Carlotta is still too close to Ma's satchel when the square shifts. A hush rolls outward as a colossal figure stoops under the archway, and even the guards forget to breathe.

Unrok straightens just enough to loom over the gate, scar tissue crossing his arms and face like old rope burns. His gaze drops to Ma, then to the food in his hands.

Unrok

Unrok

That smells better than fight-bread. You carrying enough to share?

Carlotta slows, measuring the giant, then glances back at Ma's satchel with a hungry, undecided look. Garth shifts his quarterstaff between her and Ma without taking his eyes off Unrok.

Carlotta Smit

Big fellows get fed first now? I should have come taller.

The Herald

The Herald

This square is under law. No grabbing, no feuding, no theft.

Unrok lowers one massive hand, open and patient, as if waiting for Ma's answer to decide whether the gate stays quiet or becomes trouble.

Ma lowers the offered food into Unrok’s waiting palm, careful and plain about it. The giant’s fingers close around it with surprising gentleness, and the square loosens by a breath.

Unrok

Unrok

That is fair. You do not make a big show of it.

He breaks a piece, then pauses, not eating yet. The effort of holding back is visible in the set of his jaw.

Unrok

Unrok

I am far from road and work. Food buys me a little patience.

Ma’s satchel gives a soft, telling shift at his side as he spends from it. Carlotta’s stare fixes on the bag again, but she stays where she is.

Garth Braun

Garth Braun

Say the terms cleanly, giant. If this is trade, we keep it trade.

Unrok

Unrok

Then speak your terms, small guard. I will hear them with open hands.

The Herald watches from above, silent for once, while the basket on the cart knocks again in the background.

Ma opens his satchel with a practiced touch. This time, the spell answers in a soft puff of sugar-scented light, and a small heap of candy settles into his palm like bright pebbles.

The satchel tugs dry at his side, not torn, but clearly spent for the moment. A few sweet crumbs dust his fingers.

Unrok

Unrok

That is a kinder trick than hunger deserves.

Garth Braun

Garth Braun

Sweetness makes honest trade easier. I will not argue with that.

Unrok weighs one candy in his huge hand, then looks past the square to the stone arch and the road beyond it, as if measuring his next step against the taste of it.

Unrok

Unrok

I have work far from here, and little patience left. If I eat, I can talk. If I talk, we can name terms.

Carlotta stays at the edge of reach, eyes fixed on the satchel and the new candy, while the basket on the cart gives another patient knock under the balcony.

The Herald

The Herald

Then speak plainly, all of you. What passage, and what share, keeps this square lawful?

Ma turns the satchel mouth inward and draws a careful sign through the air. A pale ripple answers, and a wooden bowl appears in his palm, packed with steaming travel cakes stamped with little knots of sugar.

The satchel gives a dry shiver. A whisper of blue smoke leaks from the seam, then fades, leaving the bag lighter and strangely warm against Ma’s hip.

Unrok

Unrok

A tool that feeds a crowd. That is worth speaking over.

Garth Braun

Garth Braun

Good. Provision first, then passage. That is honest enough for a square like this.

Carlotta’s gaze snaps from the cakes to the satchel, and she leans in before catching herself. Above them, the basket on the cart knocks once, hard enough to turn heads.

The Herald

The Herald

State your share, and state your road. If the giant moves through Manvilos, it must be on lawful terms.

Unrok lowers one huge hand over the new food, waiting, while the square quiets around the demand for an answer.

The square darkens by degrees, as if a cloud has slipped over the sun. Unrok lifts his head toward the dimming sky, then back to Ma, waiting through the shift.

The Herald

The Herald

Night comes. If trade is to continue, speak quickly.

Carlotta keeps her eyes on the satchel, but even she pauses at the change of light. The basket on the cart gives one last muffled knock, then stills.

Ma lowers his eyes to the paper, but the fading light and cramped lettering turn the lines into a blur. The words about North Mai and the shattered borders swim together, then slip apart.

Ma

Ma

The numbers are too cramped to hold.

He shifts the sheet nearer his face. The ink smears with shadow instead of settling into sense, and the page shows only fragments, 50 warloads, 23 countrys, 90 citystates, 17 city blocks.

The Herald

The Herald

Reading in the square will not make the laws gentler.

The Herald lifts a hand toward the paper, not taking it, just pinning the moment in place. Around him, the square waits, and the cart basket stays silent.

Unrok

Unrok

If the paper decides nothing, then I still need a road.

Carlotta's gaze stays fixed on Ma's satchel, sharp as a hook in the darkening square, while the wind nudges the paper edge against his fingers.

Ma finally makes out the law’s sense. It is no tally of shattered lands, but a grim notice of borders folded into rule, and the figures are counts of civic divisions, not nations born from ruin.

Ma

Ma

The page says less than it first seems.

The meaning settles in, but the cramped ink costs him, his eyes watering against the dark. One thumb slips on the paper edge and leaves a smudge across the final line.

The Herald

The Herald

Well? Speak plain, before the wind steals the rest.

Unrok

Unrok

If he has the numbers, then he has the road inside the law.

Carlotta does not look away from the satchel. The cart basket gives one dry knock from under the cloth, then falls still again.

The square waits on Ma’s answer, and the paper in his hands now reads clear enough to act on.

undefined / undefined

The Herald snatches the page, squints at the smudge, and the sternness on his face thins into alarm. Outside the square, a horn sounds from the gate, low and urgent.

The Herald

The Herald

By law, no giant passes empty-handed, and no gate stands open for a hungry man. There is a holding pen at the north wall, if the town must keep him.

Unrok

Unrok

I do not want a pen. I want bread, and a road that does not end in a spear line.

Carlotta’s gaze flicks once to the cart, then to Ma’s satchel, as if weighing two prizes at once. The basket under the cloth gives another quick knock, louder this time, and the wind tugs the covering loose at one corner.

The Herald

The Herald

Ma, the square has a new problem. If you are taking that giant through, speak now. If not, the north gate answers to me.
