Dawn washes the plain in pale gold. Rested after trading watches, Issac, Lillia, Mikka, Marcus, and Siegfried leave the riverbank, following the steady purple marks between scattered stones.

Lillia Rhen
The trail is unchanged. Keep to its edge, and avoid stepping directly on the marks until we understand what they preserve.
The party advances cautiously. Near the first rise, a separate line of footprints breaks away from the river and travels opposite the purple trail, confirming that someone reached the site before them.

Marcus Rhen
Those tracks lead away from the pass. Whoever made them came here, then chose another route.
The purple marks climb toward a distant mountain pass. As the slope steepens, a weathered carving appears in the stone: a dormant garden marker bearing the split crown.

Lillia Rhen
This is it. The marker links the trail to the royal shade garden, the garden where nothing grows. The successor was sent beyond these mountains.
The marks fade at the pass’s first shadow, dividing around the sealed marker before vanishing among pale stones. Lillia opens her journal and waits for Issac’s next choice.
✓ Quest Accepted
Identify who left the footprints
“I inspect the footprints for direction, age, and signs of what made them, seeing the other trail lead into the mountain pass. "There were likey two people, one who leads away from the moutain, and the other that leads into the mountain," I surmise. Should I keep seeking the successor or follow the other trail?”
SUCCESS (Superb Survival, rolled -1)
Issac kneels beside the pale stones, examining the impressions without touching them. The tracks are recent enough to retain softened edges, but older than the purple marks.

Issac Rivendohr
There were likely two people. One led away from the mountain, and the other led into it.
The footprints confirm his reading. One set is lighter and narrower, with careful steps descending toward the river. The other belongs to a heavier traveler carrying a long object.

Lillia Rhen
The heavier trail enters the pass, and its stride is deliberate. The lighter traveler turned back toward the plains, perhaps after reaching this marker.

Marcus Rhen
Then the mountain trail is the stronger lead. If the successor passed through here, we should follow before wind or weather erases it.

Mikka Rosethorn
The other trail may still explain what happened here. We can mark its direction and return if the pass gives us nothing.
The evidence settles the tracks' direction and age, but not the travelers' identities. Both routes remain readable, with the mountain path leading toward the distant pass.
Director's note
Issac and the party plan to follow the heavier trail, but before they do, they need to stock up on extra rations. Thankfully, the Plains are filled with cows, so Siegfried, Issac, and Marcus head to the fields to hunt
Director's note
Lillia and Mikka stay by the mountain entrance

The party leaves the mountain entrance behind, keeping the heavier footprints marked in memory. Lillia closes her journal, its lone garden clue safely tucked among the pages.

Lillia Rhen
Mikka and I will remain here. If the trail changes, we can signal from the marker.

Mikka Rosethorn
Bring back enough food for the pass. We will keep watch and make sure the entrance stays undisturbed.
Lillia and Mikka settle near the mountain’s first shadow while Issac, Marcus, and Siegfried descend toward the broad grazing fields. Morning light glints across the grass.

Siegfried Taloss
The herds are close. We can take what we need, pack the rest, and be back before the trail loses its freshness.
They move quietly through the tall grass, choosing a healthy cow apart from the herd. Marcus studies the wind, while Siegfried prepares a clean, efficient hunt.

Marcus Rhen
Stay alert while we gather the rations. The mountains can wait a little longer, but we should not waste the daylight.
“I pull out my bow and aim a shot at the healthy cow, my years of training in the countryside kicking back in. I give silent signals to Marcus and Siegfried to surround the cow when I loose my arrow.”
SUCCESS (Fair Ranged Combat, rolled +1)

Issac draws his bow and lowers into the tall grass. Years of countryside training steady his breathing as he silently signals Marcus and Siegfried to circle the chosen cow.

Marcus Rhen
Understood. I will take the far side.

Siegfried Taloss
Quietly, then. We need the herd calm.
Marcus and Siegfried spread through the grass, using the wind and the herd’s movement for cover. The healthy cow remains apart, unaware of the tightening circle.
Issac looses. The arrow strikes cleanly, and the cow drops beyond the herd’s immediate notice. The remaining animals shift away without panic.

Marcus Rhen
A clean shot. That gives us enough meat for the pass.

Siegfried Taloss
Good work, Issac. Help me pack it, and we will return before the trail changes.

“I pull out a hunting knife and with Siegfried's help, are able to dice the cow into eatable steak bites. I make a hand gesture signaling salt or herbs to better preserve the meat. I point to a bush of edible Sycamore leaves for Marcus to get”
SUCCESS (Superb Survival, rolled +0)

Siegfried lends Issac a sturdy hunting knife from his field kit. Together they work beside the grass, turning the cow into neatly portioned steak bites for the mountain journey.

Siegfried Taloss
Keep the cuts small and even. They will pack better, and we can cook them quickly when the pass grows cold.
The work succeeds, though the knife slips against a tough joint and scrapes Issac’s knuckles. He rinses the shallow mark with water before continuing.
When the meat is portioned, Issac gestures for salt or herbs, then points toward a nearby bush of broad edible sycamore leaves.

Marcus Rhen
I see it. I will gather the leaves, and Siegfried can find salt among the packs.
Marcus collects the cleanest leaves while Siegfried seasons the portions. The improvised wrapping and salt give the rations a better chance of lasting through the pass.

Siegfried Taloss
There. Enough food for the three of us, and some for Lillia and Mikka. Let us get back before the trail changes.

“As we gather the rations, Marcus compliments me on my hunting skills, with Siegfried even saying that I was like a completely different person. I simply nodded.”
With the rations wrapped and secured, the three gather their packs in the tall grass. Issac’s careful shot has left the work orderly and the provisions plentiful.

Marcus Rhen
That was excellent hunting, Issac. You read the wind, placed yourself well, and made the shot before the herd could scatter.
Issac listens without speaking, then gives a simple nod. Marcus accepts the gesture with an approving smile and lifts the wrapped meat.

Siegfried Taloss
You were like a completely different person out there. Quiet as ever, but steady, focused, and confident when it mattered.
Siegfried secures the last portion among the packs, his praise carrying no teasing edge. Marcus checks the bindings while the morning wind moves through the grass.

Marcus Rhen
Come on. Lillia and Mikka will be waiting by the mountain entrance. We should return while the trail remains clear.
Issac, Marcus, and Siegfried start back toward the distant marker, carrying enough food for the party’s journey into the pass.
Director's note
Diomede Mares are agressive Plains monsters warped to agression by the Blight
“As we make our leave, however, I sense a slowly aproaching rumbling. I turned around and spotted three Diomede Mares charging at us The three of us prepare for battle: Marcus unsheathes his sword, I pull out my Bo Staff, and Siegfried lifts his fists in a boxer stance”
SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled -3)

As Issac, Marcus, and Siegfried turn from the fields, a slow rumble rolls beneath the grass. Issac catches movement on the rise and stops the group.
Three Diomede Mares charge across the plain, broad-chested and ash-coated, their pale manes streaming and their eyes burning with unnatural aggression. Dust boils beneath their hooves.

Marcus Rhen
Mares! They are coming straight for us. Hold your ground, but do not let them surround anyone.
Marcus unsheathes his sword and angles toward the lead beast. Siegfried raises both fists into a disciplined boxer’s stance, planting himself beside the ration packs.
Issac draws his Bo Staff and braces with the others. The rumble has given them time to prepare, but dust and distance obscure which mare is leading the charge.

Siegfried Taloss
Stay sharp! Watch their shoulders, not their heads. The first turn will tell us where they mean to break through.

Marcus Rhen
Issac, keep to my left. Siegfried, protect the packs. We meet them together.
“(Each of us takes on a single Mare) I drive back the nearest mare, my combat shaky but firm like stone, as I unknowingly call upon my divine blessing (Issac's Divine Blessing is Fortitude, the ability to hold your ground against any charge, and nullifies any intimidation from enemies and monsters alike, making Issac a impenetrable wall)”
Missed — nearest mare struck back for 2 damage

The three adventurers split across the plain, each drawing one charging mare away from the others. Dust stings Issac’s eyes as the nearest beast bears down on him.
Issac plants his Bo Staff and meets the mare’s rush. His stance wavers under the impact, but something within him holds firm, turning him into an immovable barrier.
The mare recoils a step without injury, its ash-coated body still tense and aggressive. Issac’s staff has not harmed it, but neither has its charge driven him from the ground.
The force jars Issac’s shoulder and leaves his breath tight. He remains upright, bruised and shaken, while a faint warmth passes through his limbs before fading.

Marcus Rhen
Good! Keep it facing you, Issac. Do not give it room to turn toward the packs.
Marcus holds the second mare at the edge of the dust cloud, sword ready but measured. Siegfried squares himself against the third, guarding the wrapped rations.

Siegfried Taloss
You held that charge! Stay steady, Issac. We have each one contained for now.
“The impact of the recent hit, while hurting, actually strengthened my resolve, (Sacrifice 2 willpower stat to restore two health) (Fortitude is tied to willpower) I feel unnatual strength rise in me as I attack the mare again”
Hit for 1 damage — Nearest Diomede Mare struck back for 1 damage

The mare’s charge leaves Issac bruised and breathless, but pain gives way to a fierce steadiness. His will hardens, and unnatural strength rises through his arms.

Issac Rivendohr
The pain is still there, but my body is answering it.
Issac sacrifices part of his resolve to force his battered body onward. Warmth floods his limbs as he steps into the mare’s reach once more.
He swings the Bo Staff with renewed force. The blow lands against the mare’s ash-coated flank, making it stagger and toss its pale mane in anger.
The Diomede Mare is hurt, but it snaps forward in retaliation. Its shoulder catches Issac and drives him back, worsening his injuries without taking him from the fight.

Marcus Rhen
That struck it! Keep your footing, Issac. It is hurt now, so do not let it break past you.

Siegfried Taloss
Good! Breathe and hold steady. Your strength is enough, but make every movement count.
“I sidestep and let the mare charge past, and it unintentionally stumbles and hits its head on a nearby rock.”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -1)

Issac shifts sideways at the last instant, boots grinding through dust as the Diomede Mare commits to its charge. Its shoulder misses him by inches.
The mare surges past, loses its footing on the uneven ground, and stumbles into a low rock. Its head strikes the stone, and it reels away, dazed and disoriented.
Issac’s escape costs him dearly. His trailing foot twists beneath him, and he drops to one knee, pain flashing through his ankle as dust coats his hands.

Marcus Rhen
Well moved! Stay down for a breath, Issac. The beast is stunned, but it may recover quickly.
The injured mare shakes its pale mane and paws unsteadily at the earth. Marcus keeps his sword between it and Issac without rushing forward.

Siegfried Taloss
You made it miss, but that landing looked rough. Can you stand, or should I draw it farther away?
Across the field, the other two mares remain engaged with Marcus and Siegfried. For this instant, Issac has space to recover his footing while the dazed beast struggles to orient itself.
