Brandon turns from the hearth and shifts the hidden scroll beneath his cloak, aiming for the door and the road beyond. The wake-house answers with a hard slam of timber and frost as three cloaked figures step in, their boots whitening the floor.

The First Iskan Spy

The First Iskan Spy

Hold. We seek a man carrying sealed words for High Point.

The Second Iskan Spy

The Second Iskan Spy

Search the room. The knight cannot be far.

The Lantern Keeper shrinks back into shadow. The Mentor's Wife goes pale, one hand tight on her shawl, the other braced near the bench as the cold spills deeper into the room.

Brandon Dubois

Brandon Dubois

They know the scroll is here.

Mara

Mara

If you came for grief, you are late. If you came for treason, you are in the wrong house.

The third spy does not answer. He keeps his gaze fixed on Brandon’s cloak, one hand sliding from stillness to the hilt at his hip, while the others fan out to cut off the door. The route to High Point is suddenly clear, and dangerous.

I draw my sword on the spies, attempting to keep their attention on me and not the others. I then taunt them saying “If you want it, come and claim it!”

Brandon’s sword clears leather with a bright ring, the blade coming up between the spies and the hearth. The nearest two flinch and reorient toward him, their shoulders turning away from Mara and the Mentor’s Wife.

Brandon Dubois

If you want it, come and claim it!

The First Iskan Spy

The First Iskan Spy

There he is. Hold him, and take the cloak if he falls.

The Second Iskan Spy

The Second Iskan Spy

Keep your eyes on the knight. Let the others scatter.

The third spy shifts a step nearer Brandon, hilt half drawn, while the first two settle into a tight front. Mara stays planted by the benches, and the Mentor’s Wife pulls back from the fire, both now outside the spies’ immediate reach.

Mara

Mara

Then look at him. Not at them.

Snow skims in over the threshold, hissing against the floorboards. The spies’ attention locks on Brandon’s raised blade, and the room narrows to steel, breath, and the open door.

I hold the spies at swordpoint, sizing up and determining which one will attack first.

Brandon keeps the blade still and studies the three men through the open space of the room. The first spy’s weight settles forward first, all impatience and hunger. The second stays back, guarding the flank. The third keeps his hand half-drawn, waiting for the others to buy him an opening.

Brandon Dubois

Brandon Dubois

The third one is waiting to strike after the first move.

His eyes catch a flash at the third spy’s wrist, a cord looped beneath his sleeve, the kind used for a quick signal or a hidden tug. Brandon has his answer before anyone else in the room speaks it.

The First Iskan Spy

The First Iskan Spy

He’s reading us. Move!

The first spy lunges a half-step, and the second shifts with him, just as Brandon expects, while the third stays poised behind their shoulders. Mara stiffens by the benches, and the Mentor’s Wife clutches her shawl tighter at the hearth.

Mara

Mara

Brandon, the one in back is signaling them!

Snow gusts harder through the open door, whitening the threshold. Brandon now knows where the first blow will come from, and the room holds its breath around his sword.

I strike the first spy before he moves, dashing forward to catch him off guard as I lunge my sword toward his chest.

Brandon commits to the opening the spies leave him. His sword flashes forward in a clean, driving lunge, and the first man jerks too late, the point forcing him back on his heels before he can spring.

The spy’s guard breaks with the impact. He stumbles into the spilled snow at the threshold, one hand flying to his chest, his rush shattered before it begins.

The second spy recoils a step, sudden caution replacing his measured stance. The third’s hidden cord twitches once at his wrist, then stills as he recalculates under Brandon’s blade.

Mara

Mara

He’s got the first one! Keep them pinned!

The Mentor's Wife

The Mentor's Wife

Brandon, hold them there, do not let them close!

Snow skates across the floor in a white sheet from the open door, and the fallen spy glares up through it, breath ragged, while the room tightens around the sharp edge of Brandon’s thrust.

The First Iskan Spy

The First Iskan Spy

He struck early, get around him!

I press the attack on the second spy, launching a heavy swing downward onto him.

Brandon answers the second spy’s caution with force, stepping in before the ring can tighten. His sword comes down in a hard arc, driving the man off balance and forcing him to guard high instead of closing the gap.

Steel rings through the wake-house. The second spy drops to one knee on the snow-dusted floor, his cloak skewed open, and Brandon’s blow knocks his footing wide enough to expose the wrist cord at his sleeve.

The Second Iskan Spy

The Second Iskan Spy

He’s too strong, back off!

The third spy flinches at the shouted warning, blade half-raised, his attention splitting between Brandon and the threshold.

Mara

Mara

Now, Brandon, keep driving them back!

Snow sweeps deeper over the floor in a white ribbon, but the opening holds. The second spy is down in front of Brandon, and the others hesitate, staring at the space he has carved open.

I drive the third spy back, but this one was prepared as he blocked my attack. As our blades clashed sparks emitted from the metal as we both glared at each other.

Brandon cuts in again, this time at the third spy. The man is ready for it, but Brandon meets the blade head-on and drives him backward with the force of the clash.

Sparks jump from the crossing steel. The third spy gives ground in short, scraping steps, his shoulders tightening as Brandon keeps pressure on the lock.

The Third Iskan Spy

The Third Iskan Spy

Hold him, then, hold him!

The second spy stays on one knee, startled by the shove of the fight now moving past him. Mara leans in from the side, eyes fixed on the opening Brandon has forced.

Mara

Mara

That’s it, Brandon, press him back!

The third spy’s heel hits the drifted snow near the threshold, and he slips farther from the center of the room. For a heartbeat, the line between the open door and Brandon’s sword is all that stands between the spies and the scroll.

I press the third spy back, launching a series of quick strikes to keep him off balance. Once I saw an opening I swing my blade at his legs to disable him.

Brandon keeps the third spy moving with a flurry of short, hard cuts, each strike stealing his breath and balance.

The spy’s guard opens under the pressure, and Brandon drops the blade low in a clean sweeping arc.

Steel bites at the spy’s legs, cutting his stance out from under him. He stumbles sideways and crashes to the floor, weapon skidding away.

The Third Iskan Spy

The Third Iskan Spy

No, wait, hold, hold, I yield!

The second spy flinches at the cry, still on one knee, while Mara straightens with a sharp intake of relief.

Mara

Mara

He’s open, Brandon, don’t let him rise!

Snow blows deeper across the threshold, and the open door frames the fallen spy, disarmed and trapped at Brandon’s feet.

I order the spies to surrender and leave

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +0)

Brandon Dubois

Brandon Dubois

Drop your weapons and leave this house.

Brandon keeps his sword leveled, voice flat as iron. The fallen spy freezes first, then the kneeling one lowers his head, hands opening in the snowmelt.

The First Iskan Spy

The First Iskan Spy

We are done here. Move away from the door, knight.

He backs toward the threshold without raising his blade, and the third spy scrambles to his knees beside the skidding weapon, no longer reaching for it.

Mara

Mara

They heard you. Hold them to it.

The Mentor's Wife steps into clearer view behind Brandon’s shoulder, her shawl tight around her arms, watching the spies with hard, relieved eyes.

The Mentor's Wife

The Mentor's Wife

Out, then. And let Holden keep its dead in peace.

The spies retreat in a wary line into the blown snow, and as the door gap widens, one of them spits the broken cord from his wrist into the drift. The wake-house falls quiet except for the creak of the door and the hiss of cold air.

Brandon hooks the barred chair into the door latch and shoves it hard. The plank bites into place as the last breath of snow slips through the crack.

He turns from the threshold and scans the room, sword low now, eyes moving from the fallen spy to the shaken faces by the hearth.

Mara

Mara

They are gone. See who stands.

The First Iskan Spy lowers himself fully to the floor, keeping his hands spread. The third spy stays on one knee near the doorway, breathing hard, his dropped blade half-buried in snow.

The Mentor's Wife steps closer, staring past Brandon to the threshold as if counting every bootprint and broken cord.

The Mentor's Wife

The Mentor's Wife

No blood in my house, thank the saints. Are any of you wounded?

Brandon Dubois

Brandon Dubois

The door holds. The room is still.

The Lantern Keeper peers from the side of the room toward the barred entrance, already reaching for a lantern to see the floor more clearly.

The Lantern Keeper

The Lantern Keeper

Check the threshold, knight. If they left a tool, I want it found before morning.

I ask Mara if anyone is wounded

SUCCESS (Fair Diplomacy, rolled +3)

Brandon Dubois

Brandon Dubois

Is anyone wounded?

Mara

Mara

Only bruises and fright, Brandon. The spies are the worst of it.

Mara kneels by the nearest fallen man and lifts his sleeve just enough to check for blood. The First Iskan Spy flinches, then goes still when she finds only a scraped wrist.

The Mentor's Wife

The Mentor's Wife

My hands are steady. I am unharmed, and the room is ours again.

The Lantern Keeper brings the lantern lower, its glow catching the tracked snow, the dropped blade, and the broken wrist cord near the threshold. He nods once, grimly satisfied, as if confirming the count for himself.

The Lantern Keeper

The Lantern Keeper

No one is cut badly. But look here, knight, they left more than footprints.

At the doorway, the third spy lifts his head toward Brandon, wary and breathless. Outside, the wind presses at the barred door, and the room waits for Brandon's next command.

Brandon keeps his sword still and turns the question on the spies. The room hushes, all lantern-light and snow-drift, while the three men trade frightened looks.

Brandon Dubois

Brandon Dubois

Who sent you, and are there others like you hiding in Nordenfell?

The Third Iskan Spy

The Third Iskan Spy

Only one handler in Holden, by the north road. We do not know his face, only the bells he wears.

The First Iskan Spy

The First Iskan Spy

There are cells elsewhere, yes. One in a market town, one near High Point. We were told to wait for signs.

Mara straightens from her kneel, her expression tightening at the mention of High Point. The Lantern Keeper lowers the lamp another finger, as if the shadows themselves might answer.

The Mentor's Wife

The Mentor's Wife

Then the scroll was never meant for one thief alone. They mean to pry open every road to the king.

The third spy swallows hard and nods toward the threshold, where the snow and the broken cord lie together like evidence. Outside, the wind worries the barred door, and the spies wait for Brandon's judgment.

I demand the north-road handler's name

Brandon Dubois

Brandon Dubois

Name the man on the north road.

The kneeling spy flinches. The First Spy cranes up from the floor, listening as if the words might spare him.

The Third Iskan Spy

The Third Iskan Spy

Hadrin. He is called Hadrin Bellwrought, from the north road bells.

The First Iskan Spy

The First Iskan Spy

He meets us after dusk. If the bells sound twice, we scatter. If not, we wait for the next sign.

Mara’s eyes narrow at the name. The Mentor's Wife draws a slow breath, as if the room itself has grown colder.

Outside, the barred door shudders under the wind. The spies stare at Brandon, waiting to see whether the name buys them anything at all.

Is Hadrin Bellwrought in Holden?

NO (Likely, rolled 79)

The Third Iskan Spy shakes his head slowly, his gaze fixed on the floor. He confirms that Hadrin Bellwrought is not in Holden, but has already moved on toward the northern border.

Then tell me his route north.

The Third Iskan Spy swallows hard and whispers the road names through clenched teeth, then the ford beyond them, and the border track Hadrin takes before dawn.

He glances up once, just long enough to see Brandon listening, and his face tightens with fear at what he has given away.

The spy's trembling hand trails blood from a split lip across his collar, a small price from the shove that bought the truth.

Mara

Mara

A clean answer, at last. He goes north by the marsh road, then cuts toward the old border ford.

The barred door rattles under a gust, snow hissings through the seams while the room holds its breath around the new route.

Brandon keeps the spy pinned with his silence, and the man crumples under it. The border track comes out in a rush, a rutted lane past the marsh reeds, then a split by the black stones, then a hunter’s cut that skirts the old ford and stays hidden until the northern road.

The Third Iskan Spy

The Third Iskan Spy

That is the track. He uses it before dawn, when the fog is thickest.

The spy finishes with a sharp gasp, and a smear of blood marks his sleeve as he jerks his hand back. He has answered, but the cost lands in the room at once, a wet cough and a widening stain on the floorboards.

Mara

Mara

Black stones and the ford. So that is where he slips through.

The Lantern Keeper shifts toward the barred door, listening to the wind and the new danger at once. Outside, the storm thumps the wood again, and snow threads deeper through the seams.

Brandon Dubois

Brandon Dubois

The route is fixed now.

The Third Iskan Spy lowers his gaze, breathing hard, while the others in the wake-house stare at Brandon and the fresh road north hanging between them.

I do. The ford track bends north, but the black stones hide it until you are almost on top of them.

She lifts a hand toward the floor, tracing the route in the air with a sharp, exact motion. Brandon gets the answer, but his cloak slips as he turns, and the hidden scroll presses hard against his ribs, making his breath catch.

If that road is truly the one, then the storm has done us no favors.

The keeper’s warning lands over the room while the barred door shudders again. Snow threads deeper through the seams, and the blood on the boards glistens darker in the wavering firelight.
