The cafeteria settles into a steady hum around the volunteer table. Mateo finishes straightening the flyers and slides a fresh stack toward Norman, the cleared space between them neat and ready.

Norman takes the flyers. The paper is warm from Mateo's hands, the shelter logo bright against the folds. Nearby, a few students drift past with trays, but the corner of the table feels oddly calm.

Mateo gives a small grin, then leans on the table with an open, patient posture, clearly waiting because he wants the answer and not just the chatter.

The lunch rush rolls on behind them, but the moment stays easy. Mateo keeps his attention on Norman, ready to listen while the next stack of flyers waits between them.

Mateo hands over the stack again, this time lighter in the middle, sorted by the doors they need to reach. He taps the top flyer once, like he is marking the plan in his head.

Mateo smiles toward the lunch crowd, then back at Norman, easy and warm. The flyers sit squared in Norman's hands, ready for the doors when he is.

Norman leaves High school cafeteria behind and arrives at Library.

The library greets Norman with cool air and the hush of pages turning somewhere deeper in the stacks. A desk lamp glows over a sign-in sheet, and the front tables are mostly empty.

Norman slips in with the flyers tucked under one arm, then slows by a window seat where the afternoon light lays a pale stripe across the tabletop.

He sets his notebook down, opens it, and pulls the first flyer free from the stack.

The librarian points toward a neat corner near the checkout line, already clearing a small patch of counter with one hand.

Norman crosses to the circulation desk and sets the flyers down in the cleared space. The librarian straightens the stack into a neat line beside the sign-in sheet.

Norman turns away from the desk, notebook in hand, and heads toward the back table. The floor is quiet enough to hear the soft tap of his shoes between the shelves.

He slides into the chair by the wall and opens his notebook to a fresh page. The corner table catches the last stripe of afternoon light, brighter now that the flyers are no longer in his way.

From here, Norman can see the flyer display by the desk and the librarian still tidying the counter. A pencil lies ready beside his notebook, waiting for the first note.

Norman turns the fresh page and writes the date across the top, then the first subject beneath it. His pencil moves with quick, neat strokes as he copies a few lines from the library’s bulletin board into the margin.

He pauses, taps the pencil once, and adds a second note from the shelter flyers at the desk, connecting the classroom list to the volunteer sign-up without looking away from the page for long.

The pattern settles in fast, and the notes come together into a tidy map of options: one class time, one study block, one after-school slot.

A small crease of paper slips free from between the notebook pages, and Norman catches it before it falls. It turns out to be a library flyer about an elective interest meeting in the afternoon.

The librarian leans on the counter, watching Norman’s page with quiet approval while the afternoon light shifts over the desk.

A narrow shadow slides over Norman’s notebook as the librarian straightens from the counter with a small stack of forms. They glance toward the flyer display, then back to him, as if checking a detail they had not meant to leave visible.

From the circulation desk, the shelter flyers flutter once under the vent, and Norman notices the top sheet has room for only one more name before the hour block fills. The librarian’s hand rests on the empty line, waiting.

Norman slides the form closer and sets his pencil to the open line. The page gives under his hand, then stills as he writes his name beside the after-school block.

The librarian’s shoulders loosen. They take the sheet with a careful nod, then add a second, smaller note beneath Norman’s line, marking him for table setup.

They turn the form back toward the desk display, and the flyer stack settles into a tidy fan beside it.

For a quiet second, the library hum returns around them, and the librarian waits with an open, expectant look.

Norman glances toward the tall windows, where the afternoon sun still hangs high and bright above the school courtyard. The final bell is clearly still hours away.

Norman leaves Library behind and arrives at next class.

The hallway outside next class hums with late-day traffic, lockers snapping shut and shoes skimming polished floor. Norman slips in with the stream, his notebook tucked close against his backpack.

A teacher at the doorway checks names against a clipboard, then waves him in with a quick nod.

Norman crosses to an open desk, sliding into it before the last open spots disappear.

The teacher sets a handout on the nearest desk, and the edge of Norman’s seat has a clear view of the whole room.

Norman reaches across the aisle and sets the handout on Classmate’s desk before they need to ask. The paper lands flat, with the corner already aligned to the desk edge.

Classmate straightens the sheet and glances at the header, then tucks it beside their pen with a small nod of approval.

The teacher’s voice carries over the soft scrape of chairs. A few students still settle in, but the room is already turning inward toward the lesson.

Classmate slides a spare handout over with an easy flick of the wrist. The page stops just short of Norman’s notebook, neat and waiting.

A couple of students look up from their desks, then back down as the teacher continues calling names. The room stays quiet, but the handout now makes a small, welcome bridge between the two desks.

A few desks over, a pencil pauses. Norman’s answer lands plainly, and the room keeps its quiet rhythm while the teacher marks another name.

Classmate gives Norman a quick, approving nod and straightens in their seat, as if the desk beside them has become a little more dependable.

The teacher moves on down the roster, and the class settles into a steady, ready hush around Norman.

Norman glances at the sign up sheet tucked into his notebook, but the list is already completely full. There is no more room for additional volunteers on the shelter drive.
