The teacher paces between desks, voice even and deliberate, then taps the board. A few students keep writing. Norman sits with his notebook open, the shelter flyer tucked beside it like a second assignment.

Community service matters because it shows up in real places, for real people. That shelter drive you all heard about is a good example.

The teacher stops pacing and looks straight at Norman, waiting. The room goes very still, pens slowing around the edges.

Norman

Norman

I have been helping with it.

Classmate

He really is doing both.

Teacher

Good. Then you understand the point. The question is whether you can keep that promise and still keep up here.

A couple of heads turn. Norman’s schedule sits under his hand, school on one side, shelter hours on the other.

The teacher folds their hands and waits for Norman to answer, the whole class held on that choice.

Keep up with schoolwork

Do both, volunteer and attend class

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +0)

Norman steadies his paper with one palm and answers in a calm, even voice. He frames the shelter shift as real practice, not a distraction, and the room listens.

Teacher

Teacher

That is a fair way to treat it. Helping people is work, and work can teach discipline.

The teacher gives a short nod, then marks something on the attendance sheet. Norman’s notebook stays open, but his hand tightens around the edge, a small cost for speaking up in front of everyone.

See? He can do both.

A few students glance over, then back to their own pages. The teacher turns the lesson back toward the board, no longer questioning Norman’s place in either room.

Norman

The shelter flyer stays visible beside the notes.

Teacher

Teacher

Keep the balance, Norman. I will expect the same focus on the assignment.
