The beach falls away behind them as Yama pushes into the forest. Roots knot the ground under a close, green roof, and the heat turns damp and dim in an instant.
Young Dave. follows with his big sword at his side, the scavenged breakfast shifting in the others' hands. The trees swallow the shoreline noise, leaving only dripping leaves and the soft scrape of feet.

Yama
Keep close. The shore was too open.

Rosemary
This place is dark, but it feels safer than the beach.

Stella Nabokov
Oh! Look at the roots, they are like little seats, or traps, or maybe both.

Kazeki
Quiet. Something moved ahead.
They slow at a narrow clearing where a fallen trunk bridges a shallow, fern-choked dip. The air smells of wet bark and salt carried inland.

“Toss a rock at whatever is ahead.”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

Young Dave. flicks a pebble toward the dark patch Kazeki noticed. It skips once over the roots, then twice, and vanishes into the ferns.
A shape bursts up where it lands, not a beast, but a lean wild dog with a strip of bark caught in its fur. It snaps at the air, then bolts sideways into the undergrowth.

Kazeki
Good. It was only a stray.

Yama
Still, this clearing has cover. We can use the trunk and the roots.

Rosemary
There is a dry patch beneath the fallen trunk. That could work for a camp.

Stella Nabokov
And if something screeches again, I want a tree between me and it.
Kazeki crouches by the dip and points out a windbreak of roots and fern. Yama steps to the trunk, testing its width with one boot, while the others gather tighter under the canopy, all eyes still on the black trees.
“Craft a hut from the windbreak of roots and ferns”
SUCCESS (Great Crafting, rolled +2)

Young Dave. bends the root windbreak inward and weaves ferns through it with quick, practiced hands. The shelter takes shape under the fallen trunk, low and tight against the clearing.
He adds a second layer of leaves over the exposed side, then braces the whole thing with a split branch. The little hut stops looking like a chance tangle and starts looking like cover.

Rosemary
That will hold the wind better than I expected.

Kazeki
Good work. We can defend this corner.
Yama tests the entrance with a hand, then steps back and nods toward the dark trees. The forest stays quiet, but only for a breath.

Stella Nabokov
Quiet like that is never reassuring.
Inside the new shelter, the breakfast bundle sits just out of the damp. Beyond the roots, something gives a faint screech from deeper in the woods.
