Interrupted in the Jail Office

The door bangs wide, and lantern light spills over the cramped office. A weary guard freezes in the threshold, taking in Torin, the stranger, and the silver locket on the desk.

The Guard

The Guard

What in ash is going on in here?

The stranger lifts both hands a little, keeping his body between the guard and the desk. His guilt-rimmed face tightens, but he does not reach for any weapon.

Kaelith

Kaelith

Nothing illegal, just a talk that turned poorly. I mean to leave it quiet.

The Guard

The Guard

Quiet ends when I find strangers in my office after dark. State your business, both of you.

Torin’s locket lies open in plain view, its engraved face catching the lantern glow. The guard’s eyes flick to it, then back to Torin, suspicion hardening his stance.

The Guard

The Guard

And tell me why that trinket is on my desk.

Learn the truth about Elira

Tell the guard the locket is a family heirloom I am here to reclaim.

SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +2)

Torin Highfoot

Torin Highfoot

That locket is mine. My family wore it before the fire, and I am here to take it back.

The guard’s stare drops to the engraved face, then climbs to Torin’s. Suspicion does not leave him, but it shifts, troubled by the claim.

Kaelith

Kaelith

So that is the shape of it. He remembers the crest.

The Guard

The Guard

A family heirloom, is it? Then you should have led with that, not come skulking into my office like a thief.

The stranger lowers one hand to the desk, palm flat beside the open locket, as if anchoring himself to the truth of it.

Kaelith

Kaelith

He is telling the truth. I brought it because it survived where others did not. Elira asked me to keep it safe.

That name hangs in the lantern light. The guard notices Torin’s reaction, and the office goes very still.

I reach for the locket as I ask information about Elira

SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +1)

Torin’s fingers close around the silver locket and lift it cleanly from the desk. The engraved farmstead catches the lantern glow as the guard’s eyes track it, then shift back to the stranger, waiting for more than a claim.

Torin Highfoot

Torin Highfoot

Tell me about Elira.

Kaelith

Kaelith

She knew the old roads, and she knew your name before I did. She said this crest mattered, because it tied the fire to the men who came with it.

The guard’s jaw tightens at that. He does not reach for irons yet, but his hand settles more firmly on his belt, as if the room has just narrowed around a decision.

Kaelith

Kaelith

Elira was trying to keep someone alive. That is what got her killed, or so I was told after.

Torin Highfoot

Torin Highfoot

He knows more than he has said.

The Guard

The Guard

Enough. You come into my office with a stolen trinket and a dead woman’s name, then expect me to sit idle?

The stranger straightens, grief hardening into resolve, while Torin keeps the locket in hand. The guard steps out of the doorway at last, placing himself between the desk and the exit.

Try to calm the guard and explain the stranger is just a messenger

Torin lowers the locket just enough for the guard to see it is not hidden. His hand stays steady, but his thumb rubs once over the engraved crest.

Torin Highfoot

Torin Highfoot

He is not my accomplice. He is a messenger, and that is all.

The Guard

The Guard

A messenger does not walk in here with secrets and dead names on his tongue.

Kaelith

Kaelith

I walked in because I was told to bring this to him. Nothing more.

The guard hesitates, then drags in a breath and eases his grip from the belt. The tension in the room does not vanish, but it thins.

The Guard

The Guard

Fine. I am listening, but you keep that trinket in sight, and you start at the beginning.

Kaelith

Kaelith

At the beginning, then... I found Elira before the fire took her trail, and she trusted me with a name I did not know how to use.

Inquire about the name Elira told him.

SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +0)

Torin Highfoot

Torin Highfoot

What was the name Elira gave you?

The stranger stills at once, then reaches into his coat and draws out a folded scrap of ash-gray cloth. A name is stitched there in a careful hand, meant to be hidden but not erased.

Kaelith

Kaelith

Hollis Greave. She said if I lived, I was to put it in your hands.

The guard’s eyes flick from the stitched name to the silver locket in Torin’s fist. His jaw tightens, and that tiny shift is enough to cost Torin the room’s full trust.

The Guard

The Guard

A false name, maybe, or a true one. Either way, he is not walking out until I know which.

The stranger exhales through his nose, weary and exposed, while the locket catches the lantern light like a warning.

Kaelith

Kaelith

If you mean to keep me, then at least let him read the rest before you chain me.

I read the rest of the scrap

SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +3)

Interrupted in the Jail Office

Torin lowers his gaze to the cloth and turns it open under the lantern glow. The stitching is only a wrapper, and inside it, a second line appears in smaller thread, sharp as a whisper.

Torin Highfoot

Torin Highfoot

It is a keeper’s mark, not a common sign.

The next words are plain enough to read, and hard enough to matter. Hollis Greave was not just a messenger. He was sent from the east road outpost with orders to carry Elira's warning past the jail and into Torin's hands.

Kaelith

Kaelith

She said the watch had already sold its loyalty once. She would not trust the message to anyone in uniform.

The guard’s face changes as the truth lands. Not softer, but narrower. He takes one step back from the desk, and that retreat opens the doorway a little more.

The Guard

The Guard

If that is written true, then this reaches beyond a jail office. Hollis Greave, you will answer in chains, but not here.

As he says it, Torin notices a smear of ash on the reverse of the scrap, enough to suggest it was hidden in a burned hand before it was folded away.

Is the stranger Hollis Greave?

YES (Likely, rolled 46)

Kaelith

Kaelith

You look at me as if you are seeing a ghost, Torin. I am no ghost, though I have walked through enough fire to feel like one. My name is Kaelith, and I am indeed the man who carried that burden for you.

Torin Highfoot

Torin Highfoot

The name fits the weary set of his shoulders, and the way he holds his hands as if they still ache from the heat.

Kaelith

Kaelith

I promised Elira I would find you, and I have kept that promise. The rest of the truth is yours to hold now, if you are ready to hear it.

I tell the guard Kaelith is under my protection

SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +0)

Torin Highfoot

Torin Highfoot

Kaelith is under my protection.

The guard stops cold, his hand lingering away from Kaelith’s arm. The words hang in the dim lantern light, and the room goes still around them.

The Guard

The Guard

Your protection carries weight here, Torin Highfoot. But if he lies, you answer for him.

Kaelith

Kaelith

He takes the risk anyway. That is more than I earned.

Kaelith

Kaelith

Then let me speak plain, and let him keep the blame if I fail.

The guard exhales through his nose and steps back from the door, though his eyes never leave Kaelith. Torin’s claim holds, but it draws a sharp line of suspicion straight through the room.

The Guard

The Guard

One conversation. No tricks. After that, I decide whether he walks out free or in irons.
