Dunmere’s gatehouse rises from the rain, its timber arch crowded with clerks and waiting carts. Pell Ordan, a lean middle-aged man with ash-brown hair, a russet clerk’s coat, and ink-stained fingers, stands among sealed notices and arrival ledgers.

Iven Rusk
That is Pell, beside the notice board. Do not let him see me point.
Iven keeps walking beside Brindle without approaching the gatehouse. Two young guards in dull green cloaks step toward the cart, one carrying a spear and the other reaching for the rear latch.

Edrin Vale
Good day. We are bound for the market, with trade goods and a sealed notice for the reeve.
Pell glances toward Mara’s covered seat, then makes a small signal. A stocky older official in a dark blue surcoat turns from the gate ledger and begins guiding the cart toward a narrow side passage.

Mara Venn
That is not the reeve’s receiving yard. Edrin, keep Brindle here.
Beneath the rear canvas, Octavius hears the latch lift and the cart’s wheels angle toward the passage. His bow remains within reach, while Patter gives one silent warning growl near his boots.

Director's note
I lower my bow and set it aside. Firing down a 'guard', even if his brothers suspect he is dirty, will immediately mark us as hostile enemies. This needs to be handled carefully. My hand drifts lower to rest on Patters head, hoping to ease his nervousness, even if he's likely only responding to our

Octavius lowers his bow and sets it aside beneath the rear canvas. His hand settles on Patter’s head, and the fox’s warning growl fades to a tense silence.

Edrin Vale
Easy, friend. We have no quarrel with Dunmere’s gate. Let us keep the cart here until the reeve’s proper yard is available.
Edrin holds Brindle steady as the side passage narrows between wet timber walls. The young guard at the latch, a young woman with a sturdy build and rain-dark blond hair, hesitates, glancing toward the older official, an older man with a weathered face, ruddy skin, and close-cropped gray hair, for instruction.

The Older Official
The receiving yard is occupied. The reeve’s clerk has directed this cart elsewhere. Move along, and do not delay the gate.

Mara Venn
Then bring the reeve’s clerk here. My sealed notice is addressed to the reeve, not to an unnamed side passage.
Pell’s ink-stained fingers tighten around his ledger. Beyond him, the gate queue shifts impatiently, while Iven keeps walking and never turns his head.

The Older Official
Very well. We will inspect the notice at the gatehouse, in full view of the guards. No one needs to fear a public examination.

Director's note
I settle back into my 'seat' in the back of the cart, hand still resting on Patters head and shoulders, slowly stroking my fingertips through his thick outer coat, simultaneously calming us both by degrees, and reinforcing our tenuous bond
The cart stops beneath the gatehouse awning, within sight of both young guards and the waiting queue. Octavius remains seated beneath the rear canvas, fingers moving slowly through Patter’s thick coat.

Edrin Vale
Then inspect it here, with the reeve’s clerk present and every guard watching. We will not enter a passage chosen without explanation.
The older official steps closer, but Edrin keeps Brindle’s reins firm. Mara remains behind the canvas, one hand protecting the sealed notice beneath her cloak.

The Older Official
Hand the notice to me. I will carry it to the reeve, and this obstruction can end.

Mara Venn
No. The seal is for the reeve’s eyes. He may open it himself, here or in his proper receiving yard.
Pell shifts behind the notice board, his ledger held too tightly. The young woman guard looks from him to Mara, then lowers her hand from the latch.

Guard Tessa
Clerk Pell, should we call the reeve? The notice is addressed to him, and the cart has not broken any gate law.
Director's note
Mara and Edrin seem to have this handled, my interference is not helpful right now. Still I sit quietly, listening, patient.

Patter’s ears remain high beneath Octavius’s slow fingers, but his growl fades. Behind the canvas, Octavius stays seated and silent while the gatehouse watches.

Pell Ordan
There is no need to trouble the reeve over a sealed notice. I can record its arrival and deliver it in the proper course.

Guard Tessa
The proper course is to summon him when a notice bears his seal’s authority. I will send for the reeve.
The young guard signals her companion. The other guard, a young adult man with a sturdy build, brown skin, and close-cropped black hair beneath a dull green guard’s cloak steps toward the inner arch, spear lowered but ready, while the older official’s jaw tightens.

The Older Official
Guard Tessa, return to your post. Clerk Pell has already given an instruction.

Guard Tessa
And the reeve may correct me if I have misunderstood his law. Until then, the cart remains here.
Mara keeps the notice beneath her cloak, watching Pell through the gap in the canvas. Edrin holds Brindle steady, and the waiting queue grows quiet around them.
✓ Quest Accepted
Bring Mara’s sealed notice to the reeve
“"Mara" I whisper, leaning over closer so that our words might not be so easily overheard beyond the immediate few inches, "Perhaps we should mention we have reason to suspect multiple attempts to intercept this message, and so delivering it to the reeve and only the reeve is worth our waiting until he is available in person. We can pull aside from the queue until he is free, or let them turn us away. We should not surrender it to anyone but the reeve."”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +1)

Octavius
Mara, we have reason to suspect multiple attempts to intercept this message. Delivering it only to the reeve is worth waiting for him in person. We can leave the queue or wait, but we should not surrender it to anyone else.
Octavius settles deeper beneath the canvas, one hand resting on Patter’s head and shoulders. His fingers move slowly through the fox’s thick coat while he listens, bow set aside.

Mara Venn
Guard Tessa, that is precisely our concern. We will wait here for the reeve, or leave with the notice still sealed. No intermediary will receive it.

Guard Tessa
Agreed. A sealed notice naming the reeve’s authority should not be diverted by a clerk or sent through an unmarked passage.
The queue murmurs approval. Pell’s ledger lowers a fraction, while the older official steps back from the cart, visibly deprived of the authority he tried to claim.

Pell Ordan
Very well. Guard Tessa, send for the reeve. The notice will remain sealed until he chooses to receive it.

Guard Tessa
I will. Keep the cart beneath the awning, and no one touches the notice until the reeve arrives.
Director's note
My hand on Patters head drifts lower, fingertips digging into the thick fur to scratch lazy and soothingly against his the base of his ear and cheek. To Mara, I offer a similarly reassuring 'well done' smile in silence

Octavius remains beneath the canvas, fingers easing through Patter’s thick coat and scratching gently behind his ear. The fox’s tense posture softens by degrees.
Mara catches Octavius’s silent, reassuring smile and answers with the smallest nod. Edrin keeps Brindle steady while the cart waits beneath the awning.
A middle-aged woman in a dark green surcoat approaches from the inner yard, tall and spare, with iron-gray hair braided close and a bronze reeve’s chain at her throat.

Reeve Anja Vey
I am Reeve Anja Vey. Guard Tessa said a sealed notice bearing my authority was nearly diverted. Who carries it?

Mara Venn
I do, Reeve Vey. It remains sealed, and I will place it in your hands directly.
Mara steps down only far enough to present the notice without exposing the cart’s other contents. Pell watches rigidly as the reeve accepts it and examines the seal.

Reeve Anja Vey
The seal is intact. Clerk Pell, explain why this cart was directed away from my receiving yard before I was consulted.

Director's note
I'm fairly curious what his excuse is as well, and hold my tongue, letting this boy try to talk his way out of the dubious situation he tried so incredibly hard to force. Explain away, oh lying liar....

Pell Ordan
Reeve Vey, I believed the receiving yard was compromised. The side passage is watched, secured, and less exposed than the gate.
Anja studies Pell without blinking. Behind the canvas, Octavius remains silent, fingertips working through Patter’s thick fur until the fox’s rigid shoulders gradually loosen.

Reeve Anja Vey
You believed this, yet did not summon me, consult Guard Tessa, or record the change in the arrival ledger?

Pell Ordan
The queue was disorderly, Reeve. I acted to prevent delay. The older official can confirm that the passage is customary.

The Older Official
It is customary for urgent arrivals, yes. Pell gave a clear instruction, and I followed it.

Guard Tessa
That is not what the gate law says. The receiving yard is open, and this notice bears the reeve’s authority.
Mara catches Octavius’s quiet, approving smile and lowers her gaze to the notice. Anja turns toward the waiting queue, her bronze chain glinting beneath the awning.
“Should we let her know how your travel was harassed through the forest and mountains?" I ask quietly- I'm less concerned with actually being overheard, and more concerned with being disruptive to the Reeve's line of query. Though if she happens to overhear, it can only be useful. "And how Edrin was used as bait by bandits trying to find you- and the letter?”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled -1)
Octavius settles deeper beneath the canvas, one hand still stroking Patter’s thick fur. He leans toward Mara, keeping his voice low while Anja questions Pell.

Octavius
Should we tell her how we were harassed through the forest and mountains? How Edrin was used as bait by bandits trying to find you and the letter?

Mara Venn
Yes. Tell her plainly. The reeve needs the whole shape of this, not only the danger at her gate.
Mara’s answer carries farther than intended beneath the awning. Anja turns from Pell, while Edrin’s hands tighten on Brindle’s reins and Patter presses into Octavius’s scratching fingers.

Reeve Anja Vey
I heard enough to understand that this began before Dunmere. Speak, and do not omit how Edrin became bait. I will hear the travelers directly.

Mara Venn
Octavius and Edrin were pursued through the forest and mountains. Men watched our camp, tested our route, and used Edrin’s cart as bait to draw me and the letter into their reach.
The account wins Anja’s attention, but costs Mara the protection of withholding details: Reeve Anja Vey now knows the party’s danger is organized, and expects Octavius to add what he witnessed.
“"My lady," I start, unsure of how to address the Reeve, "..I have lived alone many years, so if my manner seems rough please forgive me. But When I found Edrin, he was being 'held' by his overturned and ransacked cart with a troupe of bandits watching the roads for anyone who might come to his aid. And once miss here," I gesture to Mara," joined us, we were trailed and harassed along the path. One of our pursuers lost this at the edge of our camp last night." I produce the torn material with the wax and odd stitching as evidence. "I am not entirely certain the chase has completely ended. I don't know what is on that paper, but if it were information that could be used by others, I might suggest burning it now that you know it's contents.”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +2)

Octavius
My lady, forgive my rough manner. I found Edrin held by an overturned, ransacked cart while bandits watched the roads. After Mara joined us, pursuers harassed us along the path.
Mara retrieves the canvas-wrapped scrap and passes it forward. Octavius opens the wrapping, revealing torn gray cloth, pale blue wax, and deliberate red stitching.

Octavius
One pursuer lost this at our camp. I am not certain the chase has ended. If the letter’s contents could endanger others, I recommend burning it after you know them.
Octavius settles back beneath the canvas, lowering his bow aside. His fingers continue stroking Patter’s thick coat, scratching slowly at the fox’s cheek while he watches Anja.
Mara receives Octavius’s silent, approving smile. Edrin keeps Brindle steady, and the awning’s gathered queue waits through the rain for the reeve’s judgment.

Reeve Anja Vey
You have spoken plainly, Octavius, and the cloth supports your account. I will examine the letter myself, record only what Dunmere must retain, then destroy it if its contents put others at risk.

Reeve Anja Vey
Pell, the older official, and everyone involved in diverting this cart will remain here while I determine who served the reeve and who served the watchers.
