Summons from the Ruined Court
the dust-covered courier
The Dust-Covered Courier

Before the court can close the hearing, a dust-covered courier arrives through the crowd. He is a lean young adult man in a faded ocher cloak, with wind-chapped cheeks and a cracked leather satchel.

The Dust-Covered Courier

The Dust-Covered Courier

Summons for Judge. Recovered from a neglected records chamber beneath the archive vault, sealed and addressed under his former office.

The courier presents a blackened parchment bearing the old magistrate’s device. Its wording directs the disputed warrant to be examined at The Final Edict, the ruined courthouse where Judge once served.

The Presiding Magistrate

The Presiding Magistrate

The hearing is transferred. Corren Vale will go with Judge to The Final Edict, under guard and with the warrant preserved as evidence.

Guards lift Corren from the steps and bind his shackles for travel without tightening them. The crowd parts uneasily as the summons passes from the courier toward Judge.

The Young Adult Scribe

The Young Adult Scribe

I will carry the river quarter file. But I will not explain why the summons was hidden. I was not ordered to open that chamber.

The presiding magistrate remains behind with the citizens, scribes, and sealed evidence chest. Corren, the young adult scribe, the courier, and the guards wait below Judge for his response.

Determine whether The Final Edict strengthens Judge’s authority or exposes a case against him

Judge leaves Courthouse Steps behind and arrives at The Final Edict.

“I manifest my Celestial Wings and lead Corren, the scribe, courier, and guards toward The Final Edict.”

SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled +2)

Summons from the Ruined Court

The Final Edict rises from a field of pale ash, its shattered courthouse towers pierced by evening light. Judge’s Celestial Wings unfurl white-gold above the road, guiding the company through its broken gates.

Corren Vale follows beneath guard, shackles clinking softly. The young adult scribe protects the river quarter file beneath his cloak, while the dust-covered courier keeps the blackened summons close.

Corren Vale

Corren Vale

I know this ruin. The old court stored sealed judgments below the western hall.

Inside, dust lies undisturbed across collapsed benches and cracked mosaics. Judge’s wings cast long radiance over a faded inscription: NO VERDICT WITHOUT THE SEALED RECORD.

Judge

Judge

The inscription predates the summons, but its stone bears fresh handling marks.

The Young Adult Scribe

The Young Adult Scribe

There, beneath the dais. Someone has cleared a path through the dust recently.

The cleared path ends at a bronze door set beneath the judge’s platform. The old magistrate’s device glows on its lock, and the door opens beneath Judge’s arrival, revealing a stair descending into lamplit darkness.

Judge kneels beside the cleared path and studies the dust. Fresh heel marks overlap older scuffs, while a thin smear of bronze dust marks the door’s threshold.

Judge

Judge

The passage was cleared from the hall inward, and the door was opened recently.

His gloved fingers trace the impressions without disturbing them. He finds wax flakes, a torn violet thread, and the sharp crescent of a signet pressed into settled dust.

The Young Adult Scribe

The Young Adult Scribe

That thread matches the magistrate’s robes. Someone from the bench came here before us.

A loose stone shifts beneath Judge’s knee and clatters down the stairwell. The echo rolls through the ruin, announcing their presence below.

Corren Vale

Corren Vale

Then whoever entered knows we have arrived. If the sealed judgments are here, they may already be moving them.

The marks establish a recent descent by a robed official carrying the court’s signet. Dust still clings to the freshest heel, and the lamplit darkness waits below.

Summons from the Ruined Court

A bell tolls beneath the stair, though no tower remains above it. Lamplight shudders along the walls, and every sealed judgment in the darkness answers with a brief red glow.

The Young Adult Scribe

The Young Adult Scribe

That bell is not part of the courthouse records. The vault is waking.

The bronze door swings wider by itself. A rush of cold air carries ash, old incense, and the dry whisper of turning pages from below.

Corren Vale

Corren Vale

If the judgments are being moved, they will use the eastern archive passage. It joins the river quarter road beneath the city.

A red seal flares on the nearest wall, projecting a line of celestial script across the stair: WITNESS PRESENT. RECORD UNSEALED. The words fade, leaving one door ajar below.

The Dust-Covered Courier

The Dust-Covered Courier

The summons named Judge, not the court. Whatever waits below may recognize only his authority.

From the darkness comes a woman’s muffled command, followed by the scrape of a heavy chest dragged across stone. Then a second voice cries that the western passage has collapsed.

“"Wait here." I descend toward the unsealed judgment.”

Wait here. I will examine the unsealed judgment.

The command settles over the stair. Corren stops beneath the red script, while the scribe, courier, and guards remain above as Judge descends through the cold lamplight.

Corren Vale

Then carry the truth back with you, Judge. Do not let them seal it again.

At the stair’s foot, an unsealed judgment lies open upon a stone lectern, its parchment glowing faintly beneath a broken court seal. Beside it stands an elderly woman in dark violet robes, thin and rigid, her silver hair braided around a crescent scar.

The Elderly Woman

The Elderly Woman

You came alone, as the summons required. Good. The record recognizes your former office.

Behind her, a heavy chest rests open, packed with sealed judgments. The eastern passage remains clear, while scattered pages bear fresh red marks matching the signet impression above.

The Elderly Woman

The Elderly Woman

Read the judgment. It names the hand that altered the river warrant, and the authority that ordered the record buried.

“I carefully observe the area, before returning my attention to the Elderly Woman. "Two voices were heard upon my descent. Where did the second voice originate from?"”

Judge surveys the vault before facing the elderly woman again. Fresh red marks cross the open chest, while dust lies disturbed toward both passages and beneath the lectern.

His careful inspection shifts a brittle stack of judgments. Three sealed pages slide to the floor, their seals flaring crimson before the light subsides.

Judge

Judge

Two voices were heard upon my descent. Where did the second voice originate from?

The Elderly Woman

The Elderly Woman

The second voice came from the western passage. It belongs to the archivist who tried to stop me from removing these judgments.

She indicates the passage with two rigid fingers. Its entrance is choked by fallen stone, but the scattered pages show that someone reached it recently from within.

The Elderly Woman

The Elderly Woman

The collapse sealed him beyond the records chamber. He called out when the vault bell awakened, then accused me of burying the truth.

Her gaze drops to the fallen pages, then returns to Judge’s mask. The red seals remain intact, but the vault now bears the sound of shifting stone.

“I recall hearing a muffled voice issuing commands before hearing the second voice issuing commands. After hearing the shifting stone too, I attempt to discern if this is a deceptive ruse.”

SUCCESS (Great Insight, rolled +2)

Judge stills beneath the vault bell and listens past the echoes. The first command carried through open stone; the second returned with a faint metallic doubling, as though shaped by a speaking tube.

Judge

Judge

The voices are not answering one another. The shifting stone was timed to imitate a collapse.

White-gold radiance gathers behind Judge’s mask and passes through the vault. Fine threads of red script appear along the western stones, linking the fallen rubble to a concealed counterweight beneath the lectern.

The Elderly Woman

The Elderly Woman

You mistake a failing passage for a device, magistrate. The archivist’s accusation was clear.

The magic answers her denial with a sharp flare. The stone shifted by command, not collapse, and the second voice was carried from a hollow niche behind the western wall.

The Elderly Woman

The Elderly Woman

He has seen the mechanism. The vault will not protect me from his scrutiny.

The ruse is exposed: the woman staged the shifting stone and used the passage to make the archivist seem trapped. From behind the rubble, the archivist calls again, this time without the false echo.

Judge’s masked gaze turns slowly toward the elderly woman. White-gold light still threads the western stones, illuminating the counterweight beneath the lectern.

The Elderly Woman

The Elderly Woman

I altered the passage to remove the judgments before the court could seize them. The archivist discovered me and tried to sound the alarm.

Her rigid composure fractures. She points toward the open chest, where several red-sealed pages are missing and a narrow channel disappears beneath the lectern.

The Elderly Woman

The Elderly Woman

The river warrant was not an isolated forgery. The order to bury its record came from the presiding magistrate’s office, and these judgments name the intermediaries.

Behind the western rubble, stone scrapes against stone. A gaunt elderly man in a dust-streaked brown archivist’s robe emerges through a narrow breach, clutching a brass key.

The Archivist

The Archivist

She speaks truth now because your light exposed the mechanism. I can show you the transfer ledger, Judge. It records every judgment she removed.

Show me this ledger, and anything that has been tampered with. It is apparent that something is amiss, since this information was kept hidden.

The archivist lowers his brass key into the lectern’s concealed lock. A hidden drawer opens, revealing a narrow ledger wrapped in oil-dark cloth and several scraped parchment slips.

The Archivist

The Archivist

The transfer ledger is here. I kept it from the court because its entries were altered under official seal, then ordered removed from the archive.

He carries the ledger to the stone lectern and opens it beneath Judge’s radiance. Inked names run in orderly columns, interrupted by blank spaces, shaved parchment, and overwritten dates.

The Archivist

The Archivist

These three entries concern the river warrant. The original recipients were erased, but pressure marks preserve the names: the collector’s clerk, a deputy registrar, and the presiding magistrate’s seal-bearer.

The Elderly Woman

The Elderly Woman

I removed those pages to prevent the court from destroying them. I did not alter the warrant, but I carried the ledger beyond its lawful custody.

The archivist turns to a final section marked with black thread. Beneath its lifted flap, fresh ink records a transfer from the presiding magistrate’s office to an unnamed royal tribunal.

This shall be confiscated and used in the trial. Now tell me, what information do we have on this tribunal?

Judge takes the transfer ledger, its altered slips, and the scraped pages into his custody. He folds each fragment beneath the oil-dark cloth and marks their order by seal and pressure trace.

The ledger’s black thread snaps as he secures it, releasing a brief warding spark that scorches his glove and leaves a sharp scent of burned wool in the vault.

The Archivist

The Archivist

The tribunal is royal, but it does not sit in the capital. Its seal belongs to a circuit of appointed judges who travel wherever the crown fears an ordinary court will resist.

The Elderly Woman

The Elderly Woman

Its presiding judge is selected by the Chancellor of Petitions. The tribunal accepts sealed records without public examination, then issues binding orders to every lower court.

Under Judge’s radiance, the final entry reveals a destination beneath the royal seal: the eastern border city of Vauld, with departure authorized before the next bell.

The Archivist

The Archivist

The transfer was arranged for Vauld. If the tribunal receives these records first, it can declare the river warrant lawful before any witness reaches it.
