Adventure of Tanor 1

The Apprentice’s foot slips on the last stair, and they sag hard against the cold wall. Dust falls in a thin silver curtain as the library groans somewhere above.

Tanor plants himself between the broken steps and his companion, sword low, shoulder set against the dark hush of the archive level.

Their hands press to their ribs, then to the stone, as if borrowing steadiness from the wall. The colder air below the stairwell beads on their skin.

A faint, crooked smile passes over their face, tired but real. For the first time since the rift, their breathing begins to slow.

The stone shudders once more, then eases into a distant murmur. The descent lies ahead, and the moment feels almost calm enough to speak.

Tanor grips the Apprentice under one arm and takes the broken stairs in a single steady pull. Dust shakes loose overhead, but his footing holds, and the colder air below meets them like a clean blade.

They step off the last stair into the archive level. The chamber opens wider than the stairwell, rows of stone shelves lost in blue shadow, and the old hush of the library returns beneath the rumble above.

A narrow arch stands half-swallowed by stacked scroll cases, its lintel marked with a faint green stain that answers the distant rift light behind them.

The Apprentice looks toward the hidden arch, then back to Tanor, breath still shallow but steadier. The path ahead is clear, and for once the collapse does not reach this room.
