Cold light seeps back through Young Dave.'s eyelids. Dust tastes dry on his tongue, and the floor is gone from under him, replaced by a soft bed of cloth and the smell of ink and old stone.
His body knits whole. The ache leaves his ribs, then his arm, then even the sting in his knuckles, until he feels fit for the fight again.

Rosemary
He is awake. Dave, do you hear me?
Rosemary leans over him in the dim chamber, one hand braced on a shelf-edge. Yama stands guard near the seam of light, while Stella and Kazeki watch the opening with hard, bright eyes.

Kazeki
The hag is still near. The book is here, too.
At Young Dave.'s side lies the spell book, its cover faintly warm. Beyond it, the hidden slit in the wall throbs with pale light, as if waiting for a hand to choose it.

Stella Nabokov
Do we take the book now, or do we chase her through that seam?
The chamber holds its breath, and the path forward hangs open for Young Dave. to decide.
“Take the book and run through the portal.”
