Rain ticks on the archives roof as the Guard pushes open the heavy door. Warm lantern light gives way to cold dust, rows of black timber shelves, and the dry smell of old parchment.
Torin Highfoot steps inside with Kaelith at his side, boots quiet on the stone. The Guard shuts the door behind them, and the rain fades to a muffled hiss.

The Guard
No more tricks. If you have evidence hidden, Kaelith, you bring it out now.

Kaelith
This place was not meant for me to breathe in.
Kaelith reaches into his coat and draws out a folded strip of singed cloth, then a thin packet wrapped in waxed leather. Ash flecks the edges as he lays them on the archivist’s table.
The Guard leans in, but Torin catches a second mark on the packet, a careful seal scratched with a signet. Whatever Elira sent, it was hidden for a reason.

Learn who set Elira’s warning in motion
“I reach out to examine the signet seal on the waxed packet.”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +0)

Torin reaches for the waxed packet, and the Guard stills, watching the movement like it might be a lie. Dust clings to the seal as Torin turns it under the lantern light.

Torin Highfoot
The signet is a reed leaf over a star, pressed hard into green wax.
The mark is fresh enough to hold its edges. Not an archive seal, not a watchman’s. Someone wanted this hidden before it ever reached a shelf.

Kaelith
Elira set that on the road with shaking hands. She said if the wrong eyes found it, Greave would vanish with the truth.
The Guard’s gaze snaps from the seal to Kaelith, then to the packet, as if the wax itself has begun to accuse him. He reaches for the leather wrapping, but stops short of touching it.

The Guard
Then we open it here. If this names Greave, we keep it. If it names a traitor, I want that too.
Torin has the seal in full view now, and beyond the table, the archive door gives a soft creak from the rain-soaked hall.
“I ask who else knows this seal”
SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +0)

Torin Highfoot
Who else knows that seal?
The Guard’s hand drops from the packet, and his eyes narrow on the wax instead of on Torin.

The Guard
A few clerks, if they ever saw it close. Maybe the reeve’s scribe. Anyone tied to old land records would notice the reed leaf and star.

Kaelith
Not many. Elira hid it because she feared a court copy. She said one magistrate in the next county would know it at a glance.
The Guard reaches past the packet and pulls a chained ledger toward him, flipping to a page marked with a faded reed leaf in the margin. Dust rises as the archive gives up its secret.

The Guard
There. This mark appears in the land transfer index, and only once. If someone follows Greave, they’ll follow the paper trail too.
He slides the ledger closer to Torin, but keeps one hand on the page, ready to close it if anyone else comes through the creaking door.
“I read the ledger entry beside the reed leaf”
SUCCESS (Great Reasoning, rolled +1)

Torin leans over the ledger and reads the faded line beside the reed leaf. The entry names a grain haul, then a private transfer to a riverside holding, sealed under a clerk’s cipher.

Torin Highfoot
That cipher is fresh enough to matter.
The Guard’s thumb tightens on the page while Torin traces the margin marks. A second note sits beneath the first, half-hidden in the binding, and it points to a handoff at dusk.

The Guard
Greave’s trail runs through the old records, just as I thought. This ledger gives us the date, the place, and the clerk who touched it.

Kaelith
Then Elira was right. She meant this packet to survive long enough to name who moved it.
The Guard turns one page farther and freezes. A fresh smudge breaks the dust near the reed leaf, as if someone else has handled the book very recently.
He looks up at the creaking archive door, keeping the ledger open with one hand and the packet pinned beneath the other. Someone else is close enough to know they have been found.

“I check the fresh smudge by the margin”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled -2)

Torin lifts the margin with two fingers and catches the smudge in the lantern glow. It is not dust at all, but a thumbprint dragged through wet ink, leaving a crescent of green-gray clay on the paper.

Torin Highfoot
Clay from a riverbank. Fresh.
Under the print, a tiny clerk’s mark shows through where the page was pressed hard against another sheet. The impression matches the seal work on the packet beside the ledger.

The Guard
Someone handled both after they were filed.
Kaelith goes still, then reaches for the singed cloth scrap. The ash on it flakes onto his knuckles as he turns it over, and a folded corner opens to reveal a second, hidden notch cut in the weave.

Kaelith
Elira marked this twice. One path for the ledger, one for the hand that would come looking.
The Guard pulls the ledger closer, face tightening as he sees the fresh smear lead off the page toward the aisle. Somewhere in the dark hall outside, a floorboard gives under careful weight.
“I check the hall for the intruder”
SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +3)

Torin slips from the table and into the aisle, quiet as a shadow between shelves. The hall beyond the archives door is empty now, but the trail is not, damp clay specks marking the boards in a thin line.

Torin Highfoot
The print keeps going.
He follows it to the threshold and finds the door latch smeared with the same green-gray clay, fresh enough to glisten. The smear breaks where someone pulled away fast, and beneath it a narrow scrape shows the wood was pried recently.
Torin catches the shape of a retreating figure at the far end of the hall, half-lost between lamp shadows and stacked crates. Whoever it is, they are already moving, and they left the archive door ajar behind them.

The Guard
There. Did you see them?
At Torin's feet, a dropped ribbon of reed-green seal wax lies crushed into the boards, and next to it a waxed packet corner peeks from under a loose ledger cart, exposed by the rush. The paper trail is now in hand, if he takes it.
The Guard squares his shoulders behind Torin, staring down the hall while Kaelith leans in from the table, pale and intent, as the silence waits for Torin's answer and next move.
“I take the waxed packet corner”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +0)
Torin lowers to one knee and slides the ledger cart just enough to reach beneath it. The waxed corner comes free with a soft crackle, sticky with dust and old paper fibers.

Torin Highfoot
The packet is intact.
He draws it into his hand, and the reed-green seal catches the lamplight. The clay on the floor matches the smear at the latch, as if whoever touched this meant to keep it hidden and moving.

The Guard
Careful. Don’t tear it yet.
Kaelith straightens from the table, eyes fixed on the packet corner now in Torin’s grasp. For the first time, the worry in his face gives way to recognition.

Kaelith
That seal, yes. Elira used it for the handoff. The paper trail starts here, with Greave's mark.
The Guard shifts closer, one hand already extended for the find, while the open doorway keeps the hall in view behind them. Someone out there knows the archives are being searched, and the next choice is whether to open the packet now or move before they return.
