Heat shimmers over the dunes. A lone date palm claws at the sky beside a half-buried ruin, and beneath it a bandit is stretched hard against the trunk, breathing in sharp, frightened bursts.
Morningspank crests the ridge in heavy armor, axe ready. Below, a widow in black stands close enough to make the bandit flinch with every breath.

The Widow
Where is he? I have your names. I have all night if I must.
She taps a dagger under the man’s jaw, and a folded list snaps in the wind from her other hand.

The Bandit
I told you, I do not know! Please, just, just let me go.
The widow’s gaze stays fixed on the prisoner. She does not look up. Far off, a low smear of dust climbs the horizon, growing wider by the second.

Morningspank
The dust is moving fast.
The bandit catches sight of Morningspank and starts to panic harder, twisting against the palm while the widow tightens her stance, still waiting for an answer.
✓ Quest Accepted
Protect the widow from the approaching ambushers
“I charge down the ridge to intercept the approaching dust cloud.”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

Morningspank drops from the ridge and the sand spits under his boots. He hits the slope hard, then drives downhill straight toward the distant dust smear.
The charge reaches him there, at the edge of the basin, where the air is already thick with grit and heat. A loose stone bites his shin and tears a line through the leather at his calf.
From below, the widow finally looks up. Her dagger hand pauses at the bandit’s throat, and her attention flicks past Morningspank to the horizon.

The Widow
How many are coming?
The bandit sees the same moving wall of dust and goes white with terror. He stops fighting the palm and starts nodding too fast to be calm.

The Bandit
More than you can hold. If you want names, you need to move now.
The first shapes break out of the haze, riders or walkers still too far to count. The widow tightens her grip, waiting for Morningspank to choose whether to cover her or press the prisoner.
“I interpose myself between her and the riders”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -1)

Morningspank plants himself between the widow and the ridge line, turning his broad shoulders to the oncoming dust.
The widow shifts behind him, dagger still up, but her line of sight is blocked. The bandit swallows hard against the palm and stops talking.
The first riders clear the haze, spears and scarves twitching in the heat. They fan out when they see the new shape waiting for them.

The Widow
Good. Hold there.
She edges left, using Morningspank as a shield while she keeps the knife on the prisoner.

The Bandit
You are too late, all of you. They will take anyone standing in the open.
One rider lifts a hand from the group, and the others begin to slow. Whether it is a warning or a signal, they are close enough to be heard.
“Are the riders here to help the widow?”
NO (VeryUnlikely, rolled 68)
The riders do not slow to offer aid, but instead draw curved blades as they fan out to surround the basin. It is clear they have no intention of helping the widow.
“I shout for the widow to slip away”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +1)

Morningspank’s shout cuts through the heat, and the widow hears it at once. She snatches one step back from the tree, knife still up, eyes flicking toward the nearest gap in the riders' ring.

Morningspank
Slip away!

The Widow
Not without the name I came for.
The bandit, still pinned, lifts his head just enough to see the circle tighten. His breath catches, and he jerks one shoulder against the trunk as if the bark itself might hide him.

The Bandit
They are here for all of us, not just her.
One rider breaks from the ring and points his blade straight toward the basin, signaling the others to close. Sand skitters over the stones as the gap behind the widow shrinks to a sliver.

The Widow
Then hold them long enough for me to move.
“I cover the widow's retreat”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -3)

Morningspank plants his axe and spreads his stance, forcing the riders to look at him instead of the widow. She uses the opening at once, slipping behind his shoulder toward the basin’s broken stones.
The nearest rider checks his advance, blade wavering for a heartbeat, and that heartbeat is enough. The widow is out of the gap before it seals.
Sand scrapes under Morningspank’s boots as he holds the line. The strain jars up his arms, and a hot sting blooms where a shaft of wind flings grit across his face.

The Widow
Keep them on me. I only need one more moment.

The Bandit
They will not let us all leave alive.
The circle tightens again, but now the widow has space to move, and the bandit has seen it. The riders are split between the axe in front of them and the woman sliding away behind it.
A rider lifts his blade and turns his horse toward Morningspank, forcing the choice into the open.
“I hold the riders back”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +0)

The bandit’s view jerks as Morningspank becomes the wall the riders cannot cross. Hooves churn the basin edge, but the line stops short of him.

The Bandit
He actually holds them.
The widow reaches the broken stones and turns back, blade lifted, her earlier retreat buying her a clear lane to the prisoner.

The Widow
Now. Tell me the names.

The Bandit
Two of them, maybe three. The one in the red wrap leads.
A rider tries to press forward, but Morningspank’s stand forces the horse to shy, and the ambusher loses the opening.
The widow seizes the answer at once, cutting the list’s last missing piece into place.

The Widow
Good. That is enough.
Behind Morningspank, the circle still looms, but the widow has what she came for, and the next move hangs on whether she runs or strikes.
