Moonlight threads through black firs as Valencia and her dire wolf pack pad into the clearing. The elk lies ahead, still, too still.
Valencia spots the throat first. The cut is clean, precise, nothing a wolf’s teeth could make.
A blade did this.
A low laugh slips from the trees. Something huge shifts in the shadows.

The Ogre
Easy now, little princess. I have something that belongs to your kind.
He steps into the light, broad-shouldered and grinning, one hand dangling a royal-looking heirloom that flashes silver-white.

The Ogre
Follow me, and perhaps your bloodline ends with answers instead of bones.
The pack snarls behind Valencia, circling the elk. The ogre lifts the trinket higher, just out of reach, and waits.

Force the ogre to reveal what happened to Valencia's parents
“I signal the pack to flank the ogre while I keep his eyes locked on mine. One of my wolves snatched the trinket out of his hands and another lunges for his throat and bites deeply with it's fangs.”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)
Valencia snaps her hand low and the pack answers as one. The ogre’s grin breaks when fur flashes in from both sides.
The trinket is yanked free in a blur of teeth and claws, skidding across the leaves to Valencia’s feet.
A second wolf hits high. The ogre jerks back with a shout, one hand flying to his throat as blood darkens his furred collar.

The Ogre
Fine, then. Listen well. Your mother wore that ring when we dragged them from the fire. Your father begged for mercy before the chief struck him down.
The words land like cold iron. The ogre staggers, snatching one step backward, and his heel snaps a branch loud enough to scatter the crows.

The Ogre
That was years ago, princess. Your blood bought us our feast.
He bares his teeth, then lurches away into the trees, leaving the heirloom in the grass while Valencia’s wolves snarl after him.

“I send the wolves after the fleeing ogre”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -1)

Valencia springs up and drives the pack after him. The wolves crash through bracken and shadow, forcing the ogre to choose speed over cover.
He answers with a snarl and a wild swing of his arm, flinging leaves and snapping twigs behind him as he plunges deeper between the trees.
One wolf catches his heel and tears loose a strip of hide, enough to make him stumble and leave a dark smear on the roots.

The Ogre
Enough, wolf-child. The chief took your mother’s ring from her own hand. Ask him what became of the baby if you want the rest.
The name hits the clearing like a thrown axe. The ogre’s head snaps back once, then he hurls himself onward, limping hard.
Valencia’s wolves keep pace, and the heirloom stays with her as the ogre flees empty-handed into the dark.
Behind them, the clearing falls quieter, but the churned ground, blood, and the ogre’s shouted clue leave no easy calm.

Escape the ogre
“I signal my wolves to flank him and cut off his path. They catch him and make him stop to face me. He sees my naked body and grins thinking he has the advantage. I grab a tree branch and wield it as a club and strike him in the head.”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +3)

Valencia whistles low, and the wolves break from the treeline in a clean arc. The ogre checks left, then right, and finds every path cut off.

The Ogre
Wait, wait... not here.
He turns back toward Valencia, panting, eyes darting over her and the branch in her hand.

The Ogre
The wolf-child is no easy prey.
Valencia snatches a fallen branch, steps in, and cracks it against his skull. The ogre folds to one knee, stunned, breath wheezing from him.
A leather cord slips from his belt as he drops. Tied to it is a second token, a battered signet stamped with a royal crest.

The Ogre
The chief kept the child. South camp. That is all I know.
He crouches in the dirt, dazed and trapped, while the wolves ring him and the night suddenly points Valencia toward a new trail.
“I tell my wolves to finish him off. They tear his body apart then I search his corpse.”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +1)

The wolves rush in at Valencia’s command, a dark whirl of teeth and fur. The ogre’s struggle breaks fast, and when the pack scatters, he lies still in the churned grass.
Valencia steps through the blood-smeared clearing and kneels by the body. She searches the torn belt, then the folds of hide and cord, finding the stolen heirloom and the battered signet.

Valencia
A royal crest. Not just one token.
Beside the corpse, the second signet catches the moonlight. Mud clings to its edge, but the mark is clear, and so is the trail south.

The Ogre
Chief... kept the child. Asked no names. Only took her alive.
His voice fades into a wet rasp. The wolves go alert at the treeline, watching the dark beyond the clearing.

The Ogre
If you want truth, follow... south camp...
