The village inn crouches beside the muddy road, its shutters glowing amber in the late light. Silver, Mirelle, the Noble, and the wounded Guard enter beneath a creaking sign. Warmth, stew, and woodsmoke replace the ruin's ash.

“Everything in those dangerous ruins wants you dead.”

“That is a warning, Silver. But not yet the one I asked for. What makes them so lethal?”

The innkeeper hurries from behind the counter, directing the wounded Guard toward a bench and carrying a ring of iron keys. The Noble keeps close to Mirelle, watching the road through the open door.

“A bed first, questions after. My arm is holding, but I would rather not test it.”

The wardstone's mark followed them here. If the basin answers it, the road is not the boundary.

While rooms are prepared, water shivers in a copper basin near the hearth. A green-and-black reflection forms across its surface, copying the wardstone's sigil. It fades, then returns with the rhythm of a distant pulse.

The ruins are lethal because they are defended. Golems, goblins, and undead entities still patrol them, and they attack anyone who enters.

The basin's reflection steadies as Silver speaks. Beneath the black shape, a second pattern unfolds, its curves unmistakably draconic.

I noticed the sigil before tonight. It is a dragon sigil, meant to protect whoever it follows.

Protection that crosses warded boundaries is not simple protection. It may be a mark, a tether, or both.

Then it followed us into the village. Shelter has not stopped it.

The green dragon shape curls around the basin's rim. Its reflection turns toward Silver's unseen position, and the wardstone's distant pulse answers from beyond the sealed road.
