Sapphire and Jasper walk into the dark cave. Crystal veins glow faintly in the walls, catching the sound of their footsteps and returning it in thin echoes.

Jasper slips his silver bow onto his back and tightens his dark brown ponytail. The black stone arch disappears behind them as the passage narrows.

Sooo... What do we do now?

Sapphire Stone-heart

I don't know.

Sapphire sighs, then draws a lantern from the pack their father prepared. She lights it and unfolds a map, spreading both across a flat crystal shelf.

These will come in handy.

Lantern light washes over inked tunnels and branching marks. Sapphire studies the map while Jasper leans close beside her, tracing the routes with one careful finger.

Jasper

There! That is the path we need to take.

“Sapphire looked at the path. "But it's the most dangerous!"”

But it’s the most dangerous!

Sapphire points to the route Jasper marked. Its ink passes through a region crowded with warning sigils, collapsed tunnels, and sharp mountain symbols unlike those on the safer branches.

The signs agree, but the oldest mark is too faded to read.

The knowledge settles clearly: this is the most dangerous path. Yet studying the map has cost them time, and the lantern flame has shortened while the cave echoes grow colder.

Then we should not mistake danger for a warning to stop. We can mark the turns and keep our eyes open.

Jasper folds the map only after copying the dangerous route’s first turns in charcoal on the crystal shelf. The chosen path waits ahead, descending into blue-black darkness.

“They both turned and looked at the path ahead, skeletons laid there decayed. "This place must be booby trapped." Jasper warned. "So keep your eyes peeled. As he said that he accidentally stepped on a stone, it sunk to the ground. "Uh, oh!" Jasper cried.”

They turn toward the descending path. Decayed skeletons lie scattered across the stone floor, their empty sockets aimed toward the darkness and their bones dulled by age.

This place must be booby trapped. Keep your eyes peeled.

Jasper steps carefully between the remains, bow secured across his back. The lantern throws long bars of gold across the walls and reveals no obvious wires or blades.

His boot presses onto a flat stone hidden beneath dust. It sinks with a muted click, and a faint tremor passes through the floor before fading harmlessly.

Jasper

Jasper

Uh, oh!

Nothing else moves. A little dust slips from the ceiling, settling over the old bones, while the lantern flame steadies and the dangerous path remains open.

Jasper freezes, then slowly lifts his boot from the stone. He watches the surrounding floor, waiting for another sign before taking even one more step.

“WHOOSH!! Arrows whizzed by. Sapphire's and Jasper's hearts were pounding with fear”

WHOOSH! A volley of arrows tears through the darkness. Sapphire twists behind her unbreakable shield as Jasper drops hard beside the scattered bones, and shafts hammer the stone around them.

One arrow scrapes Sapphire's armor, spinning away in a shower of sparks. Another buries itself beside Jasper's hand, close enough to make his fingers recoil.

Jasper

Jasper

Stay down! The floor is triggering them!

Their hearts pound as the volley ends. Sapphire's attempted advance has failed, but the arrows reveal a narrow side opening where their impacts shattered a thin crystal partition.

Jasper

There, behind the broken crystal. It may bypass the pressure stones.

Jasper crawls toward the newly exposed opening without touching the marked floor. The descending passage remains deadly ahead, while the side route offers a usable choice.

Get past the arrow trap

“Should I wait for a character to get injured or is this a good time?”

The last arrow clatters across the stone, and the trap falls silent. Neither Sapphire nor Jasper is injured; only dust and sparks drift through the lantern light.

Jasper

Jasper

That was too close. We are still whole, so we use the opening before the mechanism resets.

Jasper reaches the broken crystal without touching the pressure stone. Beyond it, the narrow passage bends away from the arrow-filled descent, its walls glittering with cold blue veins.

Jasper

Jasper

No more stepping blindly. The marks on the shelf must guide us here too.

The scattered decayed skeletons remain motionless behind them. Their ancient bones show no fresh disturbance, and the side opening offers a quiet route onward rather than another immediate threat.

Jasper

Jasper

The danger is real, but it has shown us a way through. I will check the first stones from this side.

He raises the lantern toward the bend. Nothing answers from the blue-black passage, while the trap behind them stays spent and silent for the moment.

“He raised his chin. "I think we are in the clear...for now." They continued to walk through the dark cave carefully avoiding the trigger stones now that they know what they look like.”

They continue through the blue-veined passage, stepping around each visible trigger stone. Jasper leads with the lantern while Sapphire follows, placing her boots only where the stone lies firm.

The careful crossing succeeds, carrying them beyond the trapped stretch to a broad crystal ledge overlooking a deeper cavern. Their route remains open, though Sapphire's hip scrapes hard against the wall when she twists past a narrow shelf.

Jasper

Jasper

You all right? That wall took a piece of your armor.

A bright scrape marks the silver plate at Sapphire's hip, and soreness tightens beneath it. Behind them, the decayed skeletons and spent arrow trap fade into the lantern's weak reach.

Jasper

Jasper

The stones are behind us. We can rest on this ledge, then follow the cavern onward.

Cold air rises from below, carrying a distant chiming sound through the crystals. Jasper steadies the lantern, and the newly won ledge gives them a safe place to pause before descending farther.
