Blackout follows the clustered souls through the tunnel’s darkness, approaching without a sound or visible outline. None of the trapped workers notices him as he reaches the maintenance junction.

Three maintenance technicians strain behind buckling emergency doors. Mara Venn, lean with weathered features and a small scar through one eyebrow,, a middle-aged woman with cropped gray hair, a blue utility jacket, and a heavy tool belt, braces against the control housing.

The other two technicians, a young man, narrow-built with a square jaw and tousled black hair, in orange coveralls and an older woman, broad-shouldered with a lined face and tightly braided white hair, in a yellow safety vest, hammer uselessly at the emergency release. Their souls flare close together beyond the metal.

Somewhere inside the junction wall, the irregular machinery clicks faster. Conduits shudder, warning lights stutter red, and the nearest door grinds downward over the trapped crew.

Blackout remains unseen in the junction’s layered darkness while the door drops another few inches. Behind it, Mara searches the failing controls for an answer, unaware that help has arrived.

Blackout slips into the junction wall, his shadow spreading through concrete and conduits. Inside, the machinery resolves into a dense knot of relays, fiber lines, and humming power regulators.

His heightened perception traces the signal to a compact black module buried behind the primary regulator. Its casing bears no manufacturer mark, but its circuitry is unmistakably custom-built.

Blackout isolates the module’s control path and finds the source: a timer loop is forcing tunnel power into the mansion, using the sealed doors as a load anchor.

The regulator discharges through his shadow before he can fully dampen it. A sharp electrical sting tears across his shoulder, and the junction answers with one loud metallic crack.

The source is uncovered and accessible within the wall: severing the timer loop will stop the mansion-bound transfer, though the burst has alerted Mara to an unseen presence.

Blackout’s shadow threads through the module, pinning the false authorization beneath layers of darkness. He severs the timer loop at its source, and the circuitry snaps silent.

Power drains from the mansion-bound line. The regulator settles into a low hum, the red warning lights turn steady, and the descending emergency door stops with clearance above the workers.

The black module’s casing blinks once, then goes dead. Behind the door, the young technician lowers his hammer while the older woman releases the manual control.

Before the crew can locate the disturbance, Blackout folds himself into the junction’s deepest shadows. His outline, presence, and movement vanish among the conduits and concrete.

Blackout withdraws through the tunnel’s layered darkness, moving slowly enough that cameras register only stable corridors and empty frames. The rescued crew remains unaware of his passage.

He crosses the mansion network without disturbing a sensor, emerging in the negotiation room’s deepest shadow. The employer is still beside the walnut table, watching the restored feeds.

The employer turns toward the darkness, unable to see Blackout but certain of his presence. He opens a secure payment case and places a slim black transfer card on the table.

The card’s indicator glows green, confirming the payment. On the wall, the intersection feed shows traffic beginning to move beneath restored signals.
