The cavern bucks like a wounded beast. Red drops through a torn shelf of stone and lands hard in a lower chamber, half-lit by pale mineral veins. Dust boils up around him. Across the new chasm, the Captain and Chieftain are cut off, their shapes stark against the broken edge.
Sable lands nearby in a low, rolling crouch, eyes already scanning the dark. From deeper shadow comes a slow, guttural growl, low enough to rattle the teeth.

Sable
Easy. Something lives down here.
A shape shifts in the gloom, not yet fully seen, but broad and watchful. On the far lip, the Captain steadies himself while the Chieftain tests the broken edge for a crossing.

The Stranger
You three make a loud entrance. This pit has not been empty for long.

Red
Red: Show yourself.

The Stranger
I am called Brusk. I keep my distance, and I expect the same.
Brusk steps into the mineral glow at last, lean and scarred, with a bone-tipped spear held loose but ready. The growl answers from behind him, closer now, as if something larger is circling in the dark.

Survive the predator in the dark
“I keep low and back toward Brusk”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -1)
Red keeps low and gives ground, sliding back through the mineral glow. The spear point in Brusk’s hand stays trained on him, but the gap between them shrinks to a fighting distance.

Brusk
Easy. You are choosing my side of the dark.
The floor shivers again. Dust trickles from the ceiling in thin streams, and the growl answers from somewhere behind Brusk, closer than before.

Sable
There. By the wall.
Sable points toward a narrow cut in the stone, an old worked groove half hidden in shadow. It vanishes into a slit just wide enough for a body to force through.

Brusk
If that thing rushes, the spear will not be enough.
Across the chasm, the Captain and the Chieftain brace at the broken lip, both watching Red and Brusk for a sign. The unseen predator keeps circling, and the dark waits for someone to move first.
“I duck into the wall cut”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -2)

Red dips hard and slips into the wall cut, shoulders scraping old stone as he vanishes from the spear line. The slit swallows him half a breath before Brusk can drive the point through the opening.
Inside, the passage is cramped and cold, the worked groove running under Red’s hand like a mason’s guide. He lands low on gritty stone, alive and hidden, but the scrape of his armor rings faintly in the dark.

Brusk
Move. I will not be bait for what follows you.
A heavy thump answers from the chamber behind, then a wet hiss of breath close to the slit. Dust shakes loose in a thin veil, and something large brushes the outer wall.

Sable
Good. Keep low. Do not make it choose the opening.
From the chasm mouth, the Captain’s voice cuts thin and distant, urgent but held in check by distance. The groove continues into blackness ahead of Red, just wide enough to crawl, and the unseen thing outside tests the stone with a low, hungry scrape.
“I address Brusk directly with a hiss: "What is this beast? If we worked together could we defeat it?"”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled -1)

Red keeps his voice low, and the cramped cut carries it to Brusk in a hard whisper. The scarred man lowers his spear a finger, not in trust, but in attention.

Red
What is this beast? If we work together, can we kill it?

Brusk
I do not know its name. I know the sound it makes when it smells blood, and I know it waits to take one of us alone.

Sable
Then do not offer it a lone target. It favors the dark, the gap, the mistake.
Red’s words buy the opening he wants. Brusk shifts closer to the slit, jaw set, and starts to angle his spear for a shared strike. But the effort costs Red, a sharp sting runs through his scraped shoulder, and cold grit spills down his back as the wall trembles again.

Brusk
If it comes through that opening, I strike high. You take the body.

Sable
And if it bolts for the chamber, I will call it. Keep your footing.
From beyond the slit comes a long, wet drag of breath, then silence, as if the thing is listening to them decide.
“I strike when it enters the slit”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -2)

The beast forces its broad head and shoulders into the slit. Red waits until the stone nearly brushes its hide, then drives his weapon into the entering mass.
The strike lands hard enough to twist the creature sideways and halt its rush. Its claws scrape sparks from the worked groove as it recoils, snarling into the cramped passage.

Brusk
Now! Keep it there!
Brusk thrusts over Red’s shoulder, forcing the beast back from the opening. Sable calls from the chamber, and the creature turns away rather than press into the crossed weapons.

Sable
Good. It knows this gap is no longer free meat. Do not chase it into the dark.
The cost arrives with the victory: the beast’s wrenching retreat tears Red’s scraped shoulder against the stone, reopening the injury and numbing his arm. His blow has bought the passage, but blood marks the groove.

Brusk
You hit like a falling gate. Bind that shoulder, or the next strike will cost more than blood.
