Serel leads Octavius along the high goat path, moving quietly beneath dripping firs. Ahead, a hooded lantern marks the ridge camp, where Edrin and Mara wait beside the secured cart.
Edrin rises at their approach, tired but unharmed. Mara lowers her guarded shoulders, and Brindle gives a soft, familiar snort as Octavius returns with the warden.

Edrin Vale
You found help, and found us before worry turned into foolishness. Serel, welcome. Octavius, take the eastern side and help me raise the shelter again.
Octavius keeps his enchanted bow strung and arrow nocked while he works. Together, they reset the canvas, brace the windward poles, and clear sightlines around the cart.

Mara Venn
I can stand watch after we eat, but sleep would be welcome. Serel, how many of these watchers are below, and why do they fear this road?

Serel Thorne
Enough to make the crossing unsafe, not enough to trouble this ridge tonight. They serve no banner I recognize. As for your brotherhood, Octavius, the Greenwardens scattered after the capitol campaign.
The shelter settles into a defensible shape, and Edrin begins warming water over a rekindled fire. Serel studies Octavius across the rising steam, pausing before the rest of her account.
“"Edrin, Mara, rest. I will stay here tonight and keep watch while I speak with Ranger Thorne." I glance her way, letting her know my intentions are what I say they are. She can stay, or go, attack or parlay, but my intention is what it is. "Ma'am, Will you join me for the watch?"”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +2)

Octavius
Edrin, Mara, rest. I will stay here tonight and keep watch while I speak with Ranger Thorne.
Octavius glances toward Serel, making his meaning plain without lowering his bow. Edrin nods, and Mara eases beneath the shelter as Brindle settles nearby.

Octavius
Ma'am, will you join me for the watch?

Serel Thorne
I will. Your intention is clear, Greenwarden, and I would rather speak where both our eyes can serve us.
Serel takes the windward side of the camp, keeping the fire between herself and the cart. She draws her hood back and studies the darkened slopes.

Edrin Vale
Wake me if the watch changes, friend. Until then, I will trust your judgment and let the ridge keep its own counsel.

Serel Thorne
The Greenwardens scattered after the campaign, but not all abandoned their vows. Tell me what brought you back to these roads, and I will tell you who is hunting them.
“I never abandoned my vows." I answer, solemn but genuine. "I swore to be alone for as long as needed. I will not question the Green if my path brought me to others. If my vow was unfulfilled, I would not have met them, nothing more nothing less." I take a slow, quiet inhale, letting my senses expand outward while I give Greenwarden Thorne time to reply. I have been alone a long while, and my replies are as slow as tolkeins Ents. I do not resent the silence that comes before her response.”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled -1)

Octavius
I never abandoned my vows. I swore to be alone for as long as needed. I will not question the Green if my path brought me to others. If my vow was unfulfilled, I would not have met them, nothing more, nothing less.
Octavius takes a slow, quiet breath. Rain whispers through the firs, fire settles into coals, and his attention expands across the ridge without disturbing its silence.

Octavius
The ridge is quiet. Serel is listening.
Serel does not hurry him. She watches the dark slopes with one hand resting near her bow, allowing the long pause to stand between them like an honored elder.

Serel Thorne
Then the Green has answered you more plainly than most receive its counsel. Others came to your path, and you did not turn them away.

Serel Thorne
That is not abandonment, Octavius. It is a vow kept without mistaking solitude for purity. The scattered wardens should hear how you understand it.
Far below, a night bird calls once and falls silent. Serel's gaze shifts toward the sound, then returns to Octavius, her expression solemn but less guarded.
“It's a true nightbird, not one of the Greenwarden rangers. But the call is so similar to the sound for 'ally' that I can't help but crack into a silent laugh that shudders my shoulders and breaks a large smile across my face. I don't break the quiet, instead using the small hand signals that are just as fluid as the bird Cant, <Why would someone who has taken a GreenVow of solitude 'until complete' feel the sudden need to gather herbs to sell and find a road to town? Have I not spent the last five years in silence? Have I not turned you away during that time for that silence? Who could change my heart but the Green itself?>”
SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled -1)
The night bird calls again, unmistakably genuine. Octavius's shoulders shudder with silent laughter, and a broad smile breaks through his usual stern expression.
His movement nudges the enchanted bow against a stone. The faint click carries across the ridge, and Serel's hand settles more firmly beside her own bow.

Octavius
Why would one who swore solitude until the Green deemed it complete suddenly gather herbs to sell, then seek a road to town? Have I not kept five years of silence, turning even you away? Who could change my heart but the Green itself?
Octavius gives the words through small, fluid hand signs, the gesture-language of the bird Cant. His smile remains as the question crosses the firelight.

Serel Thorne
No one but the Green, I think. Herbs are remedies, coin buys passage, and a road gathers people. The vow did not break; it brought you where your service was needed.

Serel Thorne
You sought no town for comfort or profit alone. You were being drawn toward lives that required your hands, though you mistook the summons for your own sudden purpose.
Below, another true bird answers from the dark. Serel glances toward the sound, then back to Octavius, her guarded respect deepened by his admission.
“It is embarrassing for me that I am more comfortable with the silent hand signs than spoken word, even if I used it so readily with Edrin and Mara. The ability to communicate without speaking suddenly sits so heavily on my shoulders that I break the silence by accident with a sudden deep inhale that shudders with the risk of emotional release. <I was so afraid, Ranger Thorne...> My hands falter in place before I take a breath and compose myself more stonily. <I feel reassured that my purpose hasn't faltered.>”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +2)
The silent signs, so easy with Edrin and Mara, suddenly weigh heavily on Octavius's shoulders. His hands falter, and a deep breath shudders out into the firelit quiet.

Octavius
I was so afraid, Ranger Thorne.
The admission hangs between the coals and the rain. Octavius steadies himself, his expression hardening into composure as his hands resume their careful motion.

Octavius
I feel reassured that my purpose has not faltered.

Serel Thorne
Then let the fear stand beside the reassurance, Greenwarden. Fear did not turn you from the road, nor from those who now depend upon you.
Serel's hand leaves her bow and rests openly against her knee. Across the ridge, the hidden dark remains quiet, while the fire gives Octavius's words a place to settle.

Serel Thorne
Your purpose has not faltered. It has become visible. That is heavier than solitude, but it is also proof that the Green still moves through you.
“<Ranger Thorne, > I use her name sign as I've always known it, respectful of her authority and mentorship. <I feel drawn to help these strangers find town. I felt drawn to the town from the start, but they would not be part of my path if the Green did not want me to join them, surely...>>”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +0)
Octavius forms Serel's name sign as he has always known it, precise and respectful. The gesture acknowledges her authority and the mentorship carried through years of silence.

Octavius
I feel drawn to help these strangers reach town. I felt drawn toward Dunmere from the start, and they would not be part of my path unless the Green meant me to join them.
His hands remain raised after the final sign, held steady in the firelight. Beyond the shelter, rain darkens the ridge, while Edrin and Mara sleep within reach of his watch.

Serel Thorne
You speak of the Green as a companion rather than a command, Octavius. That distinction matters. It leaves room for judgment, and for mercy.

Serel Thorne
Then help them reach Dunmere. Not because every stranger is meant to be saved, but because this road placed these particular lives in your keeping.
Serel inclines her head, accepting both his sign and his purpose. The coals breathe softly between them, and the high path east waits beneath the rain.
“I have to pause and think a moment, something she is not stranger to. Greenwardens have a joking stereotype of 'taking two years to reply to a polite hello', compared to the swift, polite smalltalk of no consequence that most people share. Edrin has seen the flaw in my own attempts at such. <Like a companion? Shouldn't I? Shouldn't you? Is the Green our lord commander whos orders are punishable by death, or are they clues to creating the world we want to be part of? Isn't the Green my companion in all things, advising my hand and my thoughts towards a safe world for animal and two leg alike?>”
SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled -1)

Octavius falls silent for a long while, hands lowered now, while rain threads through the firs and the coals sink toward ash. Serel waits without interrupting.

Octavius
The Green is my companion, not my commander. Its signs advise my hands and thoughts toward a safer world for animals and two-legged folk alike.
The pause stretches so long that Edrin's old joke becomes true in spirit. A coal collapses, sending a sudden spark into Octavius's sleeve and leaving a small scorched mark.

Serel Thorne
There is your answer, Greenwarden. A commander demands obedience. A companion offers counsel and trusts judgment to give it shape.
Octavius brushes the spark away before it catches. The brief sting and ruined thread are minor costs, but they pull his attention fully back to the watch.

Serel Thorne
The Green does not need servants who mistake every sign for an order. It needs hands willing to listen, choose, and accept the burden when choice goes poorly.

Serel Thorne
Keep that understanding. It will guide you more safely than any command, and it leaves room for mercy when the world offers no simple path.
Director's note
okay maybe I've learned a little on my own, but I couldn't have without her, and I have no doubt she knows ten thousand years more than I ever will, so there is no point in peacocking about it
“<Ranger Thorne, do you have any advise for me? You're the one I look up to most. You taught me everything I know...> <I feel ike a child next to your experiences. I am happy to learn from a true master. If you would honour me.>”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled -2)

Octavius
Ranger Thorne, do you have any advice for me? You are the one I look up to most. You taught me everything I know.

Octavius
I feel like a child beside your experience. I would be honored to learn from a true master.
Octavius gives the words through careful Cant signs, then speaks the final phrase aloud. His voice catches on the honorific, and the effort leaves his throat raw.

Serel Thorne
Then hear my first advice: stop measuring yourself against a lifetime you have not yet lived. You are not a child, and I am not a master beyond question.
Serel reaches across the coals and adjusts the scorched edge of his sleeve, pinching away the blackened thread. Her gaze remains steady and unmocking.

Serel Thorne
You learned much from me, Octavius, but you learned the rest by surviving alone. Keep your keen eyes, temper them with patience, and let your companions remain people rather than duties.

Serel Thorne
I will teach you gladly, Greenwarden. Begin by accepting that respect does not require peacocking, and humility does not require making yourself small.
“Her reply gives me pause, and I find myself uncomfortably aware of my posture, my tone, and my face. I exhale to relax my muscles, and straighten my spine and shoulders, giving her a decent 'calm smile' without TOO much 'bitch face' souring it. <Ranger Thorne, I admit I'm not certain how to reply. You tell me to be both proud and humble at the same time. I know my skills, but I also know that even if you are fallible, you still have forgotten ten thousand more things than I may ever learn in my mortal coil. Perhaps I should remind you that you need not humble yourself without cause.>”
FAILURE (Great Persuasion, rolled -1)
Serel’s reply leaves Octavius suddenly aware of his rigid shoulders, guarded mouth, and carefully measured tone. He exhales, loosens his muscles, and straightens with deliberate calm.

Octavius
Ranger Thorne, I admit I am not certain how to reply. You ask me to be proud and humble at once. I know my skills, but I could not have learned them without you.

Octavius
Even fallible, you have forgotten ten thousand more things than I may ever learn in my mortal life. There is no reason for you to humble yourself without cause.
He offers a calm smile, though the old sourness still tugs at one corner. The compliment lands heavily, more like a formal tribute than the honest balance he meant.

Serel Thorne
That is respect, Greenwarden, but not yet humility. You have placed me so high that my every mistake would become a lesson in your eyes.

Serel Thorne
Here is the useful part: name one skill you learned without me, then tell me where it still fails. Pride and humility can stand together when both are specific.
Serel’s expression softens. She has not accepted his praise as an answer, but she has given him a narrower path where admiration need not become surrender.
✓ Quest Accepted
Give Serel a specific account of a self-taught skill and its limits
“I give her a nod, and sign one-handedly. <Let me walk the perimeter of camp and think on this. Will you keep watch from here until I return?>”

Octavius
Let me walk the perimeter of camp and think on this. Will you keep watch from here until I return?
Octavius gives Serel a respectful nod and signs the request one-handedly, keeping his other hand near the strung bow. He steps away from the coals toward the shelter’s outer edge.

Serel Thorne
I will. Walk slowly, Greenwarden, and let the camp become familiar beneath your feet. Thought comes more clearly when the body remembers its ground.
Serel remains beside the fire, her attention divided between the sleeping cart, Brindle’s quiet shape, and the dark slopes beyond. She does not follow or interrupt.
Octavius circles the camp through wet grass and fir shadow, checking the shelter lines, wheel marks, and open approaches. Each circuit confirms the ridge remains quiet and defensible.

Octavius
The perimeter is sound. Serel’s lesson asks for accuracy, not performance.
By the time Octavius completes the circuit, his shoulders have settled and his thoughts have found a steadier pace. The fire burns low behind him, and Serel waits at her post.
“It is the better part of an hour before I return to the scout point above camp where Seral sits keeping watch. "Ranger Thorne." I speak aloud in the low croak that won't travel beyond a meter or two. "I have an answer for you. If I may rejoin your watch."”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled -1)
The better part of an hour passes before Octavius returns to the scout point above camp. Wet grass bends beneath his steps, and the ridge remains quiet below.
Serel sits where he left her, one knee raised, bow within reach. She turns as he approaches, recognizing his careful pace before he speaks.

Octavius
Ranger Thorne. I have an answer for you. If I may rejoin your watch.

Octavius
I have learned a little on my own, though I could not have done so without you. You know ten thousand years more than I ever will, so there is no point in peacocking about it.
His low croak carries no farther than a few paces. Octavius settles beside the fireward stones, leaving the bow ready and his attention on the dark slopes.

Serel Thorne
You have an answer, and you have returned. Both are welcome. Sit, Greenwarden, and keep watch with me.

Serel Thorne
As for the rest, gratitude is not peacocking. But remember this: years teach much, while judgment decides what those years are worth.
“I start to gesture with my hands but deliberately wring them together and push myself to speak aloud. "Ranger Thorne, you have been an exceptional teacher and mentor to me. Do not faff about with some humility shit, you know it's true. It's why I value your insight so highly. But I have learned things that you did not teach me. I learned that when I feel moved in a way that is different from my first instinct, I should trust the process. I have learned that sometimes, what we see as the natural order in a big picture sense... doesn't need to be a rule. You may have thought that Patter should die with his mother as a milk teeth kit. but he has changed my fate, the peddlers fate, and by that turn, both yours and mine again. You would have said to let him die. But by keeping him alive, I have fulfilled the Green's will."”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +2)
Octavius begins a Cant gesture, then deliberately wrings his hands together and pushes himself to speak aloud. The firelight catches his strained expression.

Octavius
Ranger Thorne, you have been an exceptional teacher and mentor. Do not faff about with humility nonsense. You know it is true, and that is why I value your insight so highly.

Octavius
I have learned things you did not teach me. When I feel moved differently from my first instinct, I should trust the process. What seems natural in the larger order need not be a rule.

Octavius
You might have let Patter die with his mother, a milk-teeth kit. Instead, I kept him alive. He changed my fate, the peddler's fate, and by that turn, both yours and mine again. I fulfilled the Green's will.
The last words leave Octavius's throat rough. He lowers his hands but does not look away, while rain whispers through the firs beyond the fire.

Serel Thorne
You have learned judgment, Greenwarden, and the courage to let compassion revise a rule. Patter is not an argument against the Green's order. He is proof that its living shape exceeds our guesses.

Serel Thorne
And yes, I would have been wrong. Keep that lesson close, Octavius. A mentor who cannot be corrected becomes another kind of danger.
“I crack a silent laugh again that shakes my shoulder as little more than a chuffed exhale kept deliberately quiet by practice. "I am relieved. I was worried you would hit me with a little willow stick again like when I was a child being sass-mouthed." I didn't actually fear that, but it hopefully breaks the tension of too much honesty at once.”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled -1)

A silent laugh shakes Octavius's shoulder, escaping as a carefully muffled chuff. The practice keeps it from carrying far, though one coal shifts with the movement and sparks briefly.

Octavius
I am relieved. I was worried you would hit me with a little willow stick again, like when I was a child being sass-mouthed.
The teasing breaks the solemnity between them. Octavius's quiet amusement has a cost: the shifted coal spits once, a small sound in the listening dark.

Serel Thorne
You were not worried. You were testing whether I still remember where the willow grows.
Serel's stern expression gives way to a narrow smile. She nudges the coal back with a blackened stick, then settles her hand beside her bow.

Serel Thorne
For the record, you earned every tap. But you also learned to think before turning sass into a battlefield tactic, which is worth more than my correction.

Serel Thorne
Keep your hard-won lessons, Greenwarden. I will keep the willow where it belongs, unless you make me reconsider.
“I flash a grin at her, hopefully one wide enough to overcome my natural scowl; an expression she ABSOLUTELY knows well for what it is. If there was anyone in my life who could see through my 'bitch face' it would be her without question. "And how many lessons can I get from you before you start remembering where the willow grows?"”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +0)
Octavius flashes Serel a broad grin, stretching his familiar scowl into something unmistakably mischievous. She knows the expression at once, and the recognition warms the quiet between them.

Octavius
And how many lessons can I get from you before you start remembering where the willow grows?
His shoulder nudges the fireward stone as he settles, sending one coal skittering against the rim. The sharp click carries a few paces into the listening dark.

Serel Thorne
That depends. Are you asking how many lessons remain, or how many chances you have before I use the stick?
Serel's eyes flick briefly toward the slopes, checking the sound, then return to his grin. Her mouth tightens against laughter as she lifts one finger in warning.

Serel Thorne
You have learned enough to make the question dangerous, and little enough to make the answer obvious. I can teach you for the rest of this watch.

Serel Thorne
But if you turn every lesson into peacocking, Greenwarden, I will remember exactly where the willow grows.
“I stand, deliberately bowing in an elaborate fashion that gives her a wide opening to box my ears. She knows me since my childhood, if there was anyone who can see past my face and into my jesting intention it would be her. If anything, our history should give me a bonus to being a fond student/adopted child. "You know I respect you deeply," I say, truthfully and as genuinely as I can be, "but you also know that I love you like an adopted mother. I am asking you if there is any advice you have." I stand up, and then move in to take a hug from her. "I won't argue even if your advice is to make sure I remember to put on mittens. You are the one I will always listen to."”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +2)

Octavius rises and bows with elaborate solemnity, opening himself to the familiar correction. Serel recognizes the jesting invitation beneath his stern face and does not waste it.

Octavius
You know I respect you deeply. But you also know I love you like an adopted mother. Is there any advice you have?
He straightens, then steps in and embraces her. The gesture is unguarded, though his bow remains within easy reach beside the fire.

Octavius
I will not argue, even if your advice is to remember my mittens. You are the one I will always listen to.
Serel folds her arms around him without hesitation. For a moment, the warden's vigilance gives way to the warmth of a bond carried from his childhood into the rain-dark present.

Serel Thorne
Then listen well, my difficult son. Keep learning from your own judgment, but never let gratitude blind you to your teacher's mistakes, including mine.

Serel Thorne
And wear the mittens when the cold demands it. Wisdom is not always grand enough to deserve peacocking.
“"...Ranger Thorne, I know I have always spoken to you as a teacher, until tonight. May I ask your feelings on me saying that you are like my mother?"”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +2)

Octavius
Ranger Thorne, I have always spoken to you as a teacher, until tonight. May I ask how you feel about me saying you are like my mother?
Octavius keeps his hands resting lightly against Serel's arms, his face unusually open beneath its familiar sternness. Rain whispers beyond the shelter.

Serel Thorne
You may ask, difficult son. I feel honored, and a little startled. I have thought of you as my responsibility for so long that the word does not frighten me.
Serel studies him at close range, her silver-threaded braid damp against her cloak. Her expression holds tenderness without surrendering the warden's steady watchfulness.

Serel Thorne
If I am like your mother, then hear me clearly. I am proud of what you became, but I will not pretend I made you alone.

Serel Thorne
You learned from the Green, from hardship, from your own errors, and now from the people you choose to protect. I am glad to stand among those influences.
She draws him close again, briefly and firmly, then releases him enough to meet his eyes. The camp remains quiet, and her answer rests between them with the warmth of kinship.
“I drop to one knee, touching the earth between our feet and bring the dust on my fingertips to my brow, honouring her in the way a mother should. Biological, care taker, adoptive, teacher... The place of honour that all of these places hold deserve her to be honoured by my gesture regardless of the context. She has accepted my fondness and I accept hers in return. "You will always hold a place of honour in my heart, mother Thorne."”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +1)
Octavius drops to one knee between them and touches the earth. He lifts the dust to his brow, offering Serel the honor due to a mother, caretaker, adoptive kin, and teacher.

Octavius
You will always hold a place of honour in my heart, Mother Thorne.
He remains kneeling, head bowed for a breath before her. Rain whispers beyond the shelter, while the fire paints a soft rim along Serel's silver-threaded braid.

Serel Thorne
Then rise, my difficult son. I accept the honor, not as a crown above you, but as a place beside you.
Serel offers both hands and draws him gently upright. Her stern composure trembles into a small, shining smile, and she rests one palm against his brow where the dust remains.

Serel Thorne
I have taught you what I could, and I will keep teaching you when you permit it. But the heart you honor was always yours to shape.

Serel Thorne
Come, son. Sit with me through the rest of the watch, and let this place of honor be warm enough for two.
“Greenwardens are known for not being especially touchy feely. For taking 'years' to answer even the most simple question. But her reaction fills my heart with fondness and I cannot hold myself back from closing the few inches between us as a tight, fond, familial hug and using those few stolen seconds as a tight hug.”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Strength, rolled +1)

Octavius closes the few inches between them and folds Serel into a tight, fond embrace, holding her with the quiet certainty of a son claiming his mother.
For those stolen seconds, the Greenwarden's bow, the sleeping camp, and the rain-dark ridge all recede. Serel's cloak smells of wet fir and smoke beneath his cheek.

Serel Thorne
There you are, difficult son. I wondered whether Greenwarden training had stolen all your sense.
Serel embraces him just as firmly, one hand settling between his shoulders. Her familiar reserve remains, but her grip answers his affection without hesitation.

Serel Thorne
You may keep a few stolen seconds. Even wardens must sometimes remember that vows are carried by living hearts.
She releases him only when the watch requires her eyes again, leaving both hands briefly on his arms. The fire cracks softly, and the ridge remains peaceful.

Serel Thorne
Now sit beside me, son. We can guard the camp together, and you can tell me which lesson you believe you learned without me.
“I have to laugh at myself, put on the spot. It had taken some time to think up the first lesson I had learned that topped what I thought she knew. "Master I will need more time to answer that. I still think of everything I know as ... because you taught me'."”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +0)

Octavius laughs at himself, the sound escaping before he can shape an answer. His shoulders shake, and one heel nudges a fireward stone, sending a coal clicking across the damp earth.

Octavius
Master, I will need more time to answer that. I still think of everything I know as something you taught me.

Octavius
I may have learned a little on my own, but I could not have done so without you. And you know ten thousand years more than I ever will, so there is no point in peacocking about it.
The displaced coal spits a brief spark against Octavius's sleeve. He brushes it away before it catches, leaving a small scorched mark and no injury.

Serel Thorne
That is an honest answer, difficult son. It is also the first lesson you have named without pretending it stands apart from those who helped you learn.

Serel Thorne
Still, do not hide behind my many years. A teacher may show a path, but your feet chose where to place themselves.
Serel nudges the coal back toward the fire with her boot and resumes watching the dark slopes. Her smile remains, warm beneath the warden's patient composure.
“Fine, fine!" I feign defeat, though it's more polite than anything. "Why don't /you/ go find us something small and green-fat, so that I can make breakfast." I finally say, more to break the tension than anything. She knows my thoughts and now I know hers. No need to waste time on faffing about it.”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +0)

Octavius
Fine, fine! Why don't you go find us something small and green-fat, so I can make breakfast? No need to faff about it.
Octavius feigns defeat with a courteous bow of his head. Serel's answering smile deepens, and she rises, taking up her bow without disturbing the quiet watch.

Serel Thorne
Small and green-fat? Your woodland tongue grows stranger with every year. Very well, difficult son. I will find your breakfast.
Serel slips beyond the firelight and vanishes among the dripping firs. Her passage leaves scarcely a bent blade of grass, while Octavius keeps watch over the sleeping camp.
Before the eastern sky pales, Serel returns with two plump green-backed hill doves hanging from one hand. Their feathers are intact, and her bow remains dry beneath her cloak.

Serel Thorne
There. Small, green-fat, and acquired without waking Edrin or alarming the ridge. Your breakfast awaits the master cook.
She lays the birds beside Octavius's cooking things and settles near the coals again. The tension between them has thinned into familiar quiet, ready for morning work.
+ New Item Acquired
hill doves
“I use my gift to summon a pat of thick oil-butter, as well as a palmful of salt. By the time she returns with something, I will have the broad base of the cooking pan full of hot salted oil for whatever falls into it to fry.”
SUCCESS (Superb Crafting, rolled +2)

Octavius retrieves the broad cooking pan from beneath the shelter’s secured bundles, sets it over the rekindled coals, and checks its handle before touching the fire.
His gift answers cleanly. A thick pat of butter settles into the pan beside a palmful of salt, both appearing without smoke or ceremony.
The butter melts into a glossy pool, carrying the salt across the broad iron base. Octavius feeds the coals until the oil shimmers hot and ready.

Serel Thorne
Efficient, difficult son. I leave you with empty coals and return to find a breakfast worthy of a warden’s table.
Serel sets the two green-backed hill doves beside the pan. Their feathers remain intact, while the butter snaps softly around the first drops of moisture in the heated oil.

Edrin Vale
That smell could wake a dead road. Give me a moment to rouse Mara, and I will see whether Brindle has earned a share of the morning.
The camp stirs gently around the ready pan. Dawn pales the eastern ridge, and Octavius has hot salted butter waiting for whatever breakfast becomes.
“I am, honestly, startled that Edrin has woken up. We were certainly not even audible until recently... Until the part that was very personal. If Edrin heard that conversation, I'm not sure how I could speak about it in the future.”
SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +0)

Octavius stills beside the pan, visibly startled by Edrin’s voice. His hand tightens on the handle, and a bright spit of butter scorches his sleeve.
His gaze flicks toward Serel, then the shelter, measuring the distance and the quiet that had held between their personal words and breakfast.

Edrin Vale
I heard the coals, the pan, and Serel returning. Nothing before that, unless the ridge has learned to whisper.
Edrin emerges rubbing sleep from his eyes, his expression amused rather than knowing. He checks the mule, then glances at the scorched thread on Octavius’s sleeve.

Serel Thorne
He truly woke only when the butter began its argument with the pan. Your private watch remains private, difficult son.
The reassurance lands, though the burned sleeve remains a small, tangible price for the startled question that never quite became words.

Edrin Vale
Mara is waking. If there is some solemn warden matter I missed, I will preserve my ignorance until breakfast is served.
“"...Ranger Thorne," I refrain from using the more private title of mother.. but I am still uneasy in the moment. "You said you did not mind finding something for breakfast, if I made the pan ready?" We hadn't agreed to that, not ... -really-, but my face begged her to go along with it while I readied the pan to cook breakfast for everyone.”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +2)

Octavius
Ranger Thorne, you said you did not mind finding breakfast if I made the pan ready?
Octavius keeps his eyes on the buttered pan, face carefully solemn despite the unease tightening his posture. He readies the coals for everyone’s meal.

Serel Thorne
I did say that, difficult son. The arrangement was perfectly clear, even if neither of us spoke it aloud beforehand.
Serel accepts the offered framing without hesitation. She places the hill doves beside the pan and settles into the role of willing forager, her mouth twitching.

Edrin Vale
Then I am grateful for this carefully negotiated breakfast. Mara and I will contribute by not disturbing the master cook.
Mara Venn emerges beneath the shelter, fastening her cloak while Brindle noses toward the scent. Dawn brightens the ridge, and the camp gathers around Octavius’s pan.

Serel Thorne
Proceed, master cook. I will maintain that I found precisely what you requested, and you will maintain that this was our agreement.
“With both Mara Venn and Edrin slightly behind me, I give mother Seral a grateful smile, and as I move to add some salt to the melting oil butter grease in the pan, I gesture a bird-cant <Thank you, mother> before the others can see, even if they couldn't recognize it.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Stealth, rolled +0)
With Mara and Edrin slightly behind him, Octavius gives Serel a grateful smile and reaches for the salt beside the cooking things. Butter melts and shimmers in the pan.

Octavius
The salt is within reach.
He pinches a measured amount between his fingers, then signs a brief bird-Cant gesture toward Serel: Thank you, mother. His hand stays low, hidden from the others.
Salt scatters into the melting butter. The pan answers with a soft hiss, and the rich scent of hot fat spreads through the waking camp.

Serel Thorne
You are welcome, difficult son. Keep your eyes on the pan before your gratitude burns breakfast.

Edrin Vale
A wise warning. I have seen Octavius defeat bandits, roads, and hunger, but butter may yet prove his equal.
Serel's smile remains private beneath the pretense of culinary instruction. Octavius has salted the butter, and the two doves wait beside the ready pan.
“As I am stirring the oil-butter and a sprinkle of salt, I pull my wide, shallow-seeming bag in front of me and reach in just deep enough to hide the summoning of a small vial of dried rosemary. If they can't see it, they can't say it wasn't already in my lumpy, wide, bag.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Stealth, rolled +0)

Octavius sets the spoon against the pan and reaches beneath the secured cooking bundles. After a moment, he draws out his wide, shallow-seeming bag of holding.
He pulls the lumpy bag across his front, keeping its opening low behind the pan’s rising steam. Butter continues to shimmer over the coals.
His hand slips just inside. The bag’s magic answers without sound, placing a small vial of dried rosemary against his fingers.
Octavius withdraws the vial concealed in his palm, then tips the rosemary into the salted butter. Green needles scatter and release a sharp, woodland fragrance.

Serel Thorne
Rosemary, difficult son? A sensible improvement. I see you have learned at least one useful trick without me.

Edrin Vale
That scent promises a fine breakfast. Mara, wake Brindle if he begins claiming the pan for himself.
The empty vial disappears back into the bag before Octavius lowers it beside the bundles. The butter foams gently, fragrant and ready for the doves.
“Ranger Thorne," I say, signing quietly in front of myself to block the view, <mother please, are you so eager to make me beg you for my dignity?> "You said you were going to find some meat to add to my pan.. didn't you?"”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +0)

Octavius
Ranger Thorne, you said you were going to find some meat for my pan, didn’t you?
Octavius signs the rest quietly before himself, shielding the gesture from Edrin and Mara: Mother, must you make me beg for my dignity? His expression stays solemn, though his eyes gleam.

Serel Thorne
I did, difficult son. Two plump hill doves are waiting beside your pan, unless you have suddenly developed a preference for starving nobly.
Serel nudges the two green-backed doves closer with one finger. Their feathers remain intact, and the rosemary-scented butter foams warmly over the coals.

Edrin Vale
There is no need to beg. The evidence is plainly present, and I suspect Serel has already won this particular negotiation.

Mara Venn
The pan has meat, herbs, and butter. That seems a generous result for a request made with such ceremony.
Serel folds her arms, watching Octavius over the fragrant pan. Dawn strengthens across the ridge, and the camp waits for the master cook to begin.
“I had been so absorbed by watching my back that I failed to notice the two doves mother saral had brought. A strong flush fills my face and I hemm and haw about to cover my embarassment before declaring "Okay yes yes, I'm the silly goose." I say, bringing up what Seral had called me when I was still a child. "I'll handle breakfast only if you all go away and don't make me feel worse!" it sounds like a threat, but in spite of my embarrassment, the declaration is only for show and entertainment. There are far worse fates than 'looking a bit less serious'”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +1)

Octavius stares at the two doves as though they have appeared by sorcery. A strong flush rises across his face, and he hems and haws beside the steaming pan.

Octavius
Okay, yes, yes. I am the silly goose.
He lifts both hands in theatrical surrender, recalling Serel's childhood nickname. His stern expression collapses into embarrassed amusement despite his efforts to preserve it.

Octavius
I will handle breakfast, but only if you all go away and stop making me feel worse.

Serel Thorne
As you command, silly goose. We shall retreat several respectful paces and leave you to your dignity.
Serel ushers Edrin and Mara back from the pan with exaggerated solemnity. Edrin hides a grin, while Mara turns aside, mercifully pretending great interest in Brindle.

Edrin Vale
Of course. We would not dream of witnessing the master cook recover from such a devastating discovery.
“I give the lot of them a rude noise, my tongue sticking out far and a raspberry sound blown from it. "Go find a nice breeze, all of you." I demand with humorous falsehood in my voice. "If you're gonna be mean, then maybe I'll just make something -I- like, and the rest of you can suffer if you don't agree!" None of them will believe me, I am so dramatic about it.”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +2)

Octavius sticks out his tongue and blows a long raspberry toward the retreating company. The rude sound rolls across the camp, startling Brindle into an indignant snort.

Octavius
Go find a nice breeze, all of you. If you're going to be mean, maybe I'll make something I like, and the rest of you can suffer if you disagree!
He points toward the ridge with mock severity, then turns back to the pan as though preparing a private feast for one. His theatrical threat fools nobody.

Serel Thorne
Of course, silly goose. We shall suffer nobly, each of us pretending not to hope you make enough for everyone.

Edrin Vale
A cruel fate indeed. I will alert Mara that breakfast has become a matter of personal principle.

Mara Venn
I am certain your private meal will be unbearable, Octavius. Especially if you insist on eating both doves alone.
They retreat another few paces, still within easy speaking distance. Serel’s smile gives away the truth: the master cook may pretend at rebellion, but nobody expects him to leave them unfed.
“as soon as I catch Seral's eye, I sign <thank you> and move to begin stripping the doves for meat. Even with all my bluster, I did still promise a good breakfast for all. I won't shirk that. I know how to get the most out of a few fat birds, and we still have some leftover beans and my ability to summon seasonings. Spinach is a seasoning, and so is kale. I can bulk up this meal with 'seasonings' if I stretch my imagination.”
SUCCESS (Superb Crafting, rolled +4)

As soon as Octavius catches Serel’s eye, he signs thank you. He turns back to the pan, draws the doves close, and begins stripping them with practiced care.
He retrieves the remaining beans from Edrin’s covered provisions, then cleans the birds efficiently, preserving every useful piece. His weakened thumb slows no motion; experience supplies what dexterity cannot.

Serel Thorne
There is the master cook I remember. Bluster aside, you do know how to make a little food serve many.
Octavius folds the dove meat into the warmed beans and summons salt, rosemary, chopped spinach, and kale. The greens swell the meal without drowning the rich bird flavor.
He renders the bones and scraps into the pan’s fragrant juices, then folds everything together until the beans shine and the greens soften. The result fills four bowls generously.

Edrin Vale
That is not merely breakfast. That is provisioning with ambition. You have made yesterday’s scraps and two birds look like a proper table.
The meal is ready before the ridge fully brightens. Its savory steam carries downslope, and Brindle receives the clean trimmings, an unexpected favor that keeps him content and quiet.
“I can't help but show a laugh, though more humble and self conscious than anything. "You have humoured my being an ass with no social graces more than once." I look to Mara Venn, "You were honest with me when you didn't know me and I did not offer the same." I look to Seral. "You are my mentor. My teacher, and the only face that I think of when 'mother' comes to mind." I back away from the pot, positioning myself to give the three of them a deep bow that puts me on my knee. "I am grateful to all of you."”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +2)
Octavius laughs, but the sound is quieter than before, self-conscious rather than triumphant. He steps away from the pot, leaving the fragrant breakfast steaming between them.

Octavius
You have humoured my being an ass with no social graces more than once.

Octavius
Mara, you were honest with me when you did not know me, and I did not offer you the same.

Octavius
Serel, you are my mentor, my teacher, and the only face I think of when mother comes to mind.

Octavius
I am grateful to all of you.
Octavius lowers himself into a deep bow before the three of them, one knee touching the damp earth. His head remains bowed, and the gesture gives his gratitude its full weight.

Mara Venn
Then let my honesty be answered by yours from this morning onward. You have my respect, Octavius.

Serel Thorne
Rise, difficult son. I accept your gratitude, and I return it. You learned much from me, but you became this person by choosing what to do with it.
“Edrin.." I had not mentioned him yet. "Edrin, You have my gratitude as well. I have been alone for many years, to fulfill my vow to the Green. Meeting you showed me that being alone is not the vow i thought it was. I need to join you and see other people." I bow again just as deeply as I had for mother Seral. Ranger Thorne. He deserves the same respect, as an agent of the Green, even if he didn't know he was one.”
FAILURE (Fair Willpower, rolled +0)

Octavius
Edrin, you have my gratitude as well. I have been alone for years to fulfill my vow to the Green. Meeting you showed me solitude was not the vow. I need to join you and see other people.
Octavius bows as deeply before Edrin as he did before Serel, one knee touching the damp earth. He remains there, head lowered, offering the peddler equal honor.

Edrin Vale
Rise, friend. I accept your gratitude, but I am no agent of the Green. I sell goods, choose safer roads, and occasionally make poor judgments with confidence.

Edrin Vale
I cannot promise that joining me will teach you how to meet people. I can promise that Dunmere has a market, a reeve, and more honest introductions than this ridge can offer.
Edrin offers both hands and helps Octavius upright. His smile is fond, though uncertainty remains around the edges of the invitation.

Edrin Vale
Walk with me to Dunmere, then. Speak when you wish, listen when you do not, and let the town show you whether company can become a chosen road.

Serel Thorne
That is a sound opening, difficult son. Do not make Edrin carry the whole burden of your vow, but do accept the door he has placed before you.
“I am somewhat galled by the realization of the burden I've asked Edrin to bear, and I balk at it, babbling to retract it before he can accept fully. "Sir Edrin, My apologies. I will walk with you. I will cook for you in the evenings as promised. I will watch from above and behind as we decend, so that I can keep you as safe as I'm capable. This is the same agreement that you offered when you said you would assist me in finding buyers for my herbs and the sculpting stone."”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +2)

Octavius
Sir Edrin, my apologies. I will walk with you, cook for you in the evenings as promised, and watch from above and behind during our descent, keeping you as safe as I can. This is the agreement you offered when you promised to help me find buyers for my herbs and sculpting stone.
Octavius speaks quickly, retracting the broader burden before it can settle on Edrin's shoulders. His bow remains ready, but his posture turns toward the practical road they first chose together.

Edrin Vale
No apology is needed, friend. That agreement is clear, and I accept it gladly. You cook, scout, and watch the high ground; I handle the cart, the trade, and the roads I know.

Edrin Vale
Walk with me to Dunmere as Octavius, not as some burdened instrument of the Green. We will keep one another safe as circumstances allow, and neither of us need pretend at more.

Serel Thorne
Well corrected, difficult son. An offered door need not become a house you carry on your back. Keep the promise you made, and let the rest grow by choice.
Edrin squeezes Octavius's forearm, then turns toward the breakfast things and the waiting cart. Mara begins securing the bundles, while Serel watches with quiet approval as the agreement settles into its proper shape.

Mara Venn
Then Dunmere will gain a cook, a scout, and a very watchful escort. That sounds less like a burden and more like a fortunate bargain.
“I look over at Seral as she calls me 'difficult son' again, cracking a broad, somewhat smug, smile. "If you want to call me 'difficult' every time, should I call you 'angry' mother every time as well?"”
SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +0)

Octavius
If you want to call me difficult every time, should I call you angry mother every time as well?
Octavius turns toward Serel with a broad, somewhat smug smile. Around them, Edrin secures the cart and Mara checks the bundles, both plainly within earshot.

Serel Thorne
Angry mother? That is a bold title from a son who once argued with a willow stick.
Serel folds her arms, though the sternness in her face cannot conceal the amusement tugging at her mouth. The breakfast bowls wait beside the packed cart.

Edrin Vale
I recommend caution, Octavius. A difficult son may survive one nickname, but an angry mother sounds considerably more dangerous.

Serel Thorne
Very well, difficult son. Use that name once, and I will decide whether you have earned the right to repeat it. Now help Edrin with the cart.
Serel's smile finally breaks through her warden's composure. The teasing settles warmly among them, while the ridge road waits for their descent toward Dunmere.
