Breach in the Dark

The sniper rifle, pistol, ammunition, and flash grenade lie spread across the bench as the gun broker seals the transaction records. Behind her, the shielded cabinet locks with a heavy electronic clunk.

A brutal impact buckles the rear entrance. Red breach tones pulse through the room, and dust sifts from the ceiling as the door’s locking braces deform inward.

The Corporate Voice

The Corporate Voice

Darius Zane, surrender immediately. Place all weapons on the floor and step away from the broker.

Nyx Calder

Nyx Calder

That is Specter-linked. Four operators, maybe more, using corporate breach gear. They are not here for you alone.

The Gun Broker

The Gun Broker

The cabinet contains restricted hardware and identities. If they get inside, every independent buyer in this quarter becomes exposed.

Nyx Calder

Nyx Calder

They are prioritizing the cabinet. I cannot see its contents through the shield, but their command traffic calls it a recovery asset.

The gun broker reaches beneath the bench and kills the room’s green work lamps. Darkness folds around the weapons, the sealed cabinet, and the buckling entrance while breach metal screams again.

“Take stock of the situation. How many bodies there are and their location. You have the intention of fighting your way out of this, while protecting the broker. So the most likely option is the flash grenade and then strategic shots with between the pistol and the rifle. But first let's take a quick look of what the situation is.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Surveillance, rolled -3)

Taz goes still in the broker’s darkened room, letting augmented vision map heat, pressure, and vibration through the buckling rear entrance.

Taz

Taz

Two bodies inside: Taz and the broker. Four operators stack outside the rear door, with a fifth heat signature low behind their breach shield.

The four visible attackers wear Specter breach armor and carry compact rifles. Their shielded leader kneels behind the deformed door, while a second operator covers the cabinet wall.

The Gun Broker

The Gun Broker

I count four at the door. Your extra signature is behind the brace, waiting for us to bunch up.

Taz’s scan catches the arrangement, but a loose diagnostic arm clips the bench and gives one sharp metallic tap. Outside, the operators pause and adjust their aim.

Nyx Calder

Nyx Calder

You have their positions, but they heard the scan. Flash first, then take the shielded leader or the cabinet-side rifleman.

The pistol, sniper rifle, ammunition, and flash grenade remain within reach. The broker stays behind the bench, while the breach team prepares to force the entrance.

The Gun Broker

Taz holds position and narrows his augmented vision through the dark. Heat outlines four Specter operators, four adult human men in bulky dark breach armor with sealed helmets at the rear entrance, with a fifth body crouched low behind the breach shield.

The shielded leader occupies the center, one rifleman covers the cabinet wall, and two others bracket the doorway. Their muzzles angle inward toward the broker’s position.

The Gun Broker

The Gun Broker

The cabinet-side shooter has the cleanest line. If that person fires, the cabinet and I are both exposed.

The sniper rifle offers a controlled lane from the bench, while the pistol gives Taz faster movement in close quarters. The flash grenade can reach the stacked entrance.

The scan costs several seconds. Shield interference obscures the fifth operator’s weapon and exact posture, leaving that threat identified but not fully classified.

Nyx Calder

Nyx Calder

Confirmed: five bodies, all hostile. I still cannot resolve the shielded one, but the leader and cabinet-side rifleman are your priority targets.

The operators begin forcing the braces again. Taz has the room mapped, the broker’s position protected by the bench, and the flash grenade within immediate reach.

“Before you start taking action, say out loud, "Guess we'll see how well these things work." Shoot the cabinet-side rifleman first with the pistol to keep speed and mobility high. Then toss the flash grenade toward the rest as the distraction. You know what's about to happen so you intend to shot the rest after the flash”

Taz

Guess we'll see how well these things work.

Taz draws the discreet pistol and fires before the cabinet-side rifleman can shift. The round punches through his visor; he collapses against the cabinet, weapon clattering away.

With his off-hand, Taz snaps the flash grenade toward the stacked entrance. It skips beneath the shield and detonates in a hard white burst, swallowing the room in thunder and glare.

The broker ducks behind the bench. Outside, the shielded leader and two doorway operators stagger blind, their formation breaking as rifle muzzles swing wide.

Taz fires through the fading flash, controlled shots cutting across the entrance. The two bracketing operators drop, armor sparking, while the shielded leader folds behind his damaged brace.

The fifth operator rises into the muzzle lane, weapon still obscured by the shield. Taz fires twice; the figure jerks backward and goes still behind the breach gear.

The Gun Broker

The Gun Broker

Clear enough for me. The cabinet held. Take your rifle and move before every camera in the quarter wakes up.

“Run out the door yelling back to the broker "Thanks for the gear, works great so far" Start to run away from the broker's store and the scene and towards the west hopfully finding a way out of the district”

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +2)

Taz

Thanks for the gear, works great so far!

Taz holsters the pistol, slings the sniper rifle, and bolts through the broker’s rear exit. Spent casings glitter behind him as alarms begin spreading through the market quarter.

The Gun Broker

The Gun Broker

Try not to bring the whole district back here, Zane!

He runs west through service alleys and beneath humming transit conduits, boots hammering damp concrete. Market cameras lose him among steam vents, stacked crates, and shifting blue light.

Nyx Calder

Nyx Calder

You are clear of the broker’s perimeter. Keep west. There is an abandoned freight ramp ahead that exits the district into the outer industrial lanes.

Taz reaches the freight ramp and surges up its incline. Beyond the perimeter, the Black Iron District falls behind him in neon haze, while open industrial streets spread west beneath the rain.

Nyx Calder

Nyx Calder

You made it out. Specter is still searching the market, and they do not have your current position.

“Ask Nyx. "What's next? Okay, what do I need to do? What's next? We need to... We still need to get some of these details figured out. I need some time to regroup, stack up. I have an old spot that I used to do some thinking in. You think that'll give us... You think that's the best thing? Lie low, analyze the data, and then develop a plan while fully equipping up. Maybe take the train as part of the division? Get out into the public but covered up?"”

What's next? I need time to regroup, analyze the data, fully equip, and figure out the details. Is my old thinking spot best? Maybe take the train, covered, and disappear into the public.

Rain tracks down Taz's coat as he slows beyond the freight ramp. The sniper rifle remains secured beneath it, while Black Iron District recedes behind him in neon haze.

Nyx Calder

Nyx Calder

Yes. Use the old spot as your temporary command post. Lie low there, audit both evidence copies, and build the plan before touching Specter again.

Nyx Calder

Nyx Calder

Take the train. Public transit gives you cover, but do not travel in uniform or carry the rifle openly. I can arrange civilian layers and track cameras around the route.

Nyx pushes a transit map into Taz's ocular display. One line crosses the industrial lanes toward his old refuge, with several crowded transfers masking his movements.

Nyx Calder

Nyx Calder

Your order is simple: reach the old spot, secure the room, review Vale's chain and the BERSERKER files, then let me finish sourcing whatever equipment is missing.

Nyx Calder

Nyx Calder

You have the answer. Regroup there, use the train to blend into public traffic, analyze everything, and develop the next move fully equipped.

✓ Quest Accepted

Reach the old thinking spot

“Before getting onto the train toward your old spot, make sure the rifle and pistol is securly hidden. Button up your coat, and flip up your collar and sink your head low as you sit byyourself on the train”

SUCCESS (Mediocre Stealth, rolled +1)

Breach in the Dark

At the platform’s edge, Taz folds the sniper rifle tight beneath his coat, locks its sling against his leg, and seats the discreet pistol inside an inner holster.

He buttons the coat to the throat, flips up the collar, and lowers his head as the train arrives behind a wash of rain and brake-light glare.

The rifle stays concealed beneath the heavy coat, its stock pinned against the seat frame. The pistol remains secured beneath layered fabric, invisible to passing eyes.

Taz

Taz

The rifle is hidden. The pistol is secured. The train gives me cover.

Taz boards with the crowd, choosing an empty side section. He keeps his shoulders rounded, collar high, and gaze lowered as the doors seal.

A sling buckle taps the seat frame during acceleration, sharp enough to draw one passenger, a young adult woman with a slim build, dark curly hair, and a rust-colored raincoat’s glance before the train plunges into the tunnel.

The glance passes, but a carriage camera catches the brief metallic movement. Taz remains alone, weapons hidden, while the train carries him toward his old spot.

“Keep your head down toward the floor the whole time but while maintaining situational awareness just in case, and get off the train when at the stop one away from your location. You'll walk to your spot but take winding paths so best not be tracked to it.”

SUCCESS (Mediocre Stealth, rolled +1)

Taz keeps his head angled toward the train floor, reading reflections in the dark window and tracking footsteps through vibration, airflow, and carriage movement.

At the stop before his destination, he rises with the crowd and exits without lifting his gaze. A shoulder seam brushes the doorframe, producing one brief scrape.

Nyx Calder

Nyx Calder

You are off one stop early. The scrape registered on the carriage microphone, but no camera held your face.

Taz leaves the platform with the commuters, crosses through a service arcade, and turns into a rain-darkened commercial lane instead of taking the direct street.

He loops around a loading court, changes direction beneath an elevated rail line, and crosses two crowded intersections before entering older residential blocks.

Nyx Calder

Nyx Calder

Your route is irregular enough to break the obvious track. I am watching public feeds, but the train audio trace remains attached to your departure.

After several winding turns, Taz reaches his old spot through a rear access lane. The concealed entrance opens, and he slips inside with the rifle and pistol still hidden.
