The shed is barely wide enough for Mara, Lazorus, and Lylith. Mara slips inside after them and braces the warped door while the three guardians remain outside beneath the branches.

The door settles into its frame with a wet wooden groan. Through gaps in the boards, the guardians stand motionless, keeping their silent formation between the shed and the dark forest.

Do not set her down yet. The floor remembers weight, and this place has not forgotten the people who hid here.

Mara wedges the shuttered lantern beneath the latch. As Lazorus shifts his grip on Lylith, pain pulses through the wounded leg and fresh blood darkens the bandage.

One floorboard lifts under Mara’s probing fingers. Beneath it lies a leather ledger stamped with the stone-ring symbols, its margins crowded with cramped warnings from another reader.

Mara Vey

There. A fresh entry. It names you, Lazorus, and gives a way to command what answered the ring. Read it aloud, and the claim may sink deeper.

Learn what the ledger reveals about protecting Lylith

“Lazorus leans his scythe against the wooden wall and slides gently to the floor keeping Lylith in his lap.”

Lazorus leans his scythe against the wooden wall, its haft settling without a clatter. Keeping Lylith bundled securely against him, he lowers himself carefully.

His wounded leg bends under him, but he reaches the floor without dropping her. He settles with Lylith in his lap, her blanket gathered beneath his arms.

Mara Vey

Mara Vey

Good. Keep her held. The floor has accepted your weight, and it has not stirred beneath the child.

Mara withdraws her hand from the lifted floorboard and draws the ledger into the lantern’s narrow amber reach. Dust clings to its cracked leather cover.

Mara Vey

Now you can read without falling. The entry was written by someone who knew the ring’s hunger, and feared what it would make obedient.

The ledger lies open between them. Beneath the cramped warnings, a fresh line of ink waits across the page, ending in a blank space shaped for Lazorus’s name.

“Lazorus asks Mara,"What happens if I sign here?" pointing at the blank spot in the ledger.”

What happens if I sign here?

Lazorus points to the blank space without releasing Lylith. The ink beside it trembles, then draws a thin line toward his fingertip.

Mara Vey

Mara Vey

Do not touch it. The ledger does not record a promise. It records who may be claimed by the ring.

Before Mara can close the book, the blank space fills with cramped black strokes. They form Lazorus’s name, though no hand holds the pen.

Mara Vey

Mara Vey

It has heard your question as consent to be considered. The claim is not complete, but it will not forget you now.

The fresh writing sinks into the page. The ledger snaps shut around the edge of Lazorus’s pointing finger, stopping just short of skin, and the lantern flame gutters.

Mara Vey

Mara Vey

We cannot use that instruction safely. If you open it again, it will demand a witness, not an answer.

Mara pulls the ledger away and wedges it beneath the lifted floorboard. The blank place is hidden, but the pressure of the unseen claim remains in the room.

“Lazorus asks Mara,"What happens if I sign here?" pointing at the blank spot in the ledger.”

FAILURE (Great Reasoning, rolled -2)

The ledger’s pressure fades beneath the floorboard, but the name it wrote remains faintly visible through the warped wood. Lylith stays still in Lazorus’s arms.

Mara Vey

You would not become its servant by signing. You would become the ring’s named possession, answerable whenever it opened a path.

Mara keeps one hand pressed over the hidden ledger. Her expression tightens as the boards give a faint, measured creak beneath her palm.

But the margin showed something before the book closed. A countermark exists. It can deny the claim, if a living witness reads it while the ledger is opened.

A narrow strip of paper slips from beneath the floorboard and stops against Mara’s boot. Its ink bears the same angular cuts as the stone ring, but the final mark is crossed out.

Mara Vey

Mara Vey

I can show you that countermark, but not here and not casually. The book will ask whom I witness, and it already knows your name.

Mara lifts the loose paper without touching the ledger. Beneath the shed, something answers with one dull knock, then becomes silent again.

“Lazorus asks Mara,"What happens if I sign here?" pointing at the blank spot in the ledger.”

The answer settles with the weight of a verdict. Beneath the floorboard, the ledger’s pressure tightens around the written name, while Lylith remains still against Lazorus’s chest.

But there is a countermark. A living witness can read it while the ledger is open and deny the claim.

A narrow strip of paper slips from beneath the floorboard and stops at Mara’s boot. Its angular mark matches the stone ring, except for a final stroke crossed out.

I can show you the countermark. The book will ask whom I witness, and it already knows your name.
