The riders surge closer through the sand haze, but one horse checks hard at the edge of Morningspank’s reach. Steel glints, hooves skid, and the circle falters just long enough to matter.

The Widow
There. I have their names now.
She lifts the scrap of memory or parchment tight in her fist, furious and focused, eyes locked past the riders as if already seeing the first marked man fall.

Morningspank
The ring is close, but it has not broken yet.
The bandit strains against the tree, pale with fear, while Morningspank holds the front line alone. The Widow does not look back at him. Her target list is now a weapon.

The Bandit
No, wait. I told you what you wanted. Let me go.
A rider at the far right raises his blade and shifts in the saddle, deciding whether to charge or retreat. Morningspank’s wall is buying seconds, and those seconds are turning her vengeance into a path.

Defeat the riders
“I shove the bandit into the path of the riders to create a gap.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -2)

Morningspank drives forward and heaves the bandit out of cover. Sand sprays as the man stumbles into the open, arms pinwheeling toward the riders.
The nearest horse shies hard, and two riders wrench their mounts aside to avoid trampling him. The line splits for a heartbeat.

The Bandit
No, no, I said I would talk!
His shoulder clips a rock and he goes down hard, breath punched from him. The impact leaves a fresh smear of dust on his face and a sharp cry on the wind.

The Widow
Good. Hold them there.
She steps toward the gap with the list clenched tight, fury aimed straight through the opening Morningspank has made.

The rider in the red wrap
Now, cut left! Don't let them through!
“I hold the gap and let the widow through”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -1)

Morningspank plants his boots in the split and widens his stance. The riders commit, then check themselves against his axe and the wall of his armor.
The gap holds. Sand grinds under hooves, but none of the horses dare push through his reach.

The Widow
Now. Move.
She slips past him and into the opening, list in hand, her body low and hard as she crosses the danger.

The rider in the red wrap
After her, before they break clear!
The riders turn with the command, but the moment has bent wrong for them. Their line is split, their path blocked, and the Widow is through.
“I press the riders and break their line”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +2)

Morningspank drives forward with his axe and shoulder, and the split in the riders breaks wider instead of mending. Hooves skid. One horse balks, then another swerves into it, and the line loses its shape.
The red-wrapped rider jerks hard on the reins, but the command comes too late. Their nearest pair are already turning aside from the steel and dust, forced to choose space over speed.
The Widow slips deeper through the opening while the riders bunch and tangle on either side of Morningspank's pressure. The gap becomes a wedge, then a tear.

The rider in the red wrap
Circle! Cut him off!
But the circle is gone. The horses are no longer one ring, only scattered threats fighting dust and distance.
For a beat, the basin itself seems to hold its breath. The Widow gains the far side, and Morningspank stands where the line used to be, with open sand between the riders and their prize.
“I cut toward the red-wrapped rider”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +1)

Morningspank breaks from the gap and cuts hard toward the rider in red, sand spraying from his boots as the axe comes level.

The rider in the red wrap
Get around him, now!
The warning lands, but the nearest horses are already split by distance and panic, not forming fast enough to answer it.
Morningspank closes the last stretch in a single drive, forcing the red-wrapped rider to rein back and turn in the saddle.

The rider in the red wrap
Hold, hold, keep the wedge together!
The order hits only scraps of the broken line. One cluster wheels off, the other stalls under the dust.
The Widow is already beyond them, and the rider in red now has Morningspank in his immediate path, with no clean ring left to hide behind.
“I press the red-wrapped rider hard”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +0)

Morningspank drives in and the red wrap fills his view, the rider forced low in the saddle as the axe and armored shoulder press the horse sideways.

The rider in the red wrap
Back! Back, or he goes under!
The horse skids in the sand, head snapping away from the blow. The rider loses the clean line and clutches at the reins for balance.

The Widow
That one is mine.
Beyond the rider’s shoulder, the Widow slips wider through the opening, her path now clear of the worst of the circle.

The rider in the red wrap
After her, now! Don't let her through!
The broken wedge wavers, but the order has no shape left to catch on. Dust lashes across the gap, and the rider in red is left fighting for room instead of command.
“I press the rider in red harder”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +1)

Morningspank bears down, and the rider in red loses ground in the saddle. The horse lurches sideways under the pressure, cutting off any clean chase path.

The rider in the red wrap
Hold the line, you fools!
The order cracks against the dust. The scattered riders do not close, they hesitate, bunched and broken around the gap.

The Widow
Too late.
The rider in red jerks the reins again, but the mount shies off Morningspank’s shoulder and turns broadside to the basin.

The Bandit
They cannot reach her now.
The Widow keeps moving beyond the worst of them, while the rider in red is left boxed in by dust, fear, and Morningspank’s weight.
The riders’ pursuit stalls, and every eye in the broken ring snaps between Morningspank and the woman slipping free.
“I break away toward the open basin”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

Morningspank breaks from the rider’s reach and drives into the open basin. Dust skates under his boots as the broken ring falls behind him.
The riders do not follow in a clean line. They split around the gap, their horses checking, their advantage gone.

The rider in the red wrap
After him!
The order lands thin and ragged. No one commits fast enough to catch Morningspank before he clears the choke point.

The Widow
He is through.
Ahead, the Widow reaches open ground by the stones, while the rider in red hangs back in the dust, boxed in and exposed.
The basin widens between them, and the riders are left staring across it, forced to choose between pursuit and survival.
