The Threshold of the Oath

Golden runelight spills over the hidden library, softening the dust and the carved stone. The stairwell yawns open at the rear, but no one rushes it.

Valerius

Valerius

Take the first lesson with you, Lucas. Oaths are not chains alone. They are also doors, if you know who forged them and why.

Valerius rests a hand on the old hilt at his side, his shoulders easing now that the seal is open. The weight in his face is still there, but it no longer looks unbearable.

Kaelith

Kaelith

He stands where the others can see him, and does not flinch. That matters.

The Dragon in Human Form

The Dragon in Human Form

You have earned a pause, human. Use it well. Descending angry is a poor habit, and a dangerous one.

The Dragon in Human Form leans against the wall with folded arms, expression unreadable beneath the gold wash. For once, they sound more like a witness than a hunter.

The light makes the stair look less like a grave and more like a way forward.

If you wish it, I can tell you what the Graystone vow cost the rest of us, before we go down.

The Threshold of the Oath

Lucas eases down onto the stair lip, one hand braced on the cold stone, the other still near the silver ring. The opening below breathes up a thin draft, but the library stays hushed around him.

Valerius

Valerius

The Graystone vow began as mercy, not duty. My father swore it when the hunters came, and your mother gave us the shape of the lie we were all forced to live inside.

Valerius

Valerius

It cost us our names in public, our pride in private, and the chance to be simple kin to you. Every comfort at Graystone was paid for with watchfulness.

Valerius draws a slow breath, then lowers himself to the same step, sword angled carefully against his knee. The steadiness in his face softens into something older and more human.

Kaelith

And it cost them fear. They fed the silence around you so no one would hear the wrong truth spoken at the wrong time.

A costly kindness, then. Rare enough to be called foolish by lesser minds, and wise by those who survive it.

Valerius glances toward Lucas, then down into the gold-lit stairwell. He lifts one hand and points to the dark steps, where the runes fade into older carving. One name is cut there, half-worn away, and a second groove beside it looks like it once held a ring.

Valerius

Valerius

There. That is the old oath. And if you want the rest of the story, I will give it to you before we descend.
