Silent Understanding in the Rain

After closing, a quiet cafe inside the Shopping Mall becomes the band’s small venue. Tables are pushed aside, chairs form a loose semicircle, and warm pendant lights soften the empty room.

Hanashi checks her flute and violin while Kurimoto tunes his violin and Narutomo tests the hand drum. The cafe staff arrange the last drinks along the counter.

Saki arrives with Emu and Nene. Two Miyamasuzaka classmates follow them, one a petite girl with a yellow cardigan and bobbed black hair, the other a tall girl with a red scarf and braided brown hair.

Saki places her drink beside an empty chair and looks toward Kana. The instruments settle into ready positions, while the finished song waits at the top of the music stand.

Kana places the marked setlist where everyone can see it. Her song remains last, while the band settles into the opening arrangement and the cafe audience quiets.

Hanashi gives Kana a small nod, then begins the first introduction with the flute. Kurimoto and Narutomo follow, starting the setlist together as Saki listens from the front row.

The opening song fills the cafe in a careful acoustic blend. Kana’s first guitar pick slips beneath a chair, costing her the spare she had kept ready, but the performance continues without stopping.

The setlist unfolds without a stumble. Kana supports each arrangement on guitar while Hanashi’s flute, Sugito’s violin, and Aka’s hand drum keep the small cafe moving from song to song.

Between pieces, the four performers make brief adjustments: a page turns, a string is checked, and the drum’s softened pulse returns. The audience remains attentive, drinks cooling on the tables.

About forty-five minutes pass in the warm pendant light. The preceding song resolves, and the four musicians let its final chord fade before moving to the last place on the list.

Hanashi raises her flute, Sugito settles his violin, and Aka rests his hands above the drum. Kana’s guitar waits at the opening chord as the cafe grows quiet for her song.

The count lands clearly in the quiet cafe. Kana strikes the opening chord, and Hanashi Nin’s flute enters after it, light enough to preserve the song’s first breath.

Kurimoto Sugito’s violin joins with a warm, measured line while Narutomo Aka settles the hand drum beneath them. The arrangement gathers without rushing, each instrument taking its place around Kana’s guitar.

At the front table, Saki keeps both hands around her drink. Emu leans forward with shining attention, while Nene watches the musicians with a guarded but unmistakably pleased expression.

The first verse opens into its familiar spaces. Kana’s guitar carries the melody toward the final song’s carefully held pauses, and the cafe listens without interrupting.

The first verse passes gently, each instrument honoring the spaces Kana shaped into the arrangement. The cafe remains still except for the blended acoustic lines and quiet rain beyond the windows.

Hanashi’s flute follows Kana’s phrasing without crowding it. Sugito’s violin warms the transitions, while Aka keeps the hand drum soft beneath the guitar’s steady lead.

The final verse arrives. Kana leaves the marked pause open, and the silence holds cleanly before the band answers together, full but restrained.

The last chorus rises around Kana’s guitar, carrying warmth through the cafe. Every entrance lands clearly, and the emotional shape remains quiet, spacious, and complete.

Kana plays the final chord. It rings out clear and pure, suspended beneath the pendant lights until it gently disappears. No one moves during the last breath of silence.
