The Beacon's Teeth

Ten days out, Serafina is hunched over the cargo terminal, one claw tapping the same encrypted ping until the waveform stops pretending. The salvage review from the outpost is not a clearance tag. It is a beacon.

Serafina

Serafina

This is a tracker. And they let it ride with our registry.

The terminal throws up three more returns, then five. Their shuttle signature is bleeding across a tight band, and something out there is answering fast.

Nahuli

Nahuli

The pings are locking onto the same transponder hash.

Serafina

Serafina

Nahuli, get in here. Now. We have company, and they are not curious.

Nahuli reaches her side as the display blooms with a crude pursuit map. Three contacts, then a fourth, are converging from different vectors, all tightening on the shuttle like jaws.

Serafina

Serafina

If we burn the beacon, they will know. If we leave it, they keep tracking us. Pick the cleaner bad option.

Outside the cockpit skin, the stars stay cold and indifferent. Inside, the shuttle hums on, carrying a mistake that has finally grown teeth.

✓ Quest Accepted

Dump the beacon data to break the tracker

Bounce the signal data elsewhere and spoof the destination.

SUCCESS (Legendary Hacking, rolled -2)

The Beacon's Teeth

Nahuli slips to the terminal, threads the beacon feed through a clean spoof loop, and kicks the packet into a dead relay lane. The pursuit map stutters, then the converging tracks shear apart into false headings. Outside the shuttle, three hostile signatures drift away from their true vector.

A sharp crack snaps through the cargo bay as the terminal’s relay fuse pops. The display goes dim for a breath, and the scent of hot insulation leaks into the air.

Serafina

Serafina

There. That should smear the trail. For now.

Serafina

Serafina

Her hand tightens on the terminal edge, eyes flicking across the false routes with wary relief.

One of the inbound pings catches the spoof late and pivots, but it is chasing a ghost now. The shuttle’s registry still carries the original tag, yet the loudest hunter has lost its clean lock.

Serafina

Serafina

We bought time. Not silence.

A new warning blossoms on the cargo terminal, a thin-range probe scraping the shuttle skin from the outside. Somewhere in the dark, the hunters are testing the lie. Serafina looks to Nahuli, then to the half-faded route display, waiting for the next move.

Quest Complete

Dump the beacon data to break the tracker

I spoof the probe into a dead lane

SUCCESS (Legendary Hacking, rolled +1)

The Beacon's Teeth

Nahuli folds the probe’s feed into the same dead lane pattern, but this time he gives it a false heartbeat, a cold, empty corridor with no active traffic. The scrape on the hull goes thin and uncertain, as if the ship itself has gone dull to the outside sweep.

The cargo bay lights flicker once, then settle into a tired amber. On the terminal, the probe icon peels away from the shuttle skin and slides off toward nothing, satisfied by the lie.

Serafina

Serafina

That is better. If it keeps chasing dead space, we can breathe.

Serafina

Serafina

Her shoulders ease, but only a little, eyes still on the route seal packet and the cooling terminal.

A second contact blinks in from the outer sweep, then hesitates. The spoof does not stop the hunters, it only makes them disagree with each other. Their approach pattern fractures into separate vectors.

Serafina

Serafina

They’re splitting. If we dump the tag, we lose them. If we run clean, we may outrun the hunters before they sort this out.

The terminal spits up two options and a warning, one ugly and one uglier. Outside, the hull scrape fades, replaced by a distant pulse from somewhere farther out in the dark.

Time to get out of here. Mask our trail. We can go back on our normal path later.

SUCCESS (Legendary Engineering, rolled +2)

The Beacon's Teeth

Nahuli flips the shuttle’s comm routing into a cleaner spoof lattice, then folds the trail into a borrowed maintenance drift. The outbound signature loses its sharp edges and becomes ordinary, forgettable traffic.

On the terminal, the warning stack shrinks. The false heading dissolves into routine lane noise, and the ship’s identity sheds the last bright scraps of the beacon tag.

Serafina

Serafina

There. That should make us look boring enough to live.

Serafina taps the route packet once, then pulls it closer, her attention shifting from panic to timing.

Outside the hull, the probe scrape vanishes completely. In its place comes only the faint, directionless thrum of distant search traffic passing by on bad assumptions.

Nahuli

Nahuli

We can go back to the normal path later.

The terminal accepts the reroute, and the new course option settles into a quiet, workable line. The shuttle is hidden for now, but the next move is still theirs to choose.

Lose the pursuing hunters
