The cellar air is cold and sour with spilled wine. Aiden Dryward steps down the last stair as three drunk men crowd the innkeeper against the barrels.

One brute palms a rusted dagger at his belt. Another sways forward, grinning with red eyes and bad breath. The third hooks a thumb at the man on the wall and spits, demanding the tab be wiped clean.

James

James

Please, I am asking you to pay what you owe. I cannot keep feeding you for free.

The innkeeper’s hands shake. He keeps his back to the barrels, trying not to look at the blades.

The Drunk Brute

The Drunk Brute

Waive it, then. Or we break the cask and take our coin back in ale.

The nearest man shifts his grip on the dagger hilt, testing how bold the room feels.

Aiden Dryward

Aiden Dryward

Three against one. Close range, low ceiling, bad footing.

All three turn at the stair’s last groan and notice Aiden Dryward at the bottom, filling the doorway with steel and shadow.

The Drunk Brute

And who are you supposed to be?

✓ Quest Accepted

Aiden Dryward

Do you know who I am?

The words land flat and hard in the cellar. The nearest drunk’s grin thins. His hand slips off the dagger hilt, not away from it, but suddenly less eager to draw.

The Drunk Brute

The Drunk Brute

Dryward. The butcher from the south road. No, worse than that.

The Second Drunk

The Second Drunk

...That name again.

The third man glances from Aiden Dryward to the innkeeper, and his swagger stalls. The innkeeper sees the shift and straightens behind the barrels, drawing one shaking breath.

James

James

Please. Leave this place. I have nothing more for you.

The brute with the dagger takes one step back, while the other two hold their ground and stare as if they are reassessing the cost of staying.

I pull out my longsword and tell them they have 3 seconds to leave or I will cut down 2 of them and make the 3rd clean the mess.

Aiden Dryward draws his longsword in one smooth motion, the blade catching cellar light as he levels it between the men and the innkeeper. The room goes still around the steel.

Three seconds. Leave, or I cut two of you down and make the third clean it up.

The Drunk Brute

The Drunk Brute

...No fight's worth that.

The Second Drunk

The Second Drunk

He means it. Gods, he means it.

The brute nearest the stairs swallows hard and takes another step back. The second man lowers his hands, and the third breaks his stare first, looking toward the cellar exit instead of the innkeeper.

James

James

Thank you. Please, just go.

At the innkeeper's voice, the drunks yield at once. They shift aside from the barrels, backing toward the stairs without another challenge, while the innkeeper stays behind the casks, trembling but untouched.

Aiden Dryward

You okay, old man?

James

James

Aye... I am now. Thought I was done for when they cornered me.

The innkeeper lowers his hands, still shaking, but the fear in his face loosens into exhausted gratitude. He shifts around the barrels and starts toward Aiden, careful on the cellar steps.

James

James

Name's James. I owe you more than I can say.

Behind him, the three drunks keep edging for the stairs, quiet now, the threat of steel enough to keep them moving.

James

James

You came down here alone for my sake. Why?

James stops within arm's reach of Aiden, eyes searching his face for an answer he does not dare assume.

Aiden Dryward

You were like a father to me. You took me in when no one else would. This is the least I can do.

James goes still, then his shoulders sag with the weight of it. The words land hard enough to loosen something in his face, gratitude and shame mixing together.

James

James

Father, huh... I never thought to hear that. Gods, Aiden, I only gave you a roof and a bowl when I could spare them.

He reaches out, stops short of touching Aiden's arm, then draws a folded pouch from his belt with careful fingers.

James

James

Take it. The payment we agreed, and a little more besides. You earned that much, and twice over.

The pouch thuds into Aiden's hand, heavier than a simple wage. A coin slips against the leather and clinks on the cellar floor, making James wince at the sound.

James

James

I wanted to ask you one thing, if you'll indulge an old man. Stay a moment, and let me know where the road has taken you since you left my table.
