Adventure of Lucas Broadleaf 1

The floor drops away beneath Lucas Broadleaf, and the mountain swallows him in dust and darkness. He lands hard in a hidden library beneath tangled roots, shelves towering around him in ragged rows of old stone and rotting wood.

Scrolls whisper as they settle, their brittle edges shivering toward the silver ring in his grasp. Pale motes drift through the air, lit by the ring’s glow and by a scholar’s voice echoing from somewhere deep between the stacks.

The Dragon in Human Form rises from the dust beside him, cloak and dark hair caked with powder, their attention fixed on the ring more than on the fall. Far above, the shattered sanctuary groans faintly, already becoming distant.

Between the shelves, a narrow aisle of fallen parchment opens toward a deeper chamber. The hidden library waits, hushed and ancient, while the ring keeps answering the presence below.

The silver ring remains dim and unresponsive, its light failing to flicker or pulse in recognition of the voice echoing through the stacks. It offers no guidance toward the reader, holding its silence as the library remains indifferent to the ring's presence.

Lucas holds still in the dim hush of the buried stacks. The faint reading voice does not come from the shelves in front of him, but from deeper in, braided through the aisles like wind through roots.

The Dragon in Human Form straightens from the pillar, head tilting as the sound becomes clearer. Dust shivers loose from a beam overhead and settles toward a narrow corridor between the bookcases.

Lucas follows the sound and the hidden murmur resolves into a tight alcove at the end of the new passage, where chained folios hang open on a stone lectern. Their pages turn by themselves, whispering in a dry, papery cadence.

The shelves around the alcove glow with old runes, each one answering the murmur in a different thread of forgotten memory. The ring in Lucas’s hand stays dull, but the room around it finally speaks.
