Scene1
The Goblin's Signaldeeper chamber
The Goblin's Signal

Cold stone walls trap the heat of the fight. Dakern stands on the first floor of the dungeon, breath dragging in his chest, as the last goblin scrambles backward and presses flat against the masonry.

A skeletal summon looms between them, one bony hand locked around a goblin’s throat. The creature claws at empty air, eyes wide with terror.

Dakern’s grimoire is open, the ritual marks ready. The air around the pages feels tight, waiting for the binding to be spoken.

Then the goblins change their cries. The shrieking snaps into a rhythm, harsh and steady, carrying down the corridor like a signal drum.

From deeper in the dungeon, something answers with a distant scrape and a thudding rush of feet.

The Goblin in the grip of the skeleton wheezes, staring past Dakern in panic. "Boss coming. Big one. Let me go!"

The passage beyond the fight darkens with moving shapes. The binding is ready, but so is whatever the goblins have called.

✓ Quest Accepted

Bind the goblin thrall

Can I finish the binding before the reinforcements reach me?

NO, BUT (Even, rolled 60)

The ritual ink on the page flares and then dies, the magical tether snapping before it can take hold. The heavy thud of approaching footsteps vibrates through the floor, signaling that the reinforcements have arrived too soon.

me and my skelleton start running away while i restart the binding ritual

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +0)

The Goblin's Signal

Dakern snaps the grimoire shut, then opens it again on the run. The skeletal summon lurches after him, dragging the goblin free of the choke point as the corridor shakes behind them.

dakern

dakern

The page takes this time.

He fingers the ritual marks and speaks the binding anew. This time the ink answers, crawling black across the page instead of fading.

The Goblin in the grip of the skeleton

The Goblin in the grip of the skeleton

No, no, stop, stop! I hear it, I hear it coming!

The goblin’s thrashing jerks under the skeleton’s grip, but the spell catches. A thin, dark tether cinches around its panic like a collar.

The skeleton braces, keeping the goblin pinned while the last steps boom closer from the right.

The binding settles. The goblin goes still in the summon’s grip, eyes fixed past dakern toward the unseen threat at the corridor’s end.

Quest Complete

Bind the goblin thrall

i put my summons back into the book to be used later and hide waiting to see what the boss looks like

SUCCESS (Legendary Stealth, rolled +0)

The Goblin's Signal

Dakern slips the summon back into the grimoire with a whisper of bone and ash. The corridor swallows him as he fades into the right-hand shadow, silent as the stone itself.

The goblin stays frozen in the skeleton’s grip, tether tight at its throat, eyes locked down the corridor. The footfalls grow heavier, and a low grunt carries with them.

A broader shape enters the far end of the hall, just beyond clear sight, with a torch flare and a drag of metal. The goblin flinches but does not speak.

dakern

dakern

The bond holds. I can watch.

The unseen newcomer pauses. Stone and torchlight flicker over the corridor mouth, and a voice begins to form, rough and impatient.

The Goblin in the grip of the skeleton

The Goblin in the grip of the skeleton

Boss... no, please, I did what you said.

The answer comes from the darkness ahead, slow and cold. 'Then show me who is hiding with you.'

✓ Quest Accepted

Learn who the boss in the corridor is

i un-summon the skeleton and the goblin and place them into the book

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -1)

The Goblin's Signal

Dakern opens the grimoire and speaks the binding under his breath. The goblin and the skeletal summon blur into pale ash and black threads, both pulled down into the page at once.

The corridor falls strangely empty. Where bone had locked flesh, there is only drifting grit, and the grimoire snaps shut with a dull thud against Dakern's palm.

From the far end, the rough voice stops mid-breath. The torchlight wavers harder, then steadies on a figure still hidden by the bend.

The Goblin in the grip of the skeleton

The Goblin in the grip of the skeleton

Boss, I... I do not hear him now.

The Goblin in the grip of the skeleton

The Goblin in the grip of the skeleton

It is gone. The necromancer took it.

A slow boot scrape answers from the darkness ahead, heavy and deliberate, as if the speaker is choosing each step.

Varek

Varek

Interesting. Then the hiding one is the necromancer.

dakern

The shadows here are deep enough to mask my movement if I hug the western wall.

Dakern realizes that the uneven stonework and the flickering torchlight create a perfect blind spot, allowing him to slip forward undetected toward the bend.

YES (Likely, rolled 46)

The Goblin's Signal
dakern

dakern

The light catches his face as he steps into the open, revealing a jagged scar running from his temple to his jaw.

The Unknown Boss emerges from the gloom, his heavy plate armor clanking softly against the stone floor as he scans the corridor with cold, calculating eyes.

i see that there is no goblins around the boss and summon my skeleton and goblin to fight him

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +2)

The Goblin's Signal

Dakern lifts the grimoire and speaks the binding under his breath. The ash at his feet stirs, then gathers itself into a thin black spiral.

Bone clicks answer first. A skeletal hand claws free of the dust, followed by a hunched goblin shape dragging itself up from the pages like a bad memory made flesh.

The goblin snatches a broken spear from the ground and bares its teeth toward the boss. The skeleton steps in beside it, jaw hanging open, ready to lunge.

Varek

Varek

So, the necromancer brings pets.

Dakern’s summons fan out in the corridor, blocking the path behind him and fixing their hollow attention on the armored man.

Varek

Varek

He wanted me to see that. Fine. Now I know what kind of monster he is.

The floor shudders again, harder this time, as if the dungeon itself is bracing for the clash.

the skeleton and the goblin attack the boss at the same time while i prepare a spell

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -3)

The Goblin's Signal

Dakern throws a hand through the sigil, and the air snaps cold. The goblin thrall darts low, spear first, while the skeleton crashes in high, forcing the boss to split his guard.

The armored man staggers back a half step, blade dragging sparks from stone. Black grit sprays from the edge of Dakern’s casting, a sharp toll for the spell’s speed.

The grimoire drinks in the light as the glyph finishes. A thin binding thread lashes from its pages and coils around the boss’s wrist before he can reset his grip.

Varek

Varek

Trap him! He is the necromancer!

The goblin bares its teeth and presses harder, buying Dakern a heartbeat. The skeleton keeps the boss pinned at the corridor bend, ribs rattling from the impact.

Dakern’s casting hand trembles from the strain, and the floor gives another hard shiver under everyone’s boots.

The boss’s helmet tilts toward Dakern, now linked by a faint dark thread. He has been marked, and the corridor seems to hold its breath for his answer.

i use my magic to bind the boss

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +1)

The Goblin's Signal

Dakern answers the marked wrist with a fresh knot of dark force. The thread tightens, not as rope but as command, and the boss’s armored arm locks in place.

Varek

Varek

No... hold, damn you!

His broadsword dips as his shoulder jerks against the binding. The goblin thrall shoves in hard at his side, and the skeleton forces him back into the bend.

Varek

Varek

A binding craft this clean... so the necromancer himself stands here.

The dark thread flashes once, then settles into a steady leash from grimoire to wrist. The boss is caught, breathing ragged through his helmet.

Varek

Varek

Show your face, necromancer. Or do you hide behind dead things?

The corridor shudders again. Stone dust drifts down between them, and the bound boss waits for Dakern’s next move.

i use my magic to make the boss into another of my summons

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +1)

The Goblin's Signal

Dakern answers the challenge with a final pulse from the grimoire. The leash of shadow tightens around the boss’s wrist, then sinks into his armor like ink into cloth.

Varek

Varek

No... what have you done?

The boss’s stance breaks. His broadsword lowers, not by choice, but by command, as if an unseen hand has turned his wrist for him.

dakern

dakern

The binding takes hold.

A dark mark blooms across the boss’s gauntlet, matching the pattern on Dakern’s grimoire. The corridor tremors shake dust from the ceiling while the goblin thrall flinches back from the new aura.

Varek

Varek

I am yours... no, wait. Who are you?

The answer is already written in the spell. The boss stands bound, breathing hard, eyes fixed on Dakern through the helm slit as the leash settles into a permanent, waiting stillness.

i walk up to my new summon and ask his name

SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled -1)

The Goblin's Signal

Dakern steps into the space the binding gives him, boots scraping grit over the corridor stones. The boss does not resist, only turns his helm a fraction as the leash in his gauntlet twitches under the movement.

The goblin thrall watches from the side, spear tight in both hands, ears flat as dust falls around all three of them.

dakern

dakern

What is your name?

Varek

Varek

...Varek. Varek of the corridor guard.

Varek

Varek

I meant to serve the necromancer. That was the oath I was given.

As he speaks, the dark sigil on his gauntlet gives a dull pulse. The answering strain bites back through Dakern's grimoire, a brief sting that costs him a breath.

Varek

Varek

If you are the one in the shadows, then tell me what name to answer to now.

i put my summons back into my grimoire and start to head for the dungeon boss

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +0)

The Goblin's Signal

Dakern lowers the grimoire, and the dark thread around Varek and the goblin thins at once. The goblin thrall is drawn into the book in a hiss of ash and breath, and Varek follows, swallowed by the same black page light.

The corridor goes strangely still. Dust keeps drifting down, but now there is only one set of footsteps moving forward, Dakern's.

dakern

dakern

The binding holds. Both summons are gone.

Dakern starts toward Varek, boots steady on the grit, grimoire closed at his side.

Varek

Varek

Good. Then walk, necromancer. The guardroom is ahead, and someone there already knows your scent.

A fresh tremor runs through the stone. From deeper in the dungeon, metal scrapes against metal, slow and deliberate.

✓ Quest Accepted

Reach the guardroom

dakern leaves first floor of a dungeon corridor behind and arrives at guardroom.

I follow varek to the entrance of the guard room

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled -3)

The Goblin's Signal

Dakern slips into the guardroom behind Varek, and the corridor sound dies at once. The chamber is narrow, torchlit, and stale with old sweat, with benches pushed crookedly under a rack of spears.

A guard lies on the floor by the inner door, not moving. Another shape stands over the lock, half-turned at the entrance, hand already going to a blade.

Varek

Varek

Too late to be quiet now. That one saw us coming.

Varek takes one heavy step forward, putting himself between dakern and the room's far side. The torch nearest the door flutters hard, throwing his shadow across the fallen guard.

dakern

dakern

The inner door is still barred from this side.

Unknown Guard

Unknown Guard

Quest Complete

Reach the guardroom

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -1)

The Goblin's Signal

Dakern lifts the grimoire and speaks the binding in a low, clean hiss. Dark threads snap out, catch the shocked guard at the wrist and throat, and drag his protest inward.

Unknown Guard

Unknown Guard

No, wait, I was only...

The words collapse into a choke. His blade slips from numb fingers and clangs against the flagstones.

Varek halts with a sharp look, then gives dakern room as the mark blooms over the guard's gauntlet like soot in water.

Unknown Guard

Unknown Guard

I can feel it taking hold... what am I now?

The prone guard by the inner door stirs at the sound, one eyelid cracking open. From beyond the barred door, heavy boots strike nearer, slow and certain.

Varek

Varek

Make it quick. Whatever is coming, it knows we are here.

✓ Quest Accepted

Secure the guardroom

I tell varek and my new summon to infiltrate the guard room and rely information to me

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +2)

The Goblin's Signal

Dakern lowers the grimoire and gives the room a curt, binding gesture. Varek straightens at once, while the marked guard catches himself on one knee and listens.

dakern

dakern

Infiltrate the guardroom. Listen. Report back to me.

Varek

Varek

At once.

Unknown Guard

Unknown Guard

Yes... I hear him. I will bring you what I find.

The guard rises with a stiff, obedient motion and moves toward the fallen blade. Varek slips deeper into the room, eyes on the shuddering inner door, while the prone guard stirs harder at the threshold.

For a breath, both thralls work in silence, one scanning the corners, the other testing the latch and listening past the wall. Their attention settles on the corridor beyond, then returns to dakern for direction.

i summon my skeleton and my goblin in preperation and go down the hallway

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +1)

The Goblin's Signal

Dakern answers the silence with a fresh binding pulse, and the grimoire drinks it in. In the corridor behind him, the air stirs, then hardens into shape.

Bone clicks together from the dark, assembling into a skeletal warrior at his side. A goblin thrall follows in its wake, head bowed, waiting.

dakern

dakern

The summons hold.

Varek catches the change at once and shifts toward the hallway, broadsword low. The marked guard jerks upright and looks to dakern for the next order.

Varek

Varek

The hall is clear for the moment, but something heavier is moving beyond the door.

Dakern moves out with his new dead at his back, the guardroom receding behind him. The shuddering inner door fills the passage ahead, each thump asking whether he opens it now or lets it come to him.

let it come to us and we ambush whatever comes through the door

SUCCESS (Legendary Stealth, rolled +2)

The Goblin's Signal

Dakern melts into the wall-shadow beside the inner door. Varek and the bound guard flatten themselves opposite him, while the skeletal warrior takes the center line, silent as a hooked blade.

The goblin thrall crouches low near the threshold, ears up. For a breath, the room holds its own breath with it.

Then the door shudders harder, and the iron latch starts to lift from the other side.

Varek

Varek

Now.

Dakern keeps still, grimoire tucked close, as the others tense around him. The hidden side of the door goes quiet, like something large has noticed the waiting.

The latch gives a final rattle, and a slit of darkness opens under the door, spilling a draft and the faint scrape of metal.

I tell the skeleton to open the door and use my magic to restrain whats behind the door

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -3)

The Goblin's Signal

Dakern lifts a hand, and the skeletal warrior jerks the door wider with a hollow scrape of bone on iron. Black air spills through the gap as the thing behind it shifts toward the opening.

Dakern speaks the binding, low and sharp. Dark threads snap from his grimoire and wrap the unseen shape beyond the door, pinning its motion in place.

Varek

Varek

There. Hold it.

The restrained force pounds once against the threshold, and the shock runs up Dakern's arm. The grimoire flares hot in his grip, stealing a breath of strength.

Unknown Guard

Unknown Guard

Whatever is coming, it is real. Worse than real.

The inner door hangs open now, no longer just shuddering. Something heavy waits on the other side, trapped at the edge of the light, while the room fills with the clang of settling metal.

Varek

Varek

Master, do we push through, or keep it pinned?

I keep it pinned while my summons surrond it

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -1)

The Goblin's Signal

Dakern tightens the spell, and the dark threads bite deeper. The thing beyond the doorway stops fighting the seal and starts circling under it, contained while his summons close in from three sides.

The skeletal warrior shifts to the far side of the threshold, blade up, while the goblin thrall darts low and snarls at the trapped presence. Varek steps in behind them, cutting off the room with his broadsword.

Varek

Varek

Pinned. Good. Now it cannot rush us.

The pressure at the door flattens against the binding, then weakens. Metal scrapes once, and whatever waits outside is forced to stay where the light can touch it.

Unknown Guard

Unknown Guard

It worked. The room is ours if that seal holds.

Dakern's grimoire cools in his hand as the seal settles into a steady pull. The inner door remains open, the path beyond no longer free, and the trapped threat hesitates on the other side.

Quest Complete

Attribute Upgrade: Willpower GreatSuperb

i use my magic to bind the monster tighter and we all advance into the room to see what it is

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -3)

The Goblin's Signal

Dakern feeds the seal another thread of power, and the binding clamps harder around the thing beyond the door. The pull steadies, but his wrist goes numb from the strain.

The threshold gives way at last. Beyond it lies a deeper chamber, broad and rough cut, with damp stone, old chain hooks, and a low platform slick with stale dark stains.

Varek

Varek

There. That is not a beast's den. Someone was kept here.

The skeletal warrior advances first, blade raised, while the goblin thrall slinks in beside the wall. Dakern follows under the grimoire's cold glow.

Unknown Guard

Unknown Guard

By the pits... it is a captive. And it is awake.

In the far corner, a hulking shape twists against the dark binding, chained and half-hidden, its head lifting toward the intruders. The seal holds, but something heavier than expected now strains against it.

Varek

Varek

Master, if that thing breaks loose, we must choose quickly.

✓ Quest Accepted

Learn what the captive is

i use my magic to add the captive to my summons

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +0)

Dakern threads his spell into the captive’s binding, and the dark lines answer. The chain strain gives way to his will, not with a snap, but with a hard, obedient stillness.

The hulking shape slumps forward into the light. A goblin, broad for its kind, scarred and half-broken, drags one knee to the stone as the summoning mark settles over it.

Varek

Varek

By the deep pits... he took it.

The goblin lifts its head, eyes dulled and fixed on Dakern’s grimoire. The old defiance is gone, replaced by a forced, waiting stillness.

Unknown Guard

Unknown Guard

It is bound, master. It answers now.

The chamber quiets at once, except for the faint scrape of the captive’s chains settling against stone. The way forward remains open, but the thing in the corner is no longer a prisoner of the room.

The Goblin's Signal
dakern

dakern

The grimoire pulses with a rhythmic, familiar heat. As I focus my will upon the binding marks, the pages ripple, revealing the hidden potential and current state of every soul I have tethered to my service.

Varek

Varek

You seem lost in the ink, master. Does the book speak of our strength, or does it merely weigh the cost of our chains?

Dakern traces the glowing script, watching as the stats of his thralls manifest in the margins of the parchment. The air in the chamber grows heavy and still, the urgency of the dungeon's depths fading into the background as the necromancer finds a moment of quiet clarity.

I investigate the information of my summons and assign them all rankings from strongest to weakest

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -2)

The Goblin's Signal

The margins bloom with sigils as Dakern sorts the tethered names by force, steadiness, and will. One line settles first, Varek, all disciplined resistance and heavy armor held in check.

The bound goblin follows, smaller in strength but dense with obedience, its marker bright with raw, useful instinct. The newly claimed goblin thrall trails last, scarred and broad, its power blunt but obediently waiting.

Varek

Varek

So that is how it reads, then. Steel first, hunger second, and the rest of us where your hand decides.

Varek

Varek

His voice stays calm, but his eyes track the changing ranks with wary respect.

The ritual’s glow taxes Dakern, a thin ache settling behind his scar as the ink drinks a little more of his focus. The chamber itself remains still, but the grimoire now holds a clean order of power.

Varek

Varek

If you mean to keep us all useful, master, tell me where you want the strongest placed.

The book lies open in Dakern’s hands, the final ranking fixed, while Varek waits for the next command.

Quest Complete

Learn what the grimoire reveals about Dakern's thralls

i put all of my summons back into the book except for the captive i just subdued

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +2)

The Goblin's Signal

Dakern closes his hand over the grimoire, and the settled ranks begin to fold inward.

One by one, the marks for Varek, the bound guard, the skeletal warrior, and the goblin thralls sink into the pages like embers swallowed by ash.

Only the newly subdued goblin remains listed, its tether bright and waiting, fixed apart from the rest.

Varek

Varek

So. You strip the board clean and keep the strongest piece on it.

Varek

Varek

He is learning control faster than most men learn fear.

The chamber light dips as the hidden weight of the dismissed summons leaves the air, and the grimoire settles warmer in Dakern’s grip.

Varek

Varek

If we are to move, master, the corridor will not wait forever.

i want to see what the captive looks like

SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled -1)

The Goblin's Signal

Dakern turns the grimoire a fraction, and the captive’s mark answers his gaze.

The bound goblin is broad through the shoulders, scarred along one cheek and both forearms, with a ragged patch of old iron links still hanging from one wrist.

Its eyes stay down, but the soul-mark on its chest burns clear and obedient, waiting for direction.

A thin pulse of pain needles through Dakern’s palm from the book, the price of forcing the page open this hard.

Varek

Varek

That one has seen chains before. Better for it, if it knows where to kneel.

From the corridor beyond the doorway, a deeper scrape of metal drags closer, and the shadows there thicken into a moving shape.

Varek

Varek

Master, something is coming. Give the word, or it enters on its own.

✓ Quest Accepted

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +1)

The Goblin's Signal

Dakern closes his grip in the book, and the goblin’s chain-bound state simply falls away. Iron links slacken to the floor in a hiss of dust.

The goblin straightens under the mark’s pull, head lifting, shoulders squaring, no longer a captive but a waiting tool.

dakern

dakern

The chains are gone. The mark holds.

Dakern angles the grimoire toward the corridor and gives the order. Varek shifts first, taking a step toward the threshold.

Varek

Varek

Gladly. If it breaks through, I meet it head on.

The goblin jerks once, then bares its teeth in a hard, eager grin and leans after Varek, ready to prove itself.

Beyond the doorway, the moving shape resolves into a hulking, armor plated brute with a chained hook dragging at its side. It stops at the threshold, as if it has found them first.

Dakern’s order snaps through the chamber, and the bound thralls lunge together. Varek drives in high, while the goblin thrall darts low for the brute’s legs.

The armored giant staggers back a step under the combined hit, its chained hook skidding wide across stone. Dust bursts up around its greaves.

Varek

Varek

Hold it there. Don’t let it swing free.

The goblin thrall snarls and clamps both hands on the brute’s weapon arm, forcing the hook down instead of driving the body farther into the room.

goblin thrall

Alive, then. I hear you, master.

Dakern’s mark bites deeper into the chamber air, and the brute’s resistance turns stiff and sluggish under the command. It cannot break free, but it still towers over them at the threshold, trapped and thrashing for a next move.

✓ Quest Accepted

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +0)

The Goblin's Signal

Dakern lifts the grimoire and speaks the contract into the air. Black script crawls from the page toward the hulking brute, wrapping its shoulders in cold, obedient bands.

The brute jerks once, then stills. Its chained hook slackens in its hand as the command takes root and the savage force behind its snarl goes hollow.

Varek steps back a pace, staring at the change. The goblin thrall loosens its grip at last, but keeps one hand on the brute’s arm as if afraid to trust it.

Varek

Varek

It is yours now. The threshold holds.

The brute lowers to one knee, head bowed toward dakern’s mark. Dust settles around its armor as the chamber’s struggle breaks into uneasy silence.
