Mara's voice stays low and controlled, shaped by long practice with frightened patients. Behind her, footsteps pass, then stop; a metallic impact cracks through the connection.

Sarah looks from the live call to the district map. Mara trusts her for one urgent exchange, but the ledger offers no safe extraction route, and the impact comes again, closer to the phone.

Sarah relays Elijah’s directions while Mara moves. Her footsteps quicken through the dark hospital corridor, but the map’s service markings prove older than the current layout.

Sarah checks the facility map against the live call and sees the mistake: the corridor Elijah chose feeds into a renovation closure, not a protected clinical area. A red emergency indicator begins blinking beside Mara’s phone signal.

Mara slips into the observation room and drops the internal latch. It gives her a barrier, not safety, while the dark corridor leaves her visible behind the glass and the phone connection remains open.

Kingston Hospital rises around Elijah in fluorescent glare and disinfectant haze. He reaches the observation room in under eight minutes, arriving as Mara’s frightened face turns toward the corridor glass.

Mara’s shoulders drop with sudden relief, but she does not touch the latch. Beyond her, the dark corridor reflects only Elijah’s silhouette and the pulsing red emergency light.

Sarah’s voice remains steady in Elijah’s earpiece, distant from the hospital but connected to every word. The observation room gives Mara cover while its glass exposes anyone approaching.

A service elevator chimes somewhere beyond the imaging corridor. Mara keeps one hand on the latch, watching Elijah through the glass as the hospital’s normal sounds thin into silence.

The elevator chime cuts through the corridor silence. Sarah’s access review updates at the same moment, showing a Northstar contractor badge entered the hospital twelve minutes ago through the service entrance.

Mara’s face tightens behind the glass. A second access record appears, then disappears as someone disables the hospital’s local logging system from within the building.

The service elevator doors part at the far end. A lean adult man in a dark contractor jacket, with close-cropped black hair, medium-brown skin, and a narrow silver earpiece, steps into the red-lit corridor, his clipped badge hidden beneath one hand and his face turned toward the observation room.

The contractor stops beneath the emergency light and raises his eyes to Elijah’s silhouette. Behind the glass, Mara keeps the latch secured as the elevator doors close again.

Elijah steps into the corridor and closes the distance before the contractor can reach the observation room. The man raises a compact weapon, but Elijah knocks it aside and drives him into the elevator doors.

Elijah wrenches the contractor’s arm behind him and pins him against the elevator panel. The concealed badge slips free, and the weapon skids beneath a gurney parked by the wall.

Mara opens the observation-room door and moves straight to Elijah. He keeps the contractor controlled with one hand while guiding her behind his shoulder, away from the exposed glass.

Sarah directs them toward a staffed clinical wing while emergency lights recover. Elijah escorts Mara through the secured doorway, leaving the contractor immobilized and disarmed for hospital security.
