Red stumbles as the salt crust gives way. The fissure swallows the duel ground, and the whole line is forced backward into a yawning cavern mouth, coughing white dust into the air.
Below, a vast salt-lit chamber opens in jagged tiers. Pale crystals jut from black stone, and a cold wind rises from the depths, carrying the stink of damp earth and ancient rot.

The Captain
Fall back in order! Keep your feet, or the hole takes you!

The Chieftain
No retreat. Down there, we finish this.
The barbarian front hesitates at the edge, but a few warriors hammer their spears and press toward the opening, daring the mercenaries to break.

Sable
Then let the deep judge us all.
A hooded stranger emerges from the drifting dust on the cavern ledge, one hand raised toward the fissure as if greeting it. The salt wall shivers, and loose stone begins to rain into the dark.
Red lands hard on a narrow shelf of rock above the abyss, with the Captain nearby and the Chieftain across the gap. Behind them, both armies bunch up at the edge, straining to see whether the barbarians rally or the earth swallows them first.

“I grab the mercenary captain and use my strength to throw him back up to his men”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -3)

Red snatches the Captain by the harness and heaves. The man slams onto the higher ledge among his own troops, safe but winded.

The Captain
Ha. Good arms, Red. Keep moving, the stone is still giving way!
A crack snaps under Red's boots as the shelf sheds a slab into the dark below. Salt dust bursts up around his knees.

The Chieftain
Enough. The chasm takes no tribe. Hold your blades.
On the far side, the barbarians check their rush. Mercenaries and raiders alike edge back from the lip, staring into the same black drop.

Sable
Good. Let the weak fear the deep. Now choose who climbs and who falls.
The Captain reaches down toward Red with one hand, while the Chieftain keeps his axe low, waiting for the next move.
“I turn and address the hooded figure directly, uncertain but unwavering: "Who are you? What do you want with us?"”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +0)

Red
Who are you? What do you want with us?

Sable
I am the hand that opens the buried way. I want a witness who can still stand when the stone decides.

The Captain
Red, do not trust them, but listen. We need a path before this shelf takes us all.

The Chieftain
Aye. My blade is low because the ground has made allies of fools. For now.

Sable
Then hear the truth. I did not drop you here to kill one another. I dropped you here to see who yields first to the dark.

The Captain
Safe words for a rotten place. Fine. Name yourself, hooded one, or I call you trickster and be done with it.

Sable
Call me Sable, if a name helps you breathe easier. Climb together, and the cavern lets you pass.
✓ Quest Accepted
Climb together out of the cavern
− Scene Quest Removed
Survive the cavern collapse
“I climb with the Captain and Chieftain”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

Red climbs. Salt grit bites his palms, boots finding cracks in the trembling shelf as the Captain and the Chieftain move with him, each man choosing the same narrow track. The abyss yawns below, but the ledge holds long enough for one hard pull after another.
The Captain hauls himself up first, sword tucked tight against his side, while the Chieftain braces a forearm against the rock and swings his axe clear of the drop. Their old hostility stays sheathed for the moment, buried under the need to keep breathing.

Sable
Good. Keep your feet where the stone is honest.
A cracking sheet of salt breaks free behind them and vanishes into the dark. The sound rolls upward, then fades into the cavern’s throat as the three of them gain the higher shelf.

The Captain
Move. If this place wants a sacrifice, let it be the floor behind us.

The Chieftain
A fair bargain. I will not die for a bad joke in the stone.
Sable turns toward a slanting passage cut into the far wall, one hand raised in a silent command. It looks climbable, but only if Red follows now.
“I follow Sable into the passage”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +3)

Red commits to the slanting cut in the wall, and the passage takes his weight without complaint. Sable slips in ahead, cloak brushing salt from the lip, while the Captain and the Chieftain hold on the shelf behind him, watching the dark mouth swallow the first steps.
Inside, the stone narrows fast. Red ducks under a rib of rock, boots scraping damp crystal, and finds the corridor opening into a higher seam of cave air that tastes faintly of water instead of dust.

Sable
Good. This way holds.
Sable lowers the hand they had raised as a warning and uses it to brush salt from a shallow groove in the wall. The groove is old, worked by more than one hand, and it points upward like an arrow cut by a patient mason.
The Captain’s boots scuff at the threshold behind them, and the Chieftain’s axe head catches a pale glint from somewhere deeper in the passage. Neither man speaks, but both follow without protest.

The Chieftain
A climb, then. Better than waiting for the stone to choose.
Red reaches the first bend and sees it, a narrow stair of broken rock climbing out of the seam, dry and solid where the shelf below was failing. Above it, a weak shaft of light leaks through cracks in the ceiling, enough to guide the next ascent.
“I climb the broken stone stair”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

Red plants a boot on the first broken step and climbs. The stone holds, dry and rough under his weight, and the stair carries him higher into the seam of air and light.
Below him, the Captain eases forward to the passage mouth, while the Chieftain follows with his axe low and his shoulders still tight from the truce. Neither man breaks the silence.

Sable
Keep left. The ceiling thins there.
Red reaches the upper bend and finds the shaft of light falling across a ledge just above his head. Dust sparks in it like silver ash.
The old stair ends there, but the climb does not. A handhold opens beside the lit crack, and the route continues upward, narrow and certain.

The Chieftain
Your stone is kinder than mine.
Red gets a solid grip and pulls himself onto the higher ledge, out of the worst of the drop. The cavern yawns below, but the path ahead is real.
“I keep climbing with Sable”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +3)

Red climbs after Sable, hand over hand, and the narrow route answers with steady stone instead of crumble. The ledge widens into a slanting shelf bathed in the shaft of light.

Sable
There. The groove keeps going. Somebody marked this way for climbers, not for tomb raiders.
He plants a boot beside the ancient cut and hauls himself up beside them. The old stone pattern shows clear now, a guide line etched toward a brighter fissure overhead.

Sable
Not a dead end. Not tonight.
Below, the Captain and the Chieftain pause at the passage mouth, both looking up as the shelf above them steadies under Red's weight. Dust slides off the edge, but the route holds.

The Chieftain
Your climb has the favor of old hands. Take the next reach first.
Sable moves on, and Red follows into the lighted gap. Ahead, the stair line breaks cleanly toward the upper route, while behind them the abyss remains cut off and helpless.
“I keep climbing with Sable”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled -1)

Red keeps climbing with Sable, boots finding the old cuts in the stone. The shelf gives way to a higher run of steps, and the cavern air grows thinner and drier.
The passage widens in a wash of pale light. Below, the Captain and the Chieftain remain where the climb narrows, both forced to watch the same path Red takes.

Sable
Good. Keep your hands on the groove, the stone is still kind here.
Red reaches the upper lip of the stair line, and the route ahead opens into a clear ledge beyond the worst of the drop. Dust skitters off into the darkness behind him.

The Chieftain
That is the last blind reach. Move, and I will follow.
Sable turns at the top and looks back over the ledge, measuring the others with a cool, satisfied stillness. The climb has changed the field, the cavern no longer feels like a trap, only a difficult road.
“I keep climbing with Sable and ask him: "Where are you taking us?"”
SUCCESS (Good Health, rolled -1)
Red climbs at Sable’s heel, and the ledge gives way to a narrow landing washed in pale stone-light. The climb is done for the moment, but the route still twists upward.

Red
Where are you taking us?

Sable
Up to the old ventways, if they still breathe. There is a way out above this cavern, and I mean to find it before the stone decides for us.
Sable glances back at the Captain and the Chieftain below, then hooks a hand on the groove cut into the wall. The question seems to settle the air, not with danger, but with purpose.

The Chieftain
If there is a path, we take it together. I do not care whose stones these are.

The Captain
Agreed. For now, we climb as one company.
Sable gives a small, satisfied nod and starts upward again, leading the way with measured patience. Behind him, the truce holds, and the cavern becomes less a battlefield than a shared passage.
“I keep climbing with Sable”
SUCCESS (Good Health, rolled -1)

Red climbs in Sable’s wake, boots scraping ancient stone as the passage steepens. The cavern’s weight stays below him, farther away with every rung and ledge.
Sable pauses just long enough to hook fingers into a crack and glance back. Ahead, the stair line narrows into a clean cut in the rock, marked by old hands and older intent.

Red
The climb is holding.
Below, the Captain and the Chieftain shift onto the steps in turn, their truce still intact. The shared ascent becomes real work now, not talk.

Sable
Keep your weight close to the wall. The old builders were clever, but they liked height almost as much as gravity does.
Red gains the next shelf beside Sable, reaching the same level at last. Dust drifts from the lip above, and the pale shaft of light widens into a visible exit seam.

The Chieftain
Good. Let this be remembered, then. We climbed together.
The route ahead opens into a tighter, brighter throat of stone, but the final rise still waits out of sight.
“I keep climbing with Sable”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

Red keeps climbing with Sable, shoulder to stone, boots finding the old cuts without hesitation. The passage accepts him, and the narrow throat of rock opens to a cleaner ledge above.
Dust spills from the lip overhead as Red pulls through, and the brighter seam of daylight settles into a real exit split in the cavern wall. The abyss is now behind him, not below his feet.

Sable
There. That is the way out.
Below, the Captain and the Chieftain slow on the steps, both looking up at the same opening. The truce is no longer a promise, it is the only reason all of them are still moving.

The Chieftain
Then we finish this ascent together.
A thin crack of light widens at the top seam, but the final rise still bends out of sight. Sable turns toward it, waiting for Red to lead on or signal the others.
“I lead us up through the exit”
FAILURE (Good Agility, rolled -4)

Red gets two boots onto the lip, but the stone shivers under him. A ribbon of dust pours from above, and the opening pinches tight with a groan of grinding rock.
He hauls harder, then the edge shears. Loose saltstone skates away from his grip and clatters down into the dark.

Sable
Wait. The seam is collapsing.
The Captain stops below, one hand up to shield his face as falling grit spits from the crack. The Chieftain plants his feet on the stairs, eyes fixed on the narrowing exit.

The Chieftain
We do not win by dying at the threshold.
A slab shifts overhead with a dry roar, sealing part of the light and leaving only a jagged slit, too thin for a clean climb.

Sable
One of us has to brace it, or we crawl back and find another way.
“I brace the seam so they can climb”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +0)

Red jams both forearms against the stone lip and heaves. The seam answers with a bitter grind, then holds, just enough to bite back the collapse.
Dust still rains, but the jagged slit stops shrinking. A handspan of passage opens where there was none, and the shaft of light steadies on Red's shoulders.

Sable
There. Keep it there.
The Captain surges up first, boots scraping stone as he reaches for the new gap. The Chieftain moves after him without a word, bound by the same narrow mercy.
One by one, they climb through Red's brace and vanish above the lip. The cavern below them takes their weight, but the opening stays open.

The Captain
Red, hold another breath. I am through.
The last of the collapse settles into a shuddering hush. Ahead, the way up is clear for the first time, and behind them the abyss is no longer a threat, only a drop.
“I keep bracing until everyone else is through, prioritizing their well being over my own”
SUCCESS (Good Health, rolled +0)

Red keeps the stone bite under his forearms as the Captain’s boots vanish over the lip. His shoulders shake once, but the seam stays open.
The Chieftain follows, gripping the rough edge and hauling himself through the slit with a grunt. A rake of stone scrapes Red’s bracers, and blood wets one wrist.
Above, the last of the dust spills away into the shaft of light. The passage holds, narrow and ugly, but it holds.

The Captain
Hold on a moment longer, Red. I am clear.

The Chieftain
Your strength has bought us life. I do not forget it.

Red
The edge is cutting deep.
Then the strain shifts. The stone settles into its new shape, and Red’s brace is no longer needed. The opening stays fixed, leaving him free to let go or climb after them.
“I pause and glance at Sable, waiting to see what his next move is. "What next, my friend?" I say, seeking his direction”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +0)

Red eases his forearms off the seam and lets the stone take its own shape. The passage stays fixed.

Red
What next, my friend?
Sable steps closer to the lip, hood angled toward the shaft of light. Dust clings to their sleeves, but their voice stays calm.

Sable
We move while the rock is honest. No heroics, just careful feet.
The Captain rests a hand on the wall and watches Red with plain respect. The Chieftain gives a short nod, still breathing hard from the climb.

The Chieftain
Your strength carried the truce across the gap. I would keep it intact a little longer.
Sable glances between the two men, then back to Red, as if weighing him like part of the company now.

Sable
If we are names to each other now, then speak plainly. Red, do you climb with us, or lead?
“I climb with Sable and the others”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled -1)

Red takes Sable’s offered line and climbs. His boot skids on grit, then finds purchase, and the cut wrist bites once against the stone before he hauls himself up beside the opening.
The Captain reaches down to steady Red’s shoulder, then lets go as soon as he is clear. The Chieftain shifts back to make room, his truce-held warriors and mercenaries both watching the same narrow ledge.
A dry crack snaps from below. Pebbles rattle into the dark shaft, but the seam holds this time, sealed behind them like a scar of old craft.

Sable
There. Up and alive. That is the bargain honored.

The Chieftain
Then we keep walking until the mountain stops testing us.
Red reaches the upper landing with the others. The climb is done, but the stone underfoot trembles once more, and the only way ahead is the slanting corridor beyond Sable’s hooded arm.

Sable
Choose your footing, all of you. We move together, or we do not move at all.
