Caelan emerges from the kitchen shadows, his broken gold torque clenched in one hand. Flour dust whitens his torn finery as he scans the ovens and shadowed walls.

Caelan

Caelan

There. Behind the third oven. That stone service door is hidden beneath the old kitchens. It leads toward an aqueduct exit.

A narrow seam cuts the soot-dark masonry behind the cold oven. No handle shows, only a shallow depression shaped like a broken crown.

Open the stairhead! Search every corner below!

Fists and armored shoulders hammer the stairhead below. Dust sifts from the ceiling, and Caelan’s urgency hardens as the hidden door remains silent.

Caelan

Caelan

Trust it or do not, masked one, but the guards will make the choice for us. My father used that aqueduct before the palace forgot it existed.

The stair door shudders under another blow. Caelan sets his fingers into the crown-shaped hollow, waiting for Thir’s judgment beside the ovens.

Thir the masked leaves Steep stair beneath the palace kitchens behind and arrives at aqueduct.

“Get into the aqueduct as quickly and quietly as possible”

The aqueduct receives Thir and Caelan in a vaulted tunnel of black stone. Knee-deep water rushes toward the city, carrying candle grease, leaves, and the palace’s fading dust.

Thir moves without a splash, guiding Caelan along a narrow maintenance ledge beneath the arches. Behind them, the hidden service door settles shut, leaving the guards pounding at empty masonry.

The current bends west beneath the old walls. Follow it, and we will leave the palace unseen.

A pale gleam interrupts the darkness ahead. Set into the aqueduct wall is a bronze floodgate marked with a broken crown, its side passage dry and wide enough for two travelers.

Caelan

Caelan

That gate was my family’s private road. The aqueduct does not merely escape the palace. It reaches the river vaults beneath Veyr.

The floodgate stands unbarred. Beyond it, old steps climb toward a faint dawn-colored glow, while the rushing water conceals every sound of their passage.

Thir kneels on the dry ledge beside the floodgate and bows his masked head. The river’s thunder muffles the prayer, while a faint warmth gathers beneath his ribs in answer.

Algethor’s favor settles over him like unseen armor, steadying his breath and sharpening the darkness around him. The gift answers, ready to hide him again when the prayer’s strength is renewed by true rest.

Caelan

Caelan

I will not interrupt a god’s hearing. But the river vaults may hold more than an escape, and dawn will not wait for either of us.

The prayer leaves Thir’s composure worn thin. For one measured breath his hand remains still on the sword hilt, a hesitation Caelan notices before Thir rises.

Caelan

Caelan

The vaults are below the river district. If my father’s road remains clear, we can reach loyal ground before the palace learns where I went.

Thir steps through the bronze floodgate. Caelan follows close behind, and together they climb the old stairs toward the dawn-colored glow as the current hides their departure.

The passage opens into a vaulted river chamber beneath Veyr. Ancient stone balconies circle the darkness, and pale daylight spills through a cracked grate above, revealing fresh boot marks in the dust.

A deep boom rolls through the river chamber. Dust pours from the cracked grate, and the water below surges backward, exposing black steps descending beneath the vault.

Caelan

Caelan

That is no river tremor. The old vaults are opening, and someone has stirred the road beneath them.

Boot marks cross the dust toward the newly exposed steps, fresher than the trail from the floodgate. Above, armored silhouettes gather behind the cracked grate as palace guards peer down into the chamber.

Prince Caelan! Stand aside from the masked criminal and surrender peacefully!

Caelan

Caelan

They found us too quickly. The lower road is our only chance, unless the vault has become another trap.

A pale hand rises from the darkness below the steps, gripping a bronze key shaped like a broken crown. It releases the key onto the stone, then vanishes beneath the rushing water.

Caelan

Caelan

My father sealed that key with the royal road. Whatever waits below has chosen to show it to us.

The guards begin forcing their way through the grate above. The bronze key rolls to a stop between Thir and the descending steps, gleaming in the vault’s cold light.

Thir surges across the wet stone as the guards force through the grate above. Their shouted recognition marks him as a wanted criminal, drawing every spear toward his path and narrowing his escape.

He drops to one knee, slides beneath a falling shard of masonry, and catches the bronze key before it can tumble into the rushing water. His fingers close around its broken-crown teeth.

Caelan

Caelan

The key is yours. The lower road answers only to the hand that carries it.

Thir reaches the first black step with the key secured in his fist. Caelan follows hard behind, while torchlight spills through the broken grate and guards descend into the chamber.

Stop, masked criminal! By order of the palace, surrender the prince!

The bronze key warms against Thir’s palm. Ahead, the submerged darkness parts around a narrow stair, and a massive lock appears beneath the waterline, shaped for the broken crown.

Caelan

Caelan

There. Put it in the lock, and my father’s road will open before they reach us.

Thir reaches the lock and holds the bronze key above its waiting socket, with Caelan beside him and the guards’ boots striking the upper steps.

Thir eases the bronze crown key into the submerged lock, turning it with patient, thief’s precision. Its warmth guides the teeth through hidden wards, but the guards’ shouted order fixes every spear on his back and robs the moment of silence.

The key turns halfway. Bronze plates shift with a deep click, and a narrow seam opens beside the massive lock, spilling a dry breath that smells of old dust and river stone.

Then the mechanism catches. The broken crown teeth refuse the final turn, and the royal road remains sealed beneath the black water. The key has not opened the gate, but it has cracked a smaller way through.

Caelan

Caelan

The main lock needs the whole crown, not merely its key. But that seam is a servant’s passage. It leads beneath the river vaults.

Above, Palace Guards descend another step, their torchlight trembling across the water. The narrow seam widens by a finger’s breadth, just enough to promise passage sideways.

Caelan

Caelan

Leave the royal road. Take the servant’s passage, and we may reach its inner release before they corner us here.
