The concealed stair descends into a neglected shrine. Hagrtich enters alone; Captain Veyra and her pirates remain below the roofline, scattered beyond sight after their fall.
At its end, a stone chamber overlooks several passageways. An extinguished brazier crouches at the center, ringed by carved warnings worn smooth by dust and years.

Hagrtich Ssazar
The newer footprints pass beneath the warnings; the older tracks were made with greater care.
Fresh pirate bootprints cross toward the widest passage, disturbing a gray veil of dust. Beside them, older deliberate tracks approach the brazier, then vanish at its rim.
No guardian stirs among the shadowed corridors. Yet shallow slots in the walls, hairline seams in the floor, and sootless vents suggest defenses waiting for the wrong step.
A low draft carries three scents: cold stone from the left passage, stale incense from the center, and damp metal from the right. The shrine offers a rare moment to inspect before choosing a route.

Discover the shrine's safeguard
“Before proceeding toward either footpath, I inspect the brazier, approaching it carefully, and deliberately stepping over the old prints on the ground. I do not touch the brazier physically, just observe it and its details, in search of something that may aid in the correct footpath to choose from.”
SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled +2)
Hagrtich advances on the brazier with measured care, placing each bare foot beyond the older prints. Dust settles softly around his claws as he crosses the warning ring.

Hagrtich Ssazar
The old tracks stop at the brazier, but the draft continues beneath it.
From above, the brazier is a squat basin of blackened stone, its rim carved with three channels pointing toward the passages. No ash remains within it.
Its interior bears a shallow spiral, polished at the center by repeated contact, while the surrounding dust lies undisturbed. The worn spiral aligns with the central passage.
A faint warmth lingers beneath the stone, strongest along the channel aimed left. The cold passage carries no matching trace, and the damp-metal draft from the right feels wholly external.
The brazier therefore marks the central route as deliberate and the left route as magically connected, while the right passage offers only the scent of exposed metal. Hagrtich has his clue without touching the shrine.
“I make my decision swiftly. No time for lingering. However, I am purposeful in my approach still, and make an intention to still move stealthily, and cautiously. I move in a quadruped lope, low to the ground on all fours, my forked tongue flaring out of my snout occasionally to act as a constant reminder of the nearing metallic tang.”
SUCCESS (Superb Stealth, rolled -2)

Hagrtich drops onto all fours and slips from the brazier toward the right passage, his cloak brushing stone as his tail follows in silence.
His forked tongue flickers repeatedly, sorting cold dust from the metallic tang. Each careful lope places his claws beyond the faint seams crossing the floor.

Hagrtich Ssazar
The metal scent is fresh, and it grows stronger.
At the passage mouth, one claw settles on a concealed copper plate. It gives a soft click, and a brittle chime answers somewhere in the walls.
The sound fades without a second warning. Hagrtich continues low and swift, reaching a cramped antechamber where damp metal reeks from an open stone niche.
Inside rests a corroded iron coffer on a raised shelf, its lid already ajar. Black water beads along the floor beneath it, and the chime has left his passage noticed.
“Does the iron coffer contain anything inside of it beside the black water?”
NO (Even, rolled 61)

The corroded lid hangs open on one twisted hinge. Inside, the coffer holds nothing but a shallow pool of black water, its surface trembling faintly.
No jewels, sealed relic, lining, or hidden compartment breaks the iron's empty interior. The water has gathered in the bottom through years of seepage.

Hagrtich Ssazar
The coffer was opened before, and whatever it held is gone.
A bead slips over the shelf's edge and falls into the pooled water. The tiny splash echoes through the cramped antechamber, then dies among the stone passages.
The damp-metal scent comes from the coffer itself and the wet niche behind it, not from any treasure concealed within. Rust flakes surround the shelf like dark scales.
Beyond the antechamber, the shrine remains still. The earlier chime has announced passage somewhere in the walls, but nothing yet enters the chamber or bars the way.
“Does the metallic scent within the passage carry beyond the coffer?”
YES (Unlikely, rolled 18)

The metallic scent does not end at the coffer. It threads through the wet niche and slips onward into a narrow passage beyond, sharper where the stone remains damp.
There, black stains stripe the lower wall in a broken trail. They are not rust alone; each mark points deeper beneath the shrine.

Hagrtich Ssazar
The coffer was a container, not the source.
A thin draft follows the scent back toward the antechamber, carrying a faint mineral chill and the dry rasp of something shifting far below.
Behind Hagrtich, the empty coffer gives a small metallic groan as its warped hinge settles. No footsteps answer, yet the shrine no longer feels untouched.
The trail beyond the niche is cramped but passable, its floor marked by damp scuffs and scattered rust flakes. Whatever stained the passage continued toward the buried chambers.
“The straightforward, narrow path isn't something I like the look of. If it is to be a trap, it appears quite obvious. To avoid it, I dig my claws into the walls beside the niche, then gouge them through dusted-over seams to force myself upside-down. Now on the ceiling, I proceed, moving still with caution as I advance down the trail.”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +2)

Hagrtich digs his claws into the niche walls, finding dusted-over seams beneath the damp stone. He pulls himself upward until his body hangs inverted from the ceiling.
His cloak falls toward the floor while his tail steadies him against the cramped arch. He advances upside-down, claws testing each ceiling joint before bearing weight.

Hagrtich Ssazar
The trail is beneath me, but the stone above carries the safer passage.
Below, the black stains continue uninterrupted along the narrow floor. None of the hidden seams beneath his hands shift, and no chime answers his careful crossing.
The passage bends beneath a low vault. Damp scuffs end at the bend, while fresh scratches mark the ceiling ahead, matching the spread of his claws.
Beyond the bend, a buried chamber opens below him. A dull amber gleam leaks through a cracked stone grille, revealing the first unmistakable sign of something valuable or enchanted.
“My head swivels toward the light source in the chamber. After a moment of consideration, I twist atop the ceiling and jab my claws through the holes in the grille. Applying a bit of force, I make an effort to bend the metal just a few inches more to allow me to pass through the grille's already present opening.”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +1)

Hagrtich’s head swivels toward the amber glow below. He studies the cracked grille from the ceiling, measuring its weakened bars and the opening already split through them.
He twists atop the vault, anchoring his tail against the stone arch. Both clawed hands descend through the grille’s holes and seize the corroded metal.
With steady force, he bends the bars outward. Rust flakes scatter into the chamber, and the opening widens several inches with a low, reluctant creak.
Hagrtich folds his shoulders and slips through headfirst, cloak scraping the grille. His claws catch the inner ledge, lowering his long body safely into the buried chamber.
The amber gleam comes from a squat stone altar beneath the grille. Upon it rests a palm-sized crystal sealed in tarnished bronze, glowing through hairline fractures.
The light comes from the crystal, not the metal.
Around the altar, old channels converge beneath a crust of black mineral. The chamber holds no stirring guardian, only the crystal’s muted pulse and the smell of dust.
“I drop from the ceiling and land in a low crouch directly in front of the stone altar. "At last." I find myself saying subconsciously, feeling a pleased upward tug in my snout. Before immediately seizing the crystal however, I inspect the altar to ensure I can do so safely without triggering anything.”
SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled -1)

Hagrtich drops from the ceiling and lands in a low crouch before the altar. Dust puffs around his bare claws, and his tail steadies him without disturbing the crystal.

Hagrtich Ssazar
At last.
The pleased lift of his snout fades as he examines the altar. The converging channels are pressure grooves, and the black mineral crust conceals hair-thin seams around the bronze seal.
He traces the stone with one claw, finding the safest approach: the crystal may be lifted straight upward, but twisting the bronze would wake the channels.

Hagrtich Ssazar
The seal is meant to lift, not turn.
His claw slips on damp mineral and scrapes across the altar, splitting a small scale at his fingertip. A bright bead of blood falls onto the black crust.
The crust drinks the blood with a faint hiss. No trap answers, but the altar’s channels briefly glow amber, confirming the danger and the safe method.
