Jye-kule kneels on a lit auction block under strip-white lamps, the air thick with ozone, sweat, and machine lubricant. Shackles bite his wrists. Around him, a packed market ring leans forward, hungry for bloodless profit.

Seevin

Seevin

Sixteen thousand credits. For the trouble he’s been.

Seevin throws back his head and laughs, one hand spread over the bidding rail like he owns the dock, the pit, and everyone breathing in it.

A ripple passes through the crowd as a cloaked off-worlder steps from the shadow of a column, boots silent on the metal grating. Their data-slate flashes once, then dims.

The Off-Worlder

The Off-Worlder

Thirty-five thousand.

The number lands hard. A few spectators gasp. Someone whistles low. Seevin’s smile tightens, but he keeps it on for the crowd.

Seevin

Seevin

You’re making a mistake. That one bites.

Jye-kule feels the cold shiver of the cuffs, and the pressure of a hundred greedy eyes. The auctioneer raises both hands, ready to seal the sale, while the cloaked bidder waits without moving.

I strain against the shackles, making the metal groan loud enough for Seevin to hear.

Jye-kule hauls against the cuffs until the chain sings. The sound cuts through the chamber like a snapped cable, sharp enough to turn heads.

Seevin’s grin slips for a fraction. He steadies it fast, but his fingers tighten on the rail.

Seevin

Seevin

Enough of that. He’s strong, which is exactly why he fetches a better price.

The auctioneer pauses mid-gesture, eyes darting from the bucking chain to the crowd. The price display flickers, then holds.

The Off-Worlder

The Off-Worlder

He is not a prize to be tested.

A murmur rolls through the ring. Two guards shift nearer to the block, boots ringing on metal.

Seevin leans in toward the rail, smile back in place but thinner now. The room waits on the next bid.

I glare at the off-worlder and stay silent, curious about the man I inspect his attire and attempt to gain any insights about them from their appearance.

Jye-kule locks his glare on the off-worlder and lets the silence do the work. The hooded figure does not flinch. Instead, the drape of their cloak parts just enough to show tailored auction-house gloves, a polished collar clasp, and a compact bidder’s tablet held low and steady.

The fabric is expensive, star-travel worn but cleaned with care, and marked by a thin strip of imported metal threading the hem. Whoever stands there is no desperate buyer. They look like someone used to making other people disappear into paperwork.

The Off-Worlder

The Off-Worlder

Stillness can be a language. He understands it.

Seevin sees the exchange and his smile thins further. He lifts two fingers toward the auctioneer, signaling for the next call to land hard.

Seevin

Seevin

Going once. Thirty-five thousand. Do I hear forty?

The guards square their shoulders at the block, waiting for the room to commit. The off-worlder’s tablet tilts a fraction, ready for a counter.

The chamber holds its breath on the edge of the next bid.

I yell out at Seevin, "I swear on my life, you will regret selling me you bottom feeding scum!"

I swear on my life, you will regret selling me, you bottom feeding scum!

The words crack across the chamber and bounce off the bidding rail. A few heads in the crowd jerk back. Seevin’s smugness falters, just for a blink, as if he has tasted something sour.

Seevin

Seevin

He still thinks he has teeth.

The auctioneer lowers a hand, listening for the room to settle, but nobody speaks over that threat. The off-worlder’s hood angles a fraction, studying Jye-kule with cool, unreadable interest.

The Off-Worlder

The Off-Worlder

That tone suggests history, not theater.

Seevin forces a laugh that does not carry. He taps the rail, trying to reclaim the rhythm, but his eyes keep flicking back to Jye-kule.

Seevin

Seevin

You hear that, block? He’s all threats and no credits.

The chamber does not answer him. The guards hold their line, the crowd stays hushed, and Seevin’s next bid hangs in the air, suddenly less certain than before.

The auctioneer finally lifts both hands, then drops one toward the sealed slate at his podium. The crowd holds its breath as the chamber waits for the number to land.

The Off-Worlder

The Off-Worlder

Forty-two thousand credits.

A ripple runs through the room. Seevin’s jaw tightens, and his fingers curl against the rail as if he can physically squeeze the bid smaller.

Seevin

Seevin

Accepted. Final sale pending transfer.

The auctioneer stamps the console with a hard click. Somewhere behind the block, a restraint lock disengages with a sharp metallic chirp.

Jye-kule

Jye-kule

The lock is changing state.

The off-worlder inclines their hood toward Jye-kule, already turning as if the chamber belongs to them now. Two guards step in closer, one toward the chain, one toward the off-worlder.

Jye-kule stays still on the block, letting the room move around him instead of against him. The hush stretches thin as the guards slow, reading the off-worlder more than the prisoner.

The Off-Worlder

The Off-Worlder

Forty-two thousand for the man, not the merchandise. Release him intact.

Seevin

Seevin

Not merchandise, he thinks, and the word lands like a slap. This was supposed to be simple.

Seevin forces a smile that does not reach his eyes. He flicks a glance from Jye-kule to the bidder, weighing which loss hurts less.

Seevin

Seevin

You pay in full, you take him in full. That was always the arrangement.

The off-worlder tips their hood just enough to study Jye-kule directly. Their voice stays level, almost courteous.

The Off-Worlder

The Off-Worlder

I came for a survivor with Force talent, and I came to keep him out of Seevin’s hands.

The answer hangs there, clear now. Jye-kule’s silence buys him a sliver of room, and the chamber waits to see whether Seevin swallows the insult or tries to change the terms.

I stand and approach the stranger, "Wow, um, thanks I guess. I'm Jye-kule, but you can just call me Jye for short." I turn towards Seevin and taunt him, "Suck it nerd!" Then back to the stranger, "So, what was your name again?" I ask.

Jye-kule rises from the block, chains clinking once before the freed cuff slackens at his wrists. He steps toward the off-worlder with a crooked, breathless grin, then angles a sharp look back at Seevin.

Jye-kule

The Off-Worlder

A clean correction. Good. I would rather hear honesty than performative bravado.

The Off-Worlder

The Off-Worlder

Seevin, I suggest you remember the difference between ownership and leverage. One is gone.

Seevin

Seevin

He was mine until your credits changed the air. Do not mistake purchase for mercy.

The Off-Worlder

The Off-Worlder

I do not. That is why I bought time, not a cage. Jye-kule walks with me, if he chooses to.

The Off-Worlder

The Off-Worlder

And Jye-kule, if you want the truth, I bought you because survivors notice exits. Can you see yours yet?

Jye-kule leaves Interstellar slave-auction chamber behind and arrives at off this dead end garbage rock.

"Yes." I say firmly, "Now let's take ours and get off this dead end garbage rock...you have a ship, right? Since you're an off worlder and all?"

The auction chamber gives way to dead rock air, hot metal, and a dockside wind that tastes of rust. Jye-kule is already beyond the threshold, and the Off-Worlder guides the way with an easy turn of the shoulder, as if this is routine.

Jye-kule

Jye-kule

Yes. Let's take ours and get off this dead end garbage rock. You have a ship, right?

The Off-Worlder

The Off-Worlder

I do. And I am pleased to hear you ask like someone who expects the answer to matter.

Seevin stays behind in the auction light, small in the doorway now, while the corridor ahead opens toward hangar traffic and distant engines. The Off-Worlder slows just enough to let Jye-kule keep pace beside them.

The Off-Worlder

The Off-Worlder

My ship is not a prison, Jye-kule. Step aboard, and we will call it a departure instead of a purchase.

They are giving him a choice at the hatch, not in the room.
