Aiden and James reach the common room as a violent thudding rolls through the inn. The front door bows in its frame. The room goes still.

James

James

That is not the drunks.

James goes pale and takes a half step toward Aiden, then stops himself. The coin on the floor sits between them like a small, ugly promise.

Aiden Dryward

Aiden Dryward

Someone came back with muscle. Maybe a price. Maybe a warning.

Another удар hits the door, hard enough to rattle cups on the counter. The inn’s peace feels thin as paper. If Aiden wants coin, this is the kind of trouble mercenaries are paid to face.

James

James

Aiden... if that door opens, they will come for the room. For me, maybe for you too.

James swallows, forcing himself upright. Fear is there, but so is trust. The next move belongs to Aiden, and it will decide whether he stands as hired steel, protector, or both.

Hold the common room against the attackers

I flip a table and take cover with my hand-held crossbow and prepare to fire.

Aiden yanks the nearest table sideways and slams it down on its edge. The blow from the door shakes the room, but the wood stays between him and the entrance.

He drops behind it and levels his hand-held crossbow over the makeshift cover, sight fixed on the latch.

James

James

Fast. Clean. They are not walking in on us.

The front door bucks again, then the frame cracks wider. Cold air spills through, and a boot heel flashes in the gap.

A man's voice comes through the splintering wood, sharp with command. Not a drunk, not a bully. Someone who knows who is inside.

James

James

Aiden, I know that voice.

The crossbow stays trained on the opening as the latch gives another ugly groan, and the door starts to swing inward.

I hold fast prepared to fire until I can see who it is.

Aiden holds the crossbow steady as the door finally swings inward on cracked hinges.

Three figures fill the gap, wet cloaks, steel on their arms, and a banner seal pinned to the lead man’s breast.

James

James

No... not them.

Captain Edrin Vale

Captain Edrin Vale

Aiden Dryward. Step away from the innkeeper and we do this the easy way.

Aiden Dryward

Aiden Dryward

A captain. So that is who sent them.

James stiffens behind the cover, staring at the seal as recognition and fear hit at once.

Captain Edrin Vale

Captain Edrin Vale

Your old work leaves tracks, mercenary. This time, the crown wants names.

Trying to deescalate the situation

I stand down and ask what he requires?

Aiden eases the crossbow down and steps clear of the table. The room goes still around the scrape of wet boots at the doorway.

Aiden Dryward

Aiden Dryward

I stand down. What do you require?

Captain Edrin Vale

Captain Edrin Vale

Names, first. Then the man you are hiding.

James

James

He knows enough already. Maker, let Aiden keep him talking.

The captain’s gaze flicks from Aiden to James, then back again, measuring the silence like coin.

Captain Edrin Vale

Captain Edrin Vale

Mercenaries sell loyalty by the hour. Tell me who hired you, and I decide how hard this room becomes.

James straightens a fraction behind the counter, fear still on him, but now he watches Aiden for the answer instead of the door.

I cannot divulge any information of my former employers but as it stands now I have no current jobs on the go. What is this all about?

I cannot speak on former employers. I have no current work. Tell me what this is really about.

Captain Edrin Vale

Captain Edrin Vale

That is a cleaner answer than a lie.

The captain lowers his hand a little, not in peace, only in calculation. James keeps still behind the counter, watching the exchange like a man listening for the blade to drop.

Captain Edrin Vale

Captain Edrin Vale

A deserter’s trail, a missing clerk, and a thief with your shape were all named in the same hour. I want the truth before I waste men hunting the wrong one.

Aiden Dryward

Aiden Dryward

He is not here for coin. He is here for a name.

James

James

Aiden came here for a roof and a meal, not trouble. If you have business, captain, name it plain.

Vale’s eyes cut to James, then back to Aiden. The open door spits cold across the floorboards, and the captain waits, measuring whether mercy or force will serve him better.

I am no thief, nor deserter and I know know nothing of a missing clerk. But for a price I can help you track down who you are looking for?

I am no thief or deserter. I know nothing of a missing clerk. Pay me, and I help you track your quarry.

Captain Edrin Vale

Captain Edrin Vale

Straight talk, at last. That buys you a hearing.

Captain Edrin Vale

Captain Edrin Vale

I need a man who vanishes roads, not a brawl in a tavern. If you can put me on his trail, I pay and I leave your inn standing.

James

James

Thank the gods. He is listening now.

Vale eases one step back from the threshold, and the room stops feeling like a blade laid across a throat. James lets out a breath he has been holding too long.

The captain flicks two fingers toward the broken door, then back to Aiden, making the bargain plain. For the moment, words hold where force was about to begin.

Tell me everything you can about this man and I will find him.

Vale’s jaw tightens, then he exhales through his nose and reaches into his cloak instead of for his blade.

Captain Edrin Vale

Captain Edrin Vale

Fine. You want the shape of him, not just the name.

Captain Edrin Vale

Captain Edrin Vale

He is a clerk named Orin Bell, late twenties, left the keep with sealed ledgers and a horse he did not steal cleanly. He favors the north road, and he lies badly when he is cornered.

James’ hands loosen on the counter edge. The captain’s gaze stays on Aiden, but the heat in it has gone to work, not war.

Captain Edrin Vale

Captain Edrin Vale

He was last seen asking after river ferries, then a hedge priest, then an old mill with a collapsed roof. He is frightened, or desperate, or both.

Aiden Dryward

Aiden Dryward

Then I start with the ferries.

Vale gives one short nod and spreads a creased scrap of parchment on the counter, showing a rough seal, a route mark, and a line of names. The cold at the doorway still breathes into the room, but now it feels like weather, not an attack.

Captain Edrin Vale

Captain Edrin Vale

Take that. If you bring him in alive, I pay extra. If you cannot, bring back proof of where he ran.
