Reflections on a Royal Heritage

The clearing falls still under moonlight. Valencia stands over the dead ogre, the second royal signet glinting in her hand, while her wolves circle close and begin to settle.

She turns the cold metal over. The crest catches silver light, sharp and formal, nothing like the fur, blood, and earth that raised her.

One wolf nudges her knee. Another lowers itself beside the ogre’s fallen branch, ears twitching, watchful but calm.

Two royal signs. Same crest. Same hands.

Valencia lowers herself to the grass. The ring and signet rest in her palm together, bright against her skin, as if they belong to a life she has only just found.

The pack answers with soft breaths and tail-thumps, not a hunt call now, but a quiet, patient presence. The south camp waits somewhere beyond the trees, and for this brief moment, the forest lets her breathe.

Reflections on a Royal Heritage

Valencia leans in, pressing the ogre’s stink into memory, then rises in one smooth motion. The wolves catch the trail at once, and she follows, silent and fast through the moonlit trees.

The scent leads south, past snapped fern and trampled moss, toward a darker line of pines where smoke begins to stain the air.

Valencia

Valencia

The crest is older than the ogre.

At the edge of the next clearing, Valencia sees it, a rough camp hidden under branches, crude hides and watch fires, with one small figure bound near the center.

The wolves fan out, wary but steady, while Valencia’s gaze catches on a carved post near the fire. The same crest, cut into weathered wood, not stolen, but displayed.

The signet in Valencia’s hand feels suddenly less like loot and more like a key, a mark of bloodline and passage. The child waits in the camp, and the camp itself wears her family’s sign.
