The trail leaves the wreckage and climbs beneath dark pines, marked by drops of blood and snapped branches. Laurel and the Lookout follow Starlight into rising stone.

The Rocky corridors close around them, narrow passages of weathered stone where smoke gives way to cold wind. Loose gravel shifts beneath every careful step.

Laurel

Laurel

The blood is fresh, but not all of it belongs to the same trail. BamRock is dragging the wounded or forcing them onward.

The Lookout

The Lookout

Voices ahead. More than three, perhaps five. They are trying to sound louder than they are.

A distant ogre command rolls through the stone, followed by heavy scraping and the thump of weapons braced against rock. The echo makes the bend seem nearer.

Laurel

Laurel

He has stopped at a defensible turn. If we rush in, we give him the ground he chose.

Ahead, the passage bends around a jagged outcrop. Beyond it, BamRock gathers his surviving raiders, while the three defenders remain concealed among the broken stones, waiting on Starlight’s next move.

✓ Quest Accepted

Defeat BamRock and his raiding party

The traveler is subjected to an ambush attempt by the raiding party.

“Bamrock is preparing an ambush. We are outnumbered, and they hold favored ground. Let's try and find a route that will take us around unnoticed”

FAILURE (Good Stealth, rolled +1)

The Lookout

Starlight studies the broken stones instead of the defended bend. A narrow shelf climbs along the corridor wall, screened by pine roots and shadow, offering a possible way around.

Starlight Clearbottom

The shelf is passable, but the loose gravel will betray anyone who crosses it.

She leads Laurel and the Lookout back a few paces, then guides them onto the shelf one careful step at a time. Their bows and cloaks brush the stone.

A pebble slips beneath the Lookout’s boot and skips into the ravine. The sound cracks through the corridor, followed by a sudden hush from beyond the outcrop.

BamRock the Ogre Chieftain

There! They crawl along the wall. Drive them from the high ground!

The ambush springs below, but the defenders are already above its chosen turn. Ogres surge into view, forcing the trio to halt and abandon silence.

Behind a curtain of roots, the shelf forks upward into a tighter goat path overlooking BamRock’s rear. It is narrow, but it offers a route to strike from behind instead of repeating the failed crossing.

“Quickly head for the goat path, if we make it we gain advantage from the rear”

Starlight turns into the tighter goat path at once, moving swiftly beneath the pine roots. Laurel and the Lookout follow, boots finding the firmest stone.

The raiding party’s ambush breaks below. Ogres surge around the outcrop, hurling stones and shouting into the passage, but their attack strikes only empty shelf and echo.

Laurel

Laurel

They have committed to the lower turn. Keep climbing, Starlight. We can take their rear.

The goat path curls above the corridor and opens behind BamRock’s chosen position. From the ledge, his broad back and clustered raiders stand exposed between the rocks.

The Lookout

The Lookout

We made it around them. They do not know where we are.

Search the wall! Find them before they loose their arrows!

Starlight settles behind a screen of roots with the advantage secured. Below, the ogres face the wrong direction, while Laurel and the Lookout ready their bows beside her.

“Staying hidden, starlight scans the area taking mental notes of all the raiders positions”

Starlight stays low behind the roots and studies the ledge below. BamRock stands near the center turn, while his raiders spread through the broken stone around him.

She marks one ogre guarding the lower approach, another crouched beside a boulder, and two more searching the wall. The corridor’s echoes distort their exact spacing.

When she leans for a clearer angle, a pine root presses against her wrapped fingers. It shifts with a dry scrape, and gravel trickles down the slope.

BamRock the Ogre Chieftain

Hold! They are above us. Watch the high path!

The raiders turn toward the ledge, spoiling Starlight’s careful survey. Their bodies overlap among the rocks, and the full formation remains hidden from her sight.

Yet the movement reveals a narrow gap behind the boulder guard, leading toward BamRock’s exposed flank. Laurel catches it too, her bow already angling toward the opening.

“No time left, we must act now. Starlight slips down the narrow path and lets fly an arrow towards Bamrock”

SUCCESS (Superb Ranged Weapons, rolled -1)

Starlight slips from the roots onto the narrow path, placing each boot on firm stone as the raiders turn toward the ledge. Laurel and the Lookout hold their bows behind her.

The gap behind the boulder opens just long enough. Starlight draws through the scrape of shifting gravel, her wrapped fingers steady despite the tight angle.

Her arrow flies down the corridor and strikes BamRock high in the exposed shoulder. The ogre chieftain reels, his raised cudgel slamming against the stone.

Argh! Find the archer! Break that ledge!

The raiders scatter beneath the sudden command, several turning toward the wrong wall. BamRock drops to one knee, clutching the shaft while his formation buckles around him.

Laurel

Laurel

Good shot. Their center is open. Keep them looking up.

The Lookout

The Lookout

BamRock is hurt! They are losing the turn!

“Command the lookout to gaurd there backs as starlight and laurel volley another round of arrows at Bamrock”

Guard our backs. Laurel and I will volley BamRock.

The Lookout

The Lookout

I have the rear. No raider reaches this ledge unseen.

The Lookout turns from the exposed flank, bow sweeping across the narrow path. Below, Laurel rises beside Starlight, both drawing as BamRock struggles upright.

Two arrows descend together through the cold corridor air. Starlight’s shaft strikes BamRock’s upper arm, while Laurel’s bites into his thigh and drives him back against the stone.

BamRock the Ogre Chieftain

BamRock the Ogre Chieftain

Hold the turn! Do not let them bring me down!

His cudgel scrapes uselessly across the rock as his knee buckles. The nearest raiders abandon their search and crowd around him, exposing the lower passage.

The Lookout

The Lookout

Our backs are clear. BamRock cannot command the corridor from there.

“If we kill Bamrock, his tribe will lose will. And flee. All three companions take aim for Bamrock once more”

SUCCESS (Superb Ranged Weapons, rolled +0)

Starlight raises her longbow again, the wrapped fingers settling against the string. Laurel matches her from the ledge, while the Lookout covers the rear without lowering their aim.

Three drawn bows converge on BamRock. He struggles upright beneath the rock face, one hand clamped around his cudgel as his raiders crowd uncertainly around him.

Laurel

Laurel

I have his center. Wait for the same breath.

The corridor tightens around the silence. Cold wind threads through the pines, stirring bowstrings and carrying the ogres’ ragged breathing up the stone.

BamRock the Ogre Chieftain

BamRock the Ogre Chieftain

You think three arrows can break BamRock? Stand and face me!

His challenge falters when he sees every aim fixed upon him. The nearest raiders glance between their chieftain and the open lower passage, their formation losing its certainty.

The Lookout

The Lookout

Rear remains clear. On your mark, Starlight.

“Fire your arrows”

Starlight releases first. Her arrow cuts through the cold corridor air and drives into BamRock’s chest, forcing BamRock the Ogre Chieftain hard against the rock face.

Laurel’s shaft follows in the same breath, striking his shoulder. The cudgel slips from BamRock’s hand and crashes among the stones.

The Lookout fires past the clustered raiders, pinning the lower approach and sealing the retreat. BamRock sinks to one knee, unable to rally his formation.

BamRock the Ogre Chieftain

BamRock the Ogre Chieftain

No! Hold your ground! I am BamRock!

His command breaks apart beneath the ringing echoes. One raider backs toward the lower passage, while another drops his weapon and raises both hands.

Laurel

Laurel

He cannot command now. Keep your aim steady, Starlight.

The Lookout

The Lookout

The turn is ours. They have nowhere safe to run.

“Starlight notices a large boulder perched high above Bamrocks head. Held Barely by a broken tree branch. She aims for the branch and shoots releasing the boulder onto bamrock below”

FAILURE (Superb Ranged Weapons, rolled -4)

Above BamRock, Starlight spots a great boulder balanced on the slope, held by a splintered pine branch. Its weight hangs directly over the kneeling chieftain.

She raises her longbow and draws on the branch instead of the ogre. The narrow target trembles in the wind, half-hidden behind roots and stone.

The arrow strikes the branch, but not at its weakest point. Wood snaps, and the boulder lurches free, scraping sideways rather than dropping straight down.

BamRock the Ogre Chieftain

BamRock the Ogre Chieftain

Move! Move, you fools!

The boulder thunders across the ledge, smashing into the rock beside BamRock and throwing dust through the turn. He rolls clear as the stone crashes into the lower passage.

The fallen boulder seals the retreat and splits the raiders from their chieftain. BamRock staggers behind the new barrier, while his remaining followers face the three raised bows.

Laurel

Laurel

Not the strike you wanted, perhaps, but the corridor is ours. They cannot reach him, and they cannot reach the road.
