Escape into the Maintenance Shaft

Justin Forester slips into the maintenance shaft as the steel door behind him booms inward. Dust scrapes his glasses, and the narrow corridor swallows the last of the server room light.

Adrian Vale squeezes in beside him, breathing hard. Behind them, flashlight beams stab through the open service hatch, searching the dark.

Move, Justin. I am not getting caught in here.

Justin edges forward in the cramped passage. The hatch yaws wider, and the security officers’ boots scrape metal on the other side.

Stop where you are. Now.

Justin Forester

Keep moving. The corridor’s our only way out.

Adrian glances back at the hatch, then at Justin’s gear. The pressure in his face shifts from panic to calculation.

Then you better know where this shaft goes, because I am not going back.

Escape the maintenance shaft

✓ Quest Accepted

Reach a way out of the facility

Considering that I work on the wiring in this section, I should know where the exits are and where they go. I try to navigate us as close as I can towards the garage.

YES, AND MORE (Likely, rolled 4)

Justin traces the familiar color-coded conduits along the ceiling, his memory of the facility schematics clicking into place as the wiring patterns align with his mental map.

The blue lines lead straight to the sub-level garage, and there is a maintenance bypass just ahead that avoids the main security checkpoints.

He points toward a junction where the conduit splits, confirming a direct, unmonitored path to the vehicles.

We follow the path to the nearest room to the garage... there is no direct access to the garage from the maintenance crawlspace, but it gets right next door to the elevator shaft.

SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +1)

Escape into the Maintenance Shaft

Justin moves with the conduit map in his head, taking the branching crawlspace instead of the straight run. The shaft bends, narrows, and then opens beside a reinforced service room marked for elevator controls.

He stops at the access grille and looks through. A metal ladder drops beside the elevator shaft, and the room beyond is empty except for a dead console and a wall of maintenance labels.

Justin Forester

Justin Forester

This is it. Room next to the shaft.

Adrian squeezes in behind him, breathing hard, then glances back the way they came as a faint shout carries through the ducts.

Adrian Vale

Adrian Vale

We do not have much time. Is the ladder clear?

The room is reachable from the crawlspace, but the narrow opening makes their exit awkward, one at a time, with the shaft waiting below.

Justin Forester

Justin Forester

The shaft is right there. The room is the last stop before it.

Can I disable the elevator so we can climb down without security or the rapidly expanding number of T-virus infected zombie former coworkers cornering us?

YES, AND MORE (Likely, rolled 7)

Justin taps into the maintenance console, and the system responds with surprising fluidity, its architecture far less rigid than the server room's main terminal.

The elevator controls lock into a hard stop, and the emergency braking system engages with a heavy, metallic thud that echoes through the shaft, effectively sealing the car in place.

Justin Forester

The override worked, and the system even dumped the floor logs, giving us a clear path down the service ladder.

We climbed down the service elevator, hearing the security guard that was chasing us scream as T-virus infected zombies catch up to him. The screaming stops... eventually.

FAILURE (Fair Agility, rolled -2)

Escape into the Maintenance Shaft

Justin drops onto the service ladder and starts down, boots scraping wet metal. Halfway below the grille, his grip slips on a slick rung and his shoulder bangs the side rail, making the whole shaft ring.

He catches himself before he falls, but the jolt sends a loose tool tray clattering out of a wall niche and into the darkness below. The noise dies somewhere deep under them.

Above, the maintenance hatch stays ajar, and the pursuit at the top of the shaft goes oddly still. Whatever is moving in the corridor has reached the opening, and now it is funneled into the same narrow space.

Adrian grabs the ladder a few rungs above Justin, breathing hard, eyes fixed upward. His free hand points past Justin's hip toward a side maintenance crawl with a broken latch and a sliver of light leaking through it.

Adrian Vale

Adrian Vale

There, take that crawlspace. The ladder is compromised.

Justin is still on the ladder, not at the lower level yet, but the side passage is open enough to choose. Behind them, the shaft holds its breath.

"No, the crawlspace leads back where we started. It is down or nowhere. We keep going." I say as I continue down, frustrated with my clumsiness.

Escape into the Maintenance Shaft
Adrian Vale

Adrian Vale

Move, then. I am right behind you.

Justin shifts his weight cleanly, drops one rung, then another, the ladder steadier under him now. The broken-latch crawlspace stays open at his shoulder, but he commits to the vertical route and keeps descending.

Below, the shaft opens onto a grated landing and a heavy service door standing half ajar, its edge lit by a thin strip of emergency red. The route down is no longer just a passage, it becomes a destination.

Adrian Vale

Adrian Vale

That door is the only honest way out.

A hard metallic thump rolls down from above, then silence. The pursuit at the hatch stalls behind them as Justin reaches the landing.

He lands in a crouch beside the service door, the ladder now above and behind him. The shaft is still cramped, but the immediate chase has broken on the threshold.

We hurry out of the elevator service areas, right next to the access door to the garage. By law, these should be unlocked from the inside and an easy exit... as long as nothing is waiting for us...
