The gates of High Point thunder shut behind Brandon Dubois as he drives the royal mount into the frost-bright road. The king’s seal is clenched in his hand, a hard promise against the winter dark.
Valerius comes up beside him for only a moment, snow whipping past their cloak. Ahead lies the border shrine, and beyond it the handoff that could drown the realm in lies if Brandon is too late.

Valerius
Take the north line. Fastest way. If the west wall cell moves now, the shrine is the only place that can stop them.

Brandon Dubois
Then I ride for the shrine.
Hooves strike frozen ruts as the city falls away behind him. To his right, black pines blur into a wall of shadow. To his left, the stone of High Point dwindles into mist and distance.

Valerius
And if the cell reaches Captain Sereth first, the warning dies with him. Brandon, that seal is your proof. Guard it like your life.
Brandon lowers his head into the wind, riding hard toward the shrine and the truth it must carry.
