Adventure of Valencia 1

In the thicket’s dim green hush, Valencia catches her breath while the camp stirs beyond the leaves. The trembling child, now free of the worst of the bindings, slips a hand into a hidden pocket and draws out a tarnished locket.

The locket opens in their shaking palm, and the same crest gleams there, matching Valencia’s ring exactly. The child lifts their eyes to her, wide and searching, as if they have been waiting years for this moment.

The Grey Wolf keeps to Valencia’s flank, watchful and low, while the Young Wolf circles the clearing edge. The wounded Ogre Chief sags near the carved post, his strength ebbing as the glow paints the wood in gold.

Valencia rises from the brush and steps into the child’s view, one hand open, the other steady at her ring. The Grey Wolf shifts closer at her flank while the glow from the carved post washes the clearing in gold.

The Bound Child wipes their face with a trembling sleeve, then nods and mirrors Valencia’s crouch, eyes darting to the wolves instead of the ogre chief.

Valencia answers by pacing a slow arc, and the child follows it, turning their body toward the trees, then back to the clearing, learning the pack’s silent watch. The Young Wolf pauses at the perimeter, ears forward, as if approving the shape of it.

When the Bound Child lowers themselves beside the Grey Wolf, the wolf accepts them without challenge. The child’s shoulders ease, and the locket settles against the crest at their chest like it has found its place.

Valencia snaps the pack into motion. The Bound Child takes the cue, rising with the knife, while the Grey Wolf glides left and the Young Wolf circles right. The first ogre turns too late, and the clearing erupts into steel, teeth, and panic.

The child lunges when Valencia points, striking with a shaking but willing hand. Another ogre stumbles from the tents and gets driven back before it can rally the camp. The carved post throws gold across the bloodied ground as the wolves cut off escape.

By the time the shouting dies, the camp is still. Several ogres lie motionless among the trampled hides, and the last of the alarms go quiet in the trees. Valencia’s shoulder burns where a glancing blow caught her, and the bound knife is slick in the child’s hand.

The child kneels beside the glowing crest and presses the tarnished locket to it. Gold answers gold, and the marked metal fits the sign like an old vow returned. The Grey Wolf lowers his head near the child, calm as a guard at a true threshold.

Beyond the camp edge, branches stir with fresh movement, and the smell of more ogres drifts on the wind. The clearing holds its breath, waiting for Valencia to decide whether to search the dead or meet the next threat.
