silence rushes in to fill the void, leaving only the sound of shifting sand and the heavy, rhythmic breathing of your companions watching from the shadows.
