Judge — History & Events
1. The Making of a Magistrate
Judge was born an Aasimar, possessing a celestial heritage that shaped his sense of duty and justice. He eventually joined a respected judicial order, becoming a magistrate responsible for investigating crimes, examining evidence, and delivering sentences. He believed the law existed to protect the innocent and that no individual, regardless of wealth or status, should stand above it. In his early years, Judge was disciplined but fair, willing to dismiss accusations when evidence was insufficient and to consider mercy when circumstances warranted it.
2. The Massacre of the District
Judge's faith in the legal system was shattered when he investigated a massacre involving a powerful nobleman. Evidence indicated that the noble had diverted food and medicine intended for a starving district. When its inhabitants protested, the noble's soldiers violently suppressed the uprising, leaving numerous civilians dead. Surviving witnesses were threatened, evidence disappeared, and official records were altered to protect the nobleman's reputation.
3. The Acquittal
Despite Judge's investigation, the nobleman was acquitted through political influence and deliberate manipulation of the trial. Witnesses were discredited, incriminating evidence was dismissed, and the court's senior magistrates refused to challenge the verdict. Those who had testified against the noble were subsequently murdered, imprisoned, or forced into hiding. Judge appealed the ruling and demanded an inquiry, but his superiors refused to act. He came to believe that the law had become an instrument of the powerful rather than a shield for the innocent.
4. The First Sentence
Desperate for guidance, Judge sought an answer from the celestial power associated with his heritage. Whether his prayers were ignored or misunderstood remains uncertain. He interpreted the silence as proof that he could no longer depend on others to deliver justice. Judge confronted the acquitted nobleman at his estate. When the noble's guards attacked him, Judge's celestial power erupted, and he killed the guards before executing the noble himself. For the first time, he felt that justice had been delivered without compromise.
5. The Fall of the Magistrate
Judge was arrested, condemned for murder, and stripped of his judicial office. The same institution he had faithfully served declared him a criminal. Some survivors of the massacre regarded him as a hero, while others feared the precedent he had established. Judge rejected both praise and condemnation, believing neither public opinion nor institutional authority could determine whether his actions were just. He concluded that a judge required the power to enforce a verdict without interference from kings, nobles, or corrupt officials.
6. The Birth of Judge
Abandoning his former identity, he reforged a ceremonial courthouse hammer into a formidable warhammer known as The Final Measure. He fashioned an expressionless metal mask to conceal his face, believing that a judge should never allow personal feelings to influence a ruling. He took the name Judge and began travelling between settlements, investigating crimes, interrogating suspects, and delivering punishment to those he considered guilty. His celestial powers remained, but their purpose gradually changed from service to something closer to absolute authority.
7. The Four Faults
As Judge's reputation spread, his principles hardened into personal weaknesses. He became unwilling to reconsider a verdict once rendered, intolerant of those who openly defied his authority, and reluctant to grant clemency to those he believed guilty. Most dangerously, he refused to accept responsibility when his own judgments caused harm. He continued to demand accountability from everyone else while convincing himself that his decisions were necessary exceptions.
8. The Unfinished Case
Judge retains a damaged copy of the proceedings from the trial that destroyed his former life. Several pages are missing, and certain surviving passages contradict his recollection of events. He insists that the records were corrupted by the nobleman's allies, yet he has never permitted anyone else to examine the document closely. He continues to search for surviving witnesses and the officials responsible for manipulating the trial. Beneath his pursuit of justice lies an unspoken need to prove that his first execution was justified.
9. The Present Day
Judge now travels as a masked Aasimar cleric devoted to order and the enforcement of his own judicial code. He believes every accused person deserves an opportunity to answer for their actions, but once he reaches a verdict, he considers further resistance an obstacle to justice. He opposes corruption, protects those unable to defend themselves, and refuses to recognize wealth or political rank as an excuse for wrongdoing. However, he increasingly confuses his own authority with the principles he claims to uphold.
Judge's future remains uncertain. He may eventually recognize that no individual can be trusted with unquestionable authority, or he may build a system in which his verdicts become law and no one is permitted to challenge them. His greatest unresolved case is the one he has never allowed himself to hear: whether Judge himself has become the very injustice he once swore to oppose.
