The black focus remains suspended in the chamber’s center, silent and untouched. Its surface now bears a faint triple-turn pattern, while loosened silver currents begin threading toward a deeper seam beneath Hogwarts’s east foundation.

Professor Loen
The signature is visible again, but visibility does not make it authentic. It may identify the caster’s origin, or simply invite us to follow a prepared lure.
Professor Loen circles the focus without touching it, wand raised. Pale light follows each turn in the pattern, then slips downward through the floor toward the newly revealed route.

Desdemona Blackwood
Tessa remains under my ward. If the focus is bait, it will not use her as a witness or a key again.

Tessa Vale
The rhythm feels like the voice’s pattern, but not like the place where it began. It could be pointing us somewhere it wants us to enter.
Yuffie shifts closer to Iris, wand ready, while Lyla watches the silver currents gather at the floor seam. Neither follows the descending thread yet; the chamber waits around their silence.

Professor Loen
We can test the pattern here, or follow the route and risk confirming the lure. Iris, what do you see in the way the currents are choosing their path?

Iris Evergreen
The silver currents are descending, but the focus has not reacted to them.
✓ Quest Accepted
Establish whether the descending route leads toward the true caster
“I follow the silver route toward the deeper seam with everyone close.”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +1)

Iris follows the descending silver route toward the deeper seam, her staff guiding the pace. Professor Loen, Yuffie, Lyla, Desdemona, and Tessa stay close around her.

Yuffie
Keep moving, adorable genius. If the creepy route wants us somewhere, we can at least arrive together.
The silver currents bend beneath the floor instead of vanishing, revealing a safe descent through the chamber’s stone. The group reaches the deeper seam without triggering the silent focus.

Tessa Vale
This is deeper than before. The voice feels distant here, but the path ends at something sealed beneath the foundation.
At the seam, pale silver lines meet around a narrow vertical fissure in the stone. Beyond it lies a hollow space, cold and vast, with no returning pulse from the focus.

Professor Loen
We are at the route’s true terminus. The focus did not lead us into a trap; it led us to a sealed chamber below the foundation.

Desdemona Blackwood
Then the next choice belongs to Iris and Tessa. My ward remains ready, but this seal must not be opened for us.
“I open the sealed chamber with Tessa”
SUCCESS (Superb Magic, rolled -1)
Iris places her staff against the vertical fissure and reaches through the seal with Tessa beside her. Silver lines flare, accepting their joined intent without disturbing Desdemona’s ward.
The sealed stone unfolds inward like a flower made of dark slabs. Cold air pours from below, carrying the vast hush of a chamber untouched beneath Hogwarts.

Tessa Vale
It opened. I felt the seal recognize both of us, not just the magic guiding it.
The opening reveals a broad subterranean chamber, its floor descending into shallow black water beneath a ceiling lost in blue darkness. Pale symbols drift beneath the surface, slow and silent.

Professor Loen
Stay at the threshold until we understand the water. Iris, the opening is stable, but the spell has taken something from your staff.
The staff’s silver tip goes dark. Its stored light has been consumed by the opening, leaving Iris’s magic intact but removing that familiar source of illumination until it can be restored.

Desdemona Blackwood
The chamber is open, little sister. Tessa and I will remain beside you, but whatever waits below has not yet shown its purpose.

“I inspect the symbols beneath the black water with professor Loen.”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +4)

Iris steps to the threshold beside Professor Loen and leans over the black water. Together, they trace the drifting symbols without disturbing the surface.

Professor Loen
Watch their order, Iris. They are not floating marks. They are describing a sequence beneath the chamber.
The symbols rotate into three repeating clusters. The first records the sealed opening, the second names a listening presence, and the third marks a chamber farther below.
Iris recognizes the listening presence as the wall-bound shadow, but the symbols distinguish it from the deeper chamber’s occupant. The water reveals no returning channel to the wall-bound shadow.

Professor Loen
Excellent. This is a record, not a command. The shadow was directed toward this place, but it did not create what waits below.
A fourth cluster rises beneath the others, forming a clear map of stepping stones through the shallow water. The safe route curves right, avoiding a dark basin at the chamber’s center.
Professor Loen lowers her wand, visibly impressed. Iris now knows both the symbols’ warning and the safest path across the chamber, while the black water remains perfectly still.
“I cross the safe stepping-stone route”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +1)

Iris steps onto the first pale stone. It steadies beneath her weight, and the symbols below the water turn gently as she follows the marked curve to the right.
She crosses from stone to stone with careful, confident balance. The dark basin remains undisturbed beneath her, while Professor Loen tracks each landing from the threshold.

Yuffie
That’s it, adorable genius. Keep going. I’ve got my eyes on the water.
Iris reaches the final stepping stone and steps onto the far ledge. Cold air moves around her, carrying the chamber’s deeper silence without disturbing the route behind her.

Tessa Vale
You made it safely. The symbols are still holding the path open for everyone else.

Professor Loen
Excellent crossing, Iris. The route is sound, and you have reached the chamber’s far side without waking the basin.
Behind Iris, Desdemona keeps Tessa protected as Yuffie and Lyla prepare to follow. Ahead, a broad passage opens into blue darkness, its floor marked by the next silent sequence.
“I inspect the passage for the true caster’s trail”
FAILURE (Good Perception, rolled -3)
Iris pauses on the far ledge and studies the passage’s silent sequence, tracing its marks with her eyes instead of touching the blue-dark floor.

Iris Evergreen
The pattern records movement, but it does not preserve the caster’s trail.
Her scrutiny separates old impressions from newer ones, but the passage offers no reliable origin. The marks were arranged to imitate a trail, guiding attention toward the chamber below.

Professor Loen
It is a prepared false trail. Whoever shaped this place expected an investigator to search for a signature and find only the path they wanted followed.
As Iris follows the sequence to its apparent beginning, the pale markings dim in reverse order. The route behind her loses its readable pattern, leaving no second inspection point to pursue.

Tessa Vale
Then the caster hid the truth inside the warning itself. We cannot follow those marks back to them.

Yuffie
Great. A dead trail and a creepy hallway. At least it cannot pretend to be helpful anymore.
