The Missing Oath Witness
the tower keeper
The Tower Keeper

Issac climbs from the lower oath chamber with his father's awakened sword still in hand. Its pale runes dim as he crosses the first landing, while the tower keeper waits beyond the forbidden mark.

The Tower Keeper

The Tower Keeper

You returned carrying the blade, but not its answer. That is wiser than pretending the oath is clear.

In the upper chamber, dust hangs thick beneath the broken roof. The keeper pries loose a warped floorboard and draws out a leather travel ledger wrapped in oilcloth.

A damaged oath register lies beneath it, its pages browned and brittle. Several entries survive: Macedoriak, the sealed archive, and a date twelve years past.

The Tower Keeper

The Tower Keeper

Your father signed this register before he vanished. The ledger names his companions, but one page has been cut away.

The keeper spreads both records across a stone table. Beside the Macedoriak entry, a faint notation mentions a witness who was never recorded in the official account.

The Tower Keeper

Read what remains. You may learn why he broke his oath before the road demands that you judge him.

“I read every surviving entry in both records, surprised by by Father abandoning an oath”

FAILURE (Fair Reasoning, rolled -3)

Issac bends over the stone table and reads every legible line while the tower keeper keeps both records spread beneath the gray daylight.

The ledger lists three companions, a route through Macedoriak, and repeated references to a sealed archive. The register confirms his father’s oath and its abandonment.

Issac Rivendohr

The date matches the night he vanished.

When Issac reaches the damaged entries, the sword’s pale runes flare. Ink lifts from the brittle pages in thin black threads, twisting into unreadable stains.

The Tower Keeper

The Tower Keeper

Step back. The blade is answering the records, and it is destroying what remains.

The keeper snatches the leather ledger away, but the register’s cut edge crumbles across the table. Only scattered words survive: blood, witness, beneath.

The Tower Keeper

The Tower Keeper

You read enough to know the oath was not abandoned alone. The missing page now matters more than every surviving entry.

What do you know about the missing witness?

The keeper’s hand stops above the scattered words. For the first time, her guarded expression breaks, and she folds the damaged register shut.

The Tower Keeper

The Tower Keeper

I know the witness was real. I know your father trusted them enough to leave the archive route in their keeping.

The Tower Keeper

The Tower Keeper

I do not know their name. Your father erased it before he signed the register, and I honored that silence.

She turns the register over. A shallow indentation scars its leather cover, shaped like a signet pressed hard enough to split the binding.

The Tower Keeper

The Tower Keeper

The missing page was not cut away by a thief. Your father removed it himself, then sealed the witness’s mark beneath this cover.

The sword’s pale runes flicker toward the hidden indentation. The keeper withdraws the ledger beyond its glow, leaving the sealed mark untouched and the witness unnamed.

Get the tower keeper to disclose what he knows about the missing witness

“I study the signet-shaped indentation for a hidden impression. Something about the indent seems familiar”

SUCCESS (Mediocre Perception, rolled +1)

The Missing Oath Witness

The Tower Keeper

Issac studies the signet-shaped indentation without touching the sword to it. The split leather preserves a faint inner ridge, hidden beneath the cover’s scarred surface.

Issac Rivendohr

Issac Rivendohr

The impression has the same broken crescent as the signet cord.

He angles the ledger toward the gray daylight and traces the binding’s edge with one careful fingertip. A second mark emerges inside the first: three narrow lines crossing the crescent.

The Tower Keeper

The Tower Keeper

That is not your father’s seal. I have seen its pattern once, carved beneath the northern archive gate.

The keeper brings the register closer, her guarded posture tightening. When the sword’s pale runes answer the hidden impression, the scattered ink settles into a readable fragment.

The Tower Keeper

The Tower Keeper

The witness carried an archive key, not merely a name. Your father erased the mark because someone was hunting whoever bore it.

Between the surviving words, a fresh line darkens across the page: beneath Macedoriak, seek the door without a shadow. The keeper looks toward the rain-filled doorway.

“Is the missing witness still alive?”

NO, BUT (Likely, rolled 70)

The Missing Oath Witness

The Tower Keeper

The fresh line shivers beneath the keeper’s hand. The ink bleeds outward, forming a second mark: a small circle split cleanly through its center.

The Tower Keeper

The Tower Keeper

The witness is dead. This mark is a mourning seal, used when an archive bearer cannot return to claim their key.

The sword’s pale runes fade, but the three crossing lines remain bright on the leather. Beneath them, a narrow route appears, descending from Macedoriak’s eastern wall.

The Tower Keeper

The Tower Keeper

Your father did not erase the key. He hid its path. The witness died before reaching the archive, but the key was left behind.

A final fragment rises from the register’s fibers: ash bridge, seventh stone, at moonless tide. The words settle beside the route and stop changing.

The Tower Keeper

The Tower Keeper

There is your consolation, Rivendohr. The door without a shadow is not the archive entrance. It is the way to the witness’s last safeguard.

Rain thickens beyond the broken roof, drumming over the tower stones. The hidden route points toward Macedoriak, while the ledger waits open beneath the sword’s dim glow.

Director's note

Director's note

make my way to the Ash bridge

“I piece together that yes, the witness is dead, but whoever was chasing them had failed to find the key. I and”

SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +0)

The Missing Oath Witness

Issac compares the mourning seal, the abandoned route, and the hidden key-mark. The witness is dead, but the pursuer searched the wrong place and left the safeguard undiscovered.

As he presses the register flat, brittle leather splits beneath his palm. A sharp edge cuts his finger, and one bright drop darkens the page beside the words ash bridge.

Issac Rivendohr

Issac Rivendohr

Thank you. I will find the witness’s safeguard at the Ash bridge.

The Tower Keeper

Then keep the sword covered until you reach the seventh stone. Whoever hunted the witness may still watch the road.

The keeper wraps the register in oilcloth and returns it to Issac. Rain lashes the tower stairs as he secures the awakened sword beneath his cloak.

He leaves the ruined watchtower and follows the eastern road toward Macedoriak, where stormwater runs in silver channels between dark stones.

By moonless tide, the Ash bridge rises ahead through the rain, its old stones black with soot and its seventh span disappearing into mist.

Oath Register

Director's note

The Seventh stone holds a riddle that Issac knows intimately

“I count to the seventh span and search its soot-black stones.”

FAILURE (Mediocre Perception, rolled -2)

The Missing Oath Witness

Issac counts the bridge’s spans through rain and mist. At the seventh, soot-black stones crowd beneath the broken parapet, slick and cold beneath his searching hands.

Issac Rivendohr

Issac Rivendohr

The seventh stone holds the old riddle. I know every line of it.

He follows familiar grooves beneath the soot, but the rain washes his first markings away. The stone gives no seam, and the safeguard remains hidden.

When his palm presses the center of the span, the sword beneath his cloak answers with a muted warmth. Soot loosens in a narrow crescent around his fingers.

The crescent reveals not a door, but a line of pale lettering cut upside down beneath the ledge. Water fills the grooves, making the riddle readable only from below.

A loose foundation stone shifts under his weight and drops into the river, exposing a cramped gap beneath the bridge. Inside, a dry iron ring waits beside the first half of the riddle.

The seventh span has yielded no safeguard directly, but the hidden ring offers a new way forward. The bridge groans softly around him as the rain deepens.

Director's note

The riddle holds lines from a lullaby that Issac's mom sung to him every night; that particular verse is the answer

“I descend beneath the bridge to inspect the riddle.”

SUCCESS (Mediocre Perception, rolled +0)

The Missing Oath Witness

Issac lowers himself through the cramped gap beneath the seventh span, bracing against wet stone as the river rushes beneath the bridge.

His shoulder catches the foundation, tearing more of his sleeve, but he reaches the dry iron ring and pulls himself beneath the ledge.

Issac Rivendohr

Issac Rivendohr

The hidden letters are the lullaby verse Mother sang every night.

Viewed from below, the upside-down riddle resolves into the familiar lines, each phrase matching the particular verse that always ended the song.

The final line is the answer. As Issac traces it, the ring gives a dull click, and a concealed seam appears around a fist-sized stone panel.

The bridge groans sharply above him, dislodging grit into the river. The noise rolls through the mist, but the riddle is fully understood and the panel stands ready.

Director's note

The key inside is the form of a seal of the royal family

Director's note

The bridge does not give way

“I open the concealed stone panel.”

SUCCESS (Fair Strength, rolled -1)

The Missing Oath Witness

Issac grips the iron ring and pulls while pressing the riddle’s final line. The concealed stone panel releases with a grinding click, opening inward beneath the bridge.

The movement jars loose grit from the arch. Stones strike the river below with sharp splashes, and a fresh scrape opens across Issac’s knuckles.

Beyond the panel, a narrow dry niche waits in the foundation, protected from the rain. A small iron key rests on folded, time-darkened cloth.

The key is shaped as a royal seal: a crowned sun pressed above three rising lines, its edges silver despite the years beneath the Ash bridge.

Issac Rivendohr

Issac Rivendohr

The seal belongs to Macedoriak’s royal family.

When Issac lifts it, the cloth collapses into ash around his fingers. Beneath it, a slate bears the same mark and a route scratched toward the eastern wall.

Rain continues beyond the opened niche, while the bridge holds firm overhead. The royal seal lies secured in Issac’s hand, and the hidden route waits to be followed.
